VALORANT Split Guide 2026: Callouts, Mid Control and Agent Roles

Split is VALORANT’s vertical mid-control map: tight chokes, rope ascenders, A Heaven, B Tower and fast rotations all decide whether a site hit works. This VALORANT Split guide covers key callouts, map-pool context, mid pressure, attack routes, defense layers, agent roles and retake habits.

Instant answer

To play Split well, fight for mid information, use Ropes to turn site hits into real splits, and never give A Heaven or B Tower for free. Attackers should avoid one-lane rushes, while defenders should delay chokes, protect tower control and retake together.

Identity

Why Split is a vertical control map

Riot’s official map page describes Split as two sites divided by an elevated center, with two rope ascenders and a tower position that matters on each site. That is the map’s identity. Split is not about huge open lanes. It is about compact entry points, vertical pressure and the fight for mid.

A site often depends on Ramps, A Heaven and Screens. B site often depends on Garage, B Heaven and back-site pressure. Mid connects both ideas. If attackers win mid, they can threaten A through Ropes or B through Heaven. If defenders hold mid, site hits become much easier to read.

That makes Split a discipline map. The team that clears corners with utility, trades tight fights and calls tower pressure early usually gets cleaner rounds than the team that walks into one choke and hopes aim solves everything.

Is Split in ranked in 2026?

Split is an official VALORANT map, but ranked availability can move with Riot’s map-pool updates. Patch 8.11 removed Split from Competitive, Deathmatch and Premier at that time, while other modes moved toward a more open map pool. Because later rotations can change status again, always verify the live client before planning ranked practice around Split.

This VALORANT Split guide is still useful even when Split is outside the Competitive pool. Map knowledge matters for Unrated, Swiftplay, custom practice, Premier preparation when pools change, and returning-map updates. Keep the strategy evergreen, but do not claim current queue status without checking the client.

Callouts

Split callouts to learn first

This page is the Split-specific strategy guide. For the broader language system, use the VALORANT map callouts guide. On Split, learn callouts that affect rotations: A Main, A Ramps, A Heaven, Screens, Mid Mail, Ropes, Vents, B Garage and B Heaven.

A useful Split callout should include height. “One B Heaven, one Garage” is much stronger than “B.” The map has too many vertical layers for vague calls. If the enemy owns Tower, your teammates need to know before they swing site.

A sideA Main, Ramps, Heaven

A hits need Ramps or Heaven pressure so defenders cannot stare at one main choke.

MiddleMail, Ropes, Vents

Mid gives attackers routes into both sites and gives defenders early rotation information.

B sideGarage, B Site, B Heaven

B becomes much harder to hold when attackers combine Garage contact with Heaven pressure.

Mid control

Why mid and ropes decide Split rounds

Mid control is the difference between a real Split attack and a one-lane gamble. If attackers pressure Mid Mail and Ropes, defenders must worry about both towers. If defenders keep mid locked, attackers are often forced into predictable A Main or B Garage hits.

Ropes are a timing tool, not a magic rotation. Moving through ropes makes sound and can become obvious if it is not paired with site pressure. Use ropes when it creates a split, baits a rotation or lets a teammate trade the tower fight.

Attack

How to attack Split in ranked

Good Split attack rounds start by avoiding the obvious trap: five players running into one narrow doorway. The map has tight chokes, so you need utility, trades and a second layer of pressure. Mid control is the cleanest second layer because it threatens both sites.

For A, pressure A Main while another player or pair threatens Ramps and Heaven. For B, pressure Garage while mid players fight toward B Heaven. If your team cannot win mid, at least force defenders to spend utility there before the final hit.

Patch 2.01 is old, but the design lesson is still useful: Riot’s Split changes focused on reducing some 50/50 checks, opening chokepoints and improving attacker options. That does not mean Split became easy for attackers. It means you should clear space with structure instead of assuming every corner is impossible.

Default for early infoWatch pushes, bait defender utility and avoid feeding the first tight-angle fight.
Contest midUse smoke, flash, stun or drone value to fight Mail, Ropes or Vents.
Threaten towerA Heaven and B Heaven force defenders to look away from main chokes.
Plant for held spaceDo not plant for a post-plant angle your team already gave up.
Defense

How to defend Split without giving tower control

Split defense is strong when defenders delay chokes and protect vertical positions. You do not need to win every early duel. You need to make attackers spend time and utility before they reach A Heaven, B Heaven or site.

Mid information is the main defensive alarm. If attackers take Mail and Ropes, both sites become vulnerable. If defenders keep one player alive around mid or tower, rotations become cleaner and retakes start with better information.

