Quick answer

A good wallbang is not a gamble at every wall. Use it when you have recent information, a believable target position, a surface you have personally tested and a weapon that can retain useful damage. Fire a short, purposeful burst, then move or re-peek with intent. If you have no information, preserve ammunition and your position for the next real fight.

The mechanic

Wall penetration is a damage decision, not a highlight clip

In VALORANT, some bullets can travel through some surfaces and still hurt an opponent. That does not mean every visible wall is shootable, every weapon is equally useful, or a known line is automatically good in your round. The value comes from converting information into damage while exposing yourself less than the player you are pressuring.

The outcome is shaped by four things: the current weapon’s penetration behavior, the specific surface and geometry, the distance and remaining damage, and where the enemy realistically is. A thin-looking divider can still be a poor choice; a reliable surface can still be wrong when the enemy has already rotated.

Good reasonFresh informationA recon, sound cue, teammate call or visible tag places an enemy in a small, current area.
Good reasonRound objectiveYou delay a plant, deny a defuse, punish a repeat hold or buy time for your team to arrive.
Bad reasonHabitual blind spamYou have no timing, no target and no plan for the enemy who swings after hearing your shots.
Useful distinctionA wallbang is not a substitute for clearing an angle. It is a way to make a known or strongly suspected position uncomfortable, convert utility information, or force a defender to move before you take the visible duel.
Before you shoot

Use the four-question wallbang check

Take one second before committing. This small check prevents most low-value spam and makes the good wallbangs repeatable.

What information do I have?Use a recent sound, scan, teammate call, timing, tracer or visible tag. “Someone is often there” is weaker than a call made two seconds ago.
Where can the target actually stand?Reduce the target to a small area. Do not spray an entire box or corridor; choose the line their current position makes likely.
Can this weapon and surface create useful damage?Check the current Arsenal data and test the claimed surface in a Custom game. Do not assume a gun or an old video proves it.
What happens after I reveal myself?Plan the short burst, reload timing, reposition or visible swing. Your bullets and location are information for the other team too.
Best-case result is not only a killForcing a defender to leave cover, interrupt a defuse, make noise, use utility early or surrender a strong hold can be a winning result. Do not keep spraying just because the first bullets did not get a kill.
Weapon choice

Pick for the round first, penetration second

Riot’s live Arsenal is the source to check when weapon data matters. Do that before publishing a specific spot or relying on an old chart. The important practical choice is the job you need the weapon to do after the wallbang: hold, take a normal rifle duel, suppress a choke or play a light-buy round.

Weapon roleWhere it makes senseWallbang discipline
Heavy weaponsSustained suppression, a prepared hold, a known choke or an information-heavy setup.Strong for repeated pressure, but do not turn every round into a stationary spam routine that opponents can prefire or avoid.
RiflesThe default option when you still need to win a visible duel after the pressure.Use short bursts on a verified line with good information. Protect enough ammunition for the actual fight.
Precision purchasesA narrow, high-confidence line when deliberate shots make more sense than volume.Do not force a penetration attempt if a missed shot leaves you unable to trade or hold the open angle.
Light-buy weaponsA surprise punish, close timing or a round where damage and information already create value.Check the current stat card rather than assuming a cheap weapon behaves like a rifle through a surface.

The full purchase decision belongs in the VALORANT weapon tier list. This guide’s rule is simpler: never downgrade a sensible buy solely to chase a wallbang. A penetration attempt is one tool inside a complete round, not the round’s entire plan.

What changes the result

Surface, angle and distance decide whether a wallbang is real

Players often describe a location as “wallbangable,” but that hides the useful details. The exact segment, what sits behind it, how obliquely the bullet enters, how far the enemy is from the surface and the weapon in your hands can change the payoff. Treat a spot as a tested interaction, not as a map-wide property.

Surface and geometryTest the exact panelTwo nearby surfaces can be built differently. A claim about “this wall” may fail one step to the left.
Line of travelKeep the test honestTest from the real angle and range you would use in a match, not from a convenient practice position.
Target positionKnow the likely depthA player tight to cover and a player several steps behind it are different penetration problems.
  • Use a short burst when the information is precise; reset instead of emptying the magazine into uncertainty.
  • Listen after the burst. Footsteps, a reposition, a reload or a utility response can be more valuable than another spray.
  • Do not confuse bullet tracers, impact effects or breakable props with proof that the remaining damage is meaningful.
  • Retest after a map, material or weapon update. A good guide labels its patch context instead of pretending a line is permanent.
Round application

