Choose the right match server in-game, read the ping values correctly and keep server selection separate from your account country.
Use Auto first. If ping still feels wrong, compare the displayed ms values and apply one alternative at a time.
Open the upper-right Player Icon, select Settings, open the Game tab and find Matchmaking Region under Language and Region. Auto selects the best ping according to Epic. A lower ms number means a faster connection; click Apply after you select a manual region.

If Auto is not behaving well, use a small comparison instead of permanent server hopping.
Epic specifically allows trying alternative servers when latency issues continue. Keep the test disciplined: compare the in-game values, select one alternative, apply it and then decide whether it is actually better for the match type you play.
Before changing anything, note the ping shown when Auto is active. That is your reference, not just a guess about the best region.
Choose an alternative that Fortnite displays with a credible value, then click Apply. Avoid jumping across every region in the same test.
Use the same kind of play situation where the latency bothered you. A menu reading alone does not describe every in-match condition.
If the alternative does not improve the experience or its displayed value is worse, move back to Auto instead of leaving a weaker manual choice set.
Use the server picker once, then isolate the connection problem.
A high ping number can be a wrong-server selection, but not every delay is caused by that choice. First rule out the in-game setting cleanly. If the lowest displayed region is already selected, stop cycling the same list and investigate the connection around the game.
Set Auto and Apply. This restores Epic's recommended best-ping selection before manual troubleshooting begins.
Look at the displayed values rather than the region names. Choose the lower value only if you are intentionally testing a manual server.
Confirm the change, then test in Fortnite. An unapplied selection cannot affect matchmaking.

Match server, account country and Career flag are three different things.
