Quick answer

Use Gridlock to make the retake expensive.

The strongest general setup is F90 + Super Shorty + Smoke Grenades. Open the route first, preserve Trax during the early clear, then spend one canister on flank pressure and the others around the plant or retake. Since Y11S2, each spike has 35 HP, stepping on one causes a 10-second limp, and Gridlock carries three canisters. Treat the sound and clearing time as the real reward; Trax damage alone should never be the plan.

Current verdict

Gridlock is strongest when the round has a destination

Gridlock is an Attacker built for support and map control. She does not replace the hard breacher, the first-entry player or the information Operator. Her value begins after those roles create a route: she makes the space behind the push harder to reclaim and gives the plant a more stable ending.

Pick Gridlock when the plan includes a defendable plant position, an exposed flank, a staircase that Defenders must climb or a late-round route that can be compressed into one decision. Avoid treating her like a passive insurance policy. If the team never reaches the site, three untouched canisters at the end of the round are zero value.

Best jobClose routes after progress

Trax should protect space the team has actually earned, not decorate rooms nobody controls.

Best timingMid-round into execute

Keep enough utility alive for the plant and the first wave of the retake.

Biggest weaknessSlow, exposed rotations

Gridlock is durable but not fast. Position early so the execute does not outrun her.

Current opportunity: Ubisoft listed Gridlock in the weekly Trial Operator rotation on July 16, 2026. The selection rotates, but the free week is a useful time to test this loadout in Ranked, Unranked or Siege Cup before unlocking her permanently.
Weapons and secondary gadget

Best Gridlock loadout for Ranked in 2026

Ubisoft’s current profile lists the F90 and M249 SAW as primaries, the Super Shorty and SDP 9mm as secondaries, and Smoke, Frag or Impact EMP Grenades as the secondary-gadget choices. The best build depends on what the lineup still needs, but one setup covers the widest number of normal Ranked rounds.

Use the optic and barrel that keep your first burst stable at the ranges you actually play. Attachment names and availability can change across live updates, so the permanent rule is more useful than a frozen screenshot: control the F90 for flexible fights, or commit to the M249 SAW only when the round plan uses its magazine.

Why the Super Shorty is the best default secondary

The Super Shorty gives Gridlock a second layer of team value. It can open a soft hatch, create a sightline into a Trax-covered route or adjust the floor around a plant position without spending primary ammunition. The SDP 9mm is reasonable when a player wants a conventional backup weapon, especially behind the M249 SAW, but most coordinated rounds gain more from compact soft destruction.

Smoke, Impact EMP or Frag Grenades?

Smoke Grenades are the default because they connect directly to Gridlock’s plant identity. Impact EMP Grenades are the correct swap when electronic denial is blocking the route and the lineup lacks enough clearing utility. Frag Grenades fit teams that already own smoke cover and want to dislodge a Defender before Trax closes the escape. Choose the missing function, not the gadget with the best highlight potential.

Operation System Override

Y11S2 made every Trax field harder to clear

The current Gridlock does not play like the old four-canister version. Operation System Override reduced the total supply but strengthened individual spikes and accelerated the deployment sequence. That trade creates a clearer identity: fewer throws, more deliberate route control.

Gridlock Y11S2 balance cardOfficial values
Canisters3

Reduced from four, so careless early throws are more expensive.

Spike health35 HP

Raised from 1 HP, forcing a more deliberate clear.

Limp effect10 sec

Stepping on Trax now creates a lasting movement penalty.

First deploy0.40 sec

The first deployment delay was reduced from 0.45 seconds.

Ubisoft also reduced the normal deploy time to 0.45 seconds and the canister throw time to 0.40 seconds. Faster spread does not make a blind throw safe; it simply shortens the Defender’s clean reaction window.

The 35 HP value matters because clearing is no longer a free single-bullet reflex across an entire field. A Defender must spend attention and ammunition, expose the clear animation to an angle, use explosive or thermal damage, or accept the slow and sound. Gridlock’s job is to position the field so every counter costs something the Attackers can punish.

