Fortnite Save the World Is Free-to-Play
Open the full PvE experience without an access purchase, choose a supported platform and understand exactly why Free players and Founders do not earn the same currency.
Save the World has been free since April 16, 2026. Launch Fortnite, select Play and open its tile under Other Experiences by Epic.
No purchase is required for the full Save the World experience. Epic lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2; the original Switch, smartphones and tablets are excluded. Free players earn X-Ray Tickets, while eligible Founders can still earn V-Bucks.
The access paywall is gone; the Founder distinction is not.
Epic moved Save the World to free-to-play on April 16, 2026. A new player no longer needs an access pack to enter the PvE campaign, and Epic says every player can use the full Save the World experience. The major remaining difference is the reward currency attached to legacy Founder status.
Download Fortnite on a supported platform and open the Save the World tile. Epic states that no access purchase is required.
Free players are not placed into a trial campaign. Epic describes access as the full Save the World experience.
Existing Founders retain eligible V-Bucks activities. A new free player uses X-Ray Tickets instead.
Open the mode from Fortnite's own experience menu.
Save the World is an Epic-made Fortnite experience, not a Discover island code. Follow the live Play menu instead of searching for a purchase page or entering a creator code.
Install the current Fortnite client on a supported platform and let its required update finish.
Sign in to the Epic account you intend to use, then reach Fortnite's main Play screen.
Open the Other Experiences by Epic section rather than the island-code entry field.
Choose the Save the World tile. On PC, install its optional files if Fortnite prompts you.
Nintendo Switch 2 is supported; the original Switch and mobile devices are not.
Platform names matter because Battle Royale support does not automatically mean Save the World support. Epic's access article lists four platform families, while the launch announcement additionally names Cloud.
Save the World is available through Fortnite on a supported Windows PC. Check installation options if its component files are missing.
Epic lists PlayStation support. Launch the updated Fortnite client and choose the Save the World tile from Play.
Xbox is included in Epic's supported platform list. Use the intended Epic login before beginning campaign progress.
Switch 2 is supported. Do not apply that statement to the original Nintendo Switch, which Epic explicitly excludes.
Save the World is not available on the original Switch or Switch Lite even though other Fortnite experiences run there.
Epic's current access article excludes smartphones and tablets from Save the World platform availability.
Free players receive the campaign; Founders retain a legacy reward benefit.
Founder status came from eligible versions purchased before Save the World left early access. Epic says Founder’s Packs were discontinued on June 29, 2020. Making the mode free in 2026 did not convert new players into Founders or reopen those packs.
Full PvE access
- Plays the complete Save the World experience
- Earns X-Ray Tickets through Save the World
- Uses tickets for llamas and eligible shop items
- Does not earn V-Bucks from Save the World gameplay
Legacy V-Bucks eligibility
- Keeps access to the same full PvE experience
- Can earn V-Bucks from eligible Daily Quests
- Can earn through Mission Alerts and Storm Shield Defense
- Retains permanent Founder status according to Epic support
“Save the World is free” does not mean “Save the World gives every player free V-Bucks.”
This is the central 2026 distinction. Epic separates access from reward eligibility: both groups can play the mode, but only Founders can earn V-Bucks from the specified Save the World activities.
Epic identifies X-Ray Tickets as the Save the World currency used for llamas and items in the mode's in-game shop.
Eligible sources include Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense missions and existing Challenges.
Entering the mode after April 16, 2026 does not create a Founder’s entitlement or unlock Founder V-Bucks activities.
Epic says the packs stopped being available when Save the World left early access on June 29, 2020.
A missing tile and a missing PC component are different problems.
Start with platform eligibility, then check Fortnite's menu and installed components. Reinstalling everything before checking those basics wastes time and can leave the same optional component unchecked.
Original Switch, smartphones and tablets do not support the mode. A missing tile there is a platform limitation, not an account purchase issue.
From Play, find Other Experiences by Epic and select the Save the World tile. It is not entered as a Creative island code.
In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, use Fortnite's three-dot menu, choose Options, check Fortnite Save the World and Apply.
If entitlements or Founder rewards look wrong, identify the account signed into Fortnite before changing links or repeating downloads.
This page gets the player into Save the World; the gameplay guide starts after that.
Keeping access and progression separate protects both search intents. This article owns free-to-play status, platforms, currencies, Founder eligibility and the missing component. A future beginner article should own Heroes, Survivors, Power Level, mission flow, schematics and early progression.
