Quick answer

Ranked unlocks at VALORANT account level 20

Accounts that have never played Competitive must reach VALORANT account level 20 before entering the ranked queue. You earn Account Points by completing matches, and every 5,000 AP increases the account level by one. Reaching level 20 unlocks eligibility, but the account still needs placements, the correct region and secure access.

The unlock rule

VALORANT account level 20 unlocks Competitive eligibility

Riot introduced the level requirement in Patch 4.0 so new players spend time learning core mechanics, maps and Agents before entering the competitive queue. Accounts that have never played ranked must reach account level 20.

Required levelAccount level 20

The minimum unlock for a new account that has not previously entered Competitive.

Still requiredRanked placements

Level 20 opens the queue. It does not automatically assign a visible rank.

Legacy exceptionOlder ranked accounts

Patch 4.0 allowed accounts that had already played Competitive to continue below level 20.

Level 20 is eligibility, not proof of skill. Account level measures playtime progression. Rank is produced by Competitive performance.
Permanent progression

How VALORANT account leveling works

The account level appears as a number and evolving border on the Player Card. Riot designed it to recognize time spent across VALORANT modes, not only Competitive. The border changes every 20 levels.

Account Point system5,000 AP per level
Completed matchesPlay to earn AP

Match completion is the basic source of permanent account-level progress.

Duration and resultAP varies by match

Riot bases the amount on how long the match lasts and the result.

First win bonusDaily progress boost

The first win of the day awards additional AP toward the account level.

Because match duration and results vary, there is no official fixed number of matches needed for each level or for the complete journey to level 20.

Do not mix progression systems

Account Points are not Battlepass or Agent XP

AP belongs only to permanent account leveling. Riot explicitly states that Account Points do not contribute to Battlepass progress or Agent Contract XP. A match can move several progression systems, but the values are not interchangeable.

Account PointsPermanent account level

Every 5,000 AP raises the account level and advances the Player Card border.

Battlepass XPSeasonal reward progress

Battlepass experience follows its own missions, matches and seasonal reward track.

Agent progressionUnlock-related systems

Agent access and related progression use separate game systems rather than account AP.

Look at the correct number. A high Battlepass tier does not prove account level 20, and a high account level does not prove every Agent is unlocked.
No fixed match count

How long does account level 20 take?

Riot does not publish one universal match total because AP changes with duration, result and first-win bonuses. Short modes, full matches, wins and daily play do not all produce the same progression pattern.

Avoid anyone promising an exact time without seeing the account, available play schedule and match results. The 5,000 AP requirement is fixed. The speed of earning it is not.

More than one number

What a truly ranked-ready VALORANT account should include

Account level 20 or valid legacy eligibility
Correct Region of Residence and shard
Current placement or visible rank status
Useful Agent access for intended roles
Secure email and login information
Any required Riot Mobile MFA completed

Riot has introduced Riot Mobile MFA requirements for certain shared and high-ranked accounts in supported regions. The exact rollout can change, so account level alone should never be treated as the complete access checklist.

Two different signals

VALORANT account level vs Competitive rank

Account level represents accumulated playtime progression across modes. Competitive rank reflects performance inside ranked matchmaking. A level 200 account can be unranked in the current Act, while a level 20 account can begin placements and reach a strong rank through performance.

Account levelTime and match activity

Permanent progression that continues across Acts and game modes.

Competitive rankRanked performance

A skill result produced by placements, wins, losses and matchmaking performance.

Ranked-readyEligibility plus account fit

Level, region, security, Agent access and rank status considered together.

Avoid a weak listing

What to check before choosing a ranked-ready account

Assuming a high account level means a high Competitive rank.
Confusing AP with Battlepass or Agent XP.
Ignoring Region of Residence because the account is level 20.
Accepting ranked-ready without placement or rank details.
Skipping email, access and MFA checks.
Believing level 20 removes Riot account-transfer risk.

Riot’s Terms prohibit sharing, selling and transferring accounts or Login Credentials. A visible account level and seller warranty cannot override platform enforcement or guarantee permanent access.

FAQ

VALORANT account level and ranked FAQ

What account level do you need for ranked VALORANT?

Accounts that have never played Competitive must reach account level 20 before entering the ranked queue. Riot introduced this requirement in Patch 4.0.

How much AP is needed for one VALORANT account level?

Riot states that an account gains one level for every 5,000 Account Points earned. The Player Card border also changes every 20 account levels.

How do you earn Account Points in VALORANT?

You earn AP by completing matches. The amount is based on match duration and result, and Riot also awards bonus AP for the first win of the day.

Is Account Point AP the same as VALORANT XP?

No. AP increases the permanent account level. Riot says AP does not contribute to Battlepass progress or Agent Contract XP, so the systems should not be treated as interchangeable.

How many matches does it take to reach VALORANT account level 20?

There is no fixed official match count because AP varies with match duration, results and first-win bonuses. Consistent completed matches and daily first wins move the account forward.

Does account level 20 guarantee a VALORANT rank?

No. Level 20 unlocks eligibility for Competitive on a new account. The player still has to complete the current ranked placement process before receiving a visible rank.

Can an account below level 20 still play ranked VALORANT?

Riot’s Patch 4.0 included a legacy exception for accounts that had already played Competitive before the level requirement was introduced. New ranked accounts should be expected to need level 20.

Can I buy a ranked-ready VALORANT account?

Riot’s Terms prohibit sharing, selling and transferring accounts or Login Credentials. A ranked-ready seller label cannot remove platform enforcement or access risk.
