Quick answer

Do not start the round by holding a spawn window for five seconds. Use your prep drone to identify risky exterior lines, pick a spawn with nearby cover and move immediately to the building or the first safe staging point. Check a line only when the drone, round history or teammate call gives it value. For runouts, watch the door/window route, keep a teammate tradeable and take cover when detection or sound confirms the defender.

The first death is usually preventable

Spawn peeks punish open space and repeated habits

Early defender aggression works when attackers give it a known time, route and exposed target. It becomes much weaker when attackers leave spawn decisively, use cover, split responsibility and check only the lines that information makes dangerous.

Good startIntel then movementYou know the riskiest line and move to cover instead of freezing in open spawn.
Good counterTradeable spacingA teammate can see or punish the defender route without sharing the same exposed lane.
Bad habitBlind prefire routineYou reveal your position and delay the attack even when nobody is there.
Preparation phase

Use the drone for your first route, not only the bomb site

Ubisoft describes attackers using prep drones to assess enemy positions, objective location and fortifications. Extend that idea to your first exterior route: identify a likely spawn window, doorway or flank path, then leave the drone where it can validate the risk after action starts.

Find the objectiveKnow which side of the map will matter before choosing a spawn route.
Mark one high-risk exterior lineDo not attempt to memorize every possible peek; identify the route the defense is most likely to use this round.
Keep a drone alivePlace it to watch the relevant window, door or hallway after the phase ends.
Share a useful call“Window open on this side” or “no prep on this route” gives the team a real first action.

Runout counterplay

Watch the exit route and react to information

A runout is strongest when the attacker is looking at the building but not the exterior exit. Expect it after noise, drones, pressure on an exterior wall or repeated attacker positioning. Watch the likely door/window with a purpose, then use detection, sound and teammate spacing to force the defender into a risky route.

Do not chase blindlyWhen a defender runs out, take cover, call the route and hold the return path. The defender may want you to sprint into a second defender or a prepared angle.
Team discipline

Be close enough to trade, far enough to survive one peek

Five attackers moving through the same open lane create a high-value target. Five players spread across the map create isolated deaths. Use pairs or complementary lines: one player moves to cover, one watches the relevant window/exit, then both continue when the route is safe.

Playlist boundary

Quick Match safeguard is not a universal rule

Ubisoft added a 10-second attacker safeguard to Quick Match to reduce spawn peeks there, with protection removed when an attacker enters the building early. Use it as a Quick Match-specific onboarding benefit, not as permission to ignore open spawn in Standard or Ranked.

Fix these first

Six spawn-safety mistakes

01Standing in spawnMove to cover and make the defender work for the angle.
02No drone for exteriorUse prep info to validate the first route.
03Everyone uses the same laneUse trade spacing, not a single exposed stack.
04Prefiring every windowCheck only where information creates a reason.
05Chasing a runoutHold the return route and take cover first.
06Assuming Quick Match rulesKnow the playlist before relying on a safeguard.
Practice

Build a two-route spawn plan per map

In Custom, pick two spawns for a map and mark the first cover, the high-risk window/door and the first entry route. Practice moving to cover while a teammate watches the likely peek. The goal is not to learn a pixel counter; it is to remove hesitation and make the first decision repeatable.

FAQ

R6 spawn peek and runout FAQ

How do I stop dying to spawn peeks?

Drone the risk line, move quickly to cover and make only short information-backed checks.

How do I counter runouts?

Watch likely exterior exits, keep teammate trade spacing and react to detection or sound by taking cover and holding the return route.

Should I prefire every spawn window?

No. Blind prefires waste time and reveal your position. Use information first.

Does Quick Match have spawn protection?

Ubisoft introduced a 10-second attacker safeguard in Quick Match. Do not assume it applies in every playlist.

Should attackers stay grouped at spawn?

Stay tradeable, but do not stack into one exposed lane where a single peek can damage the whole squad.

Are runouts unavoidable?

No. They are timed risks. Drone, watch the exit and use cover instead of treating them as random.

How should I use prep drones?

Find the site, then reserve a drone to validate the exterior line and first route you will actually use.

How do I practice safely?

Use Custom to rehearse two routes per map: spawn, first cover, risk line, teammate trade and first entry.

Prep intel and playlist context

Ubisoft frames prep drones as an attacker scouting tool and documents the Quick Match-specific 10-second attacker safeguard. This guide applies those mechanics to repeatable counterplay rather than publishing fragile spawn-kill locations.