How attackers and defenders should use the mechanic

SituationHigh-value useWhat to avoid
Attacking a defended siteConvert a scan, sound cue or teammate’s contact into a brief pressure burst before the visible swing.Spraying a common anchor with no utility, no timing and no teammate ready to trade.
Post-plantPressure a known defuse location or force the defender to move while a teammate holds the exit.Spending the entire magazine when the spike timer requires a visible peek or a coordinated swing.
Defending a chokePunish repeated, information-backed pathing and make an attacker delay their hit.Telegraphing the same pre-round line every round. Good opponents adapt quickly.
RetakeUse a teammate’s contact to deny a planter or clear a narrow, confirmed pocket before entry.Firing through cover while isolated, leaving a live defender free to swing your exposed side.
Eco or light buyTake an efficient surprise attempt when damage, timing or a dropped rifle can change the round.Forcing a low-odds spam that leaves no ammo for the close-range fight your purchase needs.
Team ruleSay what you know, not only “spam it.” A call such as “one tagged, close behind this panel, I will burst then swing” gives teammates a trade plan. Communication turns a mechanics trick into a team play.
Build your own reference

The five-minute Custom-game validation routine

Do not trust a clip merely because it looks recent. Make a small, personal list of lines you can repeat under the current patch. Riot’s Custom game tools are enough for the discovery part; a teammate can help confirm the target location and the practical damage result.

Open a Custom game on the exact current mapUse the same side, approximate round position and angle that the claimed line requires.
Use the weapon you would actually buyTest the normal rifle, heavy or light-buy option separately. Do not generalize one result to every purchase.
Mark a realistic target depthHave a teammate stand where a defender or attacker truly holds, rather than directly against the wall just to prove a hit exists.
Repeat from the real shooting positionVerify the surface and crosshair reference several times. If it works only with pixel-perfect luck, it is not a ranked-ready rule.
Write the condition, not a mythSave: map, side, weapon, exact surface, target area, patch and reason to use it. Recheck after a map patch.
Never use an early-round kill clip as automatic adviceRiot has specifically changed penetration-related positions to reduce low-exposure round influence. If a spot’s only purpose is a no-information opening kill, it is especially likely to be unhealthy, patched or strategically weak once opponents know it.
Current patch context

Why old Haven and Corrode wallbang advice can be wrong

Patch knowledge matters here more than in many aim guides. In Patch Notes 12.00, Riot said that Haven and Corrode received targeted wall-penetration updates. Haven Mid Window gained a breakable element to prevent early round-start kills through penetration. Riot also adjusted wall materials on key Corrode surfaces because certain positions were too effective for denying space through penetration alone.

That is the model for sensible advice: keep the method, re-check the surface. Do not memorize a montage as a permanent map fact. For your current layouts, rotations and callouts, use the dedicated Haven guide alongside current in-game testing.

KeepInformation-based decisionsScans, sound cues, teammate calls and short bursts stay useful even when materials change.
KeepPersonal testing notesA compact patch-labeled reference survives better than a huge list of unnamed “spots.”
ReplaceOld, absolute claims“Always spam here” and “this wall is free” are not trustworthy after map updates.
Ranked discipline

Six wallbang mistakes that cost more than they win

Mistake 01Spraying without informationIt spends ammo, advertises your position and gives an opponent an easy timing to swing.
Mistake 02Using the same prefire every roundAdapted opponents simply wait, reposition or punish the end of your magazine.
Mistake 03Forgetting the visible duelKeep enough bullets and focus to win the fight that follows the pressure.
Mistake 04Calling an untested clip a setupMap material, weapon, target depth and patch context can all invalidate it.
Mistake 05Standing still after revealing yourselfReposition, change height or let a teammate take the next contact.
Mistake 06Ignoring the objectiveA wallbang that delays a defuse or buys two seconds can matter more than chasing a low-odds kill.

FAQ

VALORANT wall penetration FAQ

What is wall penetration in VALORANT?

It is the ability for a bullet to pass through some map surfaces and still damage a player. Surface, weapon, distance and target position all matter.

Should I spam every common angle?

No. Use a wallbang with timely information, a plausible target position and a follow-up plan. Blind spam reveals your location and can leave you empty for the real duel.

Which weapons are good for wall penetration?

Check the current penetration statistic in Riot’s Arsenal. Heavies can support sustained pressure, while rifles are often the practical choice when you must also win a visible fight.

Can every wall be shot through?

No. A visible wall is not automatically penetrable. Geometry, material, thickness and the weapon determine whether the shot keeps useful damage.

Do wallbang spots change after patches?

Yes. Riot adjusted penetration-related positions and materials on Haven and Corrode in Patch 12.00. Re-test a line after map updates.

Are wallbangs better on attack or defense?

They are strongest whenever fresh information creates a narrow target area. Attackers can pressure anchors and post-plants; defenders can punish confirmed pathing and delay a hit.

Do skins change wallbang damage?

No. Weapon skins are cosmetic and do not improve penetration or damage.

How do I learn a new spot safely?

Test it in a Custom game from the real angle, with the weapon you would buy and a realistic target position. Write down the map, weapon and patch context.