Trax Stinger fundamentals

Cover a decision line, not the largest possible floor

A Trax canister lands, activates and spreads a hexagonal field of spikes across the available floor. Ubisoft describes the gadget as an obstacle that reshapes an area, slows and damages Defenders, and can be destroyed by gunfire, impact damage or thermal damage. The tactical value comes from connecting those mechanics to a held angle.

SoundClearing reveals intent

Shots, explosives or the act of crossing tell the team that a Defender is using the protected route.

TimeEvery spike delays the retake

Thirty-five HP per spike turns a rushed clear into a real task during the final seconds.

MovementLimp punishes the crossing

A Defender who steps on Trax carries the movement consequence beyond the first contact.

Do not measure a placement by how many square meters turn green. Measure it by the number of viable Defender decisions it removes. A narrow stair landing watched by one Attacker is often stronger than a huge open field that can be cleared safely from cover.

Simple test: after throwing, ask where the Defender must stand to clear it and which teammate can punish that position. If nobody owns the answer, the Trax is only visual clutter.
Three-canister economy

Give each Trax canister one job before the execute

Gridlock’s utility should follow the round instead of being spent on a fixed timer. The exact order changes by map, but a three-job system keeps the canisters useful even when the first attack route fails.

01Secure the route behind the push

After the team owns meaningful space, place one field on the most dangerous flank or staircase. Do not throw it during spawn just because the route might matter later.

02Protect the plant transition

Use the second canister to separate the planter from the nearest rotation, doorway or swing. Pair it with smoke or a held gun, never by itself.

03Shape the first retake decision

Save the final field for the route Defenders reveal after the plant. A late adaptive throw is usually harder to pre-clear than three early fields.

Sometimes the round needs two canisters before the plant and one afterward. Sometimes a flank is already covered by Nomad, so all three can focus on the site. The point is not a rigid sequence; it is avoiding three throws with the same job. Utility overlap feels safe but often leaves another route completely free.

Need the broader objective framework? Keep this page focused on Gridlock and use the R6 post-plant guide for crossfires, clock management and defuser positioning across every Attacker.
Reusable setup patterns

Six Trax placements that work across the Ranked pool

Memorizing one pixel throw is less valuable than recognizing the geometry that makes Trax effective. These placement types transfer from map to map and stay useful when the Ranked rotation changes.

Stair landing

Make the Defender clear while moving vertically and expose the head or body to a held angle. Place far enough from the top step that the whole field cannot be removed from perfect cover.

Doorway plus side cover

Spread Trax beyond the threshold so a Defender cannot remove every spike without leaning into the doorway. Hold the clearing position instead of watching the middle of the field.

Rotation junction

Use the field where two routes compress into one. The best junction placement turns two theoretical flanks into one readable sound cue.

Drop or hatch landing

Force a Defender to land into damage, sound and reduced movement. Keep a gun on the escape direction; the gadget alone cannot stop a committed drop.

Plant-side cover edge

Place between the nearest safe Defender cover and the planter rather than directly under the defuser. The goal is to deny the clean approach used for the first retake swing.

Late revealed route

Hold one canister until a camera, drone or teammate identifies the retake. A late throw into a confirmed route beats an early guess on the wrong side of the site.

After the plant, avoid building a bright island around the defuser while every doorway remains open. Defenders can clear from range, use explosives or simply challenge from a different line. Place Trax where the retake must move, then hold the clear with a crossfire. For broader route ownership, pair this section with the R6 flank-watch guide.

Team construction

Gridlock becomes stronger when another Operator forces movement

Trax is most effective when Defenders cannot wait forever. Pair Gridlock with utility that creates a deadline, removes safe cover or makes a specific route the only reasonable answer.

Plant escortMontagne or smoke control

A protected planter creates the objective; Trax makes the first retake path slower and louder.

Movement pressureCapitao, Ying, Lion or Dokkaebi

Force the Defender to move or lose information while Trax taxes the available route.