Layer 1Main delaySlow A Main or B Garage with utility before giving up site space.
Layer 2Mid infoKnow when attackers cross Mail, Ropes or Vents.
Layer 3Tower holdDo not give A Heaven or B Heaven for free.
Layer 4Retake packGroup before re-entry because Split has many tight crossfires.
Simple rule If your team loses tower control, call it instantly. On Split, a lost tower is often more important than the first site contact.
Agents

Best agent roles for Split

Split rewards agents who can clear tight corners, punish stacked defenders and control vertical space. You do not need one exact comp in every ranked lobby, but you do need tools for chokes, towers, mid and flanks. For a wider lineup view, use the best VALORANT team comps by map guide.

DuelistRaze styleClears tight corners, satchels into space and punishes grouped defenders.
ControllerOmen / Viper styleCuts Heaven, Mail, Screens and tower sightlines with flexible timing.
InitiatorSkye / Breach styleFlashes and stuns close fights before entries or retakes.
SentinelCypher / Killjoy styleTracks flanks, stabilizes site layers and slows late tower pressure.
FlexSecond controlAdds extra smoke, flash or molly value for tight retake paths.

In solo queue, pick around what the team lacks. If nobody can clear corners, pick entry or initiator. If nobody can smoke Heaven or Mail, pick controller. If nobody watches flank, pick sentinel. Split punishes greedy comps because every choke needs support.

Post-plant

Split post-plants and retakes

Split post-plants depend on tower and site space. A plant is much weaker if attackers lose A Heaven and Screens immediately. B post-plants collapse when defenders regain B Heaven and force attackers into Garage or back site without trades.

Retakes should start by clearing the highest-value angle, not by tapping spike and praying. Use smokes, flashes and grouped swings to retake Heaven, Screens or B Tower before committing to the defuse.

Attack post-plantHold tower or site space

A needs Heaven, Ramps or Screens value. B needs Heaven, site or Garage control. Do not spread too far to trade.

Defense retakeClear vertical angles first

Retake Tower or Screens with utility, then touch spike. Split punishes rushed solo defuses.

A SitePressure A Main with Ramps or Heaven so defenders cannot hold one choke.Delay A Main, keep Heaven alive and retake through Screens or Ramps.
MidFight Mail, Ropes or Vents to create real site splits.Call mid loss early and stop attackers from walking into both towers.
B SiteCombine Garage pressure with B Heaven or mid pressure for a layered hit.Slow Garage, protect B Tower and retake with grouped utility.
Mistakes

Common Split mistakes that lose ranked rounds

Most Split losses come from ignoring mid, fighting tower alone or walking into narrow chokes without utility. The map is compact, so small mistakes become immediate trades for the other team.

MistakeIgnoring midNo mid pressure makes A and B hits predictable.
MistakeGiving tower for freeA Heaven and B Heaven decide both holds and retakes.
MistakeSolo ropes timingRopes sound without pressure often gives defenders free information.
MistakeNo corner clearSplit has tight spaces that punish dry swings.
MistakeOver-spreading post-plantAttackers need trades, not five isolated hiding spots.
MistakeLate tower calloutsIf tower is lost, teammates need that info before they retake.

Win Split by owning the vertical layer

Split becomes cleaner when your team treats mid, ropes and tower control as the real win condition. Keep comms short, clear corners with utility and retake together before touching spike.

FAQ

VALORANT Split FAQ

What makes Split different in VALORANT?

Split is different because two sites are divided by an elevated mid area with rope ascenders and tower positions. Mid, Ropes, A Heaven and B Tower decide many attack routes and retakes.

What are the most important Split callouts?

The most important Split callouts are A Main, A Ramps, A Heaven, Screens, Mid Bottom, Mid Mail, Ropes, Vents, B Main, B Garage, B Heaven and B Site.

Is Split in ranked in 2026?

Split is an official VALORANT map, but ranked map pools change. Riot’s Patch 8.11 removed Split from Competitive, Deathmatch and Premier at that time, so always check the live client before treating it as active ranked content.

Why is mid control so important on Split?

Mid control on Split opens both sites. Attackers can pressure Ropes, Vents, A Heaven or B Tower, while defenders use mid information to stop splits and rotate safely.

How should attackers play Split?

Attackers should pressure mid, clear close corners with utility, threaten tower control and avoid five-hitting one choke without a split. A or B hits become stronger when mid or ropes pressure is active.

How should defenders play Split?

Defenders should delay main chokes, fight for mid information, protect tower positions and retake together instead of giving A Heaven or B Tower for free.

Which agents are good on Split?

Split rewards agents who clear tight corners, control vertical space and lock flanks. Common role fits include Raze-style entry, Omen or Viper-style control, Skye or Breach-style support and Cypher or Killjoy-style sentinel coverage.