Route ownershipNomad plus Gridlock

Split responsibilities: Airjabs punish committed flanks while Trax controls a plant-side rotation or staircase.

The lineup still needs the basics. Do not select Gridlock, Nomad and several support Operators if nobody can open the reinforced route or win first contact. Her best teams have enough entry and breach power to reach the execute, then use Gridlock to preserve the progress. The R6 operator-combo guide covers full five-player role balance.

Counterplay and corrections

Gridlock loses value when the field can be cleared for free

Defenders do not need a dedicated anti-Gridlock Operator. They need time, a safe angle and the correct damage source. Your answer is not to hide the gadget completely; it is to make the clearing position dangerous and the alternative route worse.

01
Gunfire from cover

A field visible from a safe doorway can be cleared without giving the Attackers a duel. Move the spread deeper or hold the clear angle.

02
Impact and thermal damage

Explosives and fire can remove clusters efficiently. Separate canisters so one response does not erase the entire utility plan.

03
Canister interception

Projectile denial or an exposed throw can stop value before the spread forms. Clear the delivery path and throw from protected space.

04
Route avoidance

A Defender can rotate around a field when the team leaves another lane open. Place at a genuine decision point, not a decorative corner.

Common Gridlock mistakes

Throwing all three before site access

The defense learns every covered lane and can clear without clock pressure. Preserve at least one adaptive canister whenever the round allows it.

Stacking every canister on the defuser

This looks secure but creates one explosive-clear target and leaves the approaches open. Control separate retake decisions.

Expecting Trax to win the gunfight

Damage and limp create an advantage; they do not replace the angle. Be ready to punish the sound cue immediately.

Arriving after the execute

Gridlock’s slower movement demands earlier positioning. Move with the support layer so smoke and Trax are present when the plant begins.

Straight answers

R6 Gridlock FAQ

Is Gridlock good in R6 in 2026?

Yes. Gridlock is a strong support and map-control Attacker when a team needs reliable flank pressure, safer plants and post-plant delay. She is less useful when the lineup already controls every rotation but lacks hard breach, information or entry power.

What is the best Gridlock loadout in 2026?

The safest general Ranked loadout is the F90, Super Shorty and Smoke Grenades. Choose Impact EMP Grenades when the team needs help clearing electronic denial, or Frag Grenades when direct explosive pressure matters more than plant cover.

Is the F90 or M249 SAW better on Gridlock?

The F90 is the better default for most players because it offers faster, cleaner rifle handling for normal entries and retakes. The M249 SAW is valuable when a planned execute benefits from a large magazine, sustained cover fire and fewer reload windows.

How many Trax Stingers does Gridlock have?

Gridlock has three Trax Stinger canisters after the Operation System Override balancing update. She previously had four, so every throw should now protect a meaningful route, plant or post-plant position.

What changed about Gridlock in Y11S2?

Y11S2 reduced Gridlock’s Trax canisters from four to three, raised spike health from 1 to 35 HP, made the deployment sequence faster and added a 10-second limping effect when a Defender steps on a spike.

What do Gridlock’s Trax Stingers do?

Trax Stingers spread spikes across the floor to damage and slow Defenders, create sound when cleared or crossed and make a route more expensive to use. They work best as information and time pressure, not as a guaranteed kill gadget.

What destroys Gridlock’s Trax Stingers?

Defenders can shoot Trax spikes or remove them with impact and thermal damage. A canister can also lose value when it is exposed before spreading, so Gridlock should throw from cover and force Defenders to clear the field while an Attacker holds the route.

Which secondary gadget is best for Gridlock?

Smoke Grenades are the best default for plant-focused rounds. Impact EMP Grenades fit hard-breach support, while Frag Grenades fit lineups that already have smoke cover and need explosive clearing power.

How should Gridlock use Trax Stingers after the plant?

Place Trax on the most likely retake route, stair landing or doorway that a Defender must cross, then hold the clear attempt from a safe angle. Spread the three canisters across separate decisions instead of stacking all of them directly on the defuser.
