Five players is a real competitive format. Four players is not.
Riot’s party design tries to balance flexibility with the experience of the players you face. A five-stack can coordinate with friends at different ranks, while a four-stack would leave one solo player in an often difficult social situation. That is why five is a supported full-squad format and four is intentionally unavailable in Competitive.
Five-stacks are supported in Competitive. Riot removed the later rank restriction to give friends more flexibility.

Duos and trios can be excellent, but their rank limits and the current client are still the source of truth.
Best habit: form the party first, then open Competitive together. Let the live queue show any party warning before you promise a long ranked night.

Five-stacks can include players with a much wider skill spread than smaller Ranked parties. Riot offsets that challenge with matchmaking and RR adjustments, especially when the average MMR, the rank gap or high-ranked context makes balanced opponents harder to find. Your exact adjustment belongs to the live client, not an old screenshot.
A large difference inside the party makes it harder to create a fair match. Expect the system to protect the queue rather than treat the group like a standard stack.
Immortal and Radiant contexts have fewer suitable five-stacks. The queue may take much longer and the RR tradeoff can be stronger.
A group with a workable spread, defined roles and clear comms gets more from the five-stack format than a random collection of friends.
Riot has adjusted 5-stack rules across patches. Check the current queue for your exact party before treating any historic percentage as permanent.

Five-stacks can wait longer because Riot looks for the right opponent, not the first opponent.
Riot says five-stacks are matched against another five-stack with similar average MMR. That protects the competitive experience, but it reduces the available opponent pool. The narrower the pool, the more patience your group needs.
Review roles, map preferences and your time window before queueing. A longer wait feels worse when the group has no plan.
High-ranked or wide-spread parties should not promise an instant match. Build the session around that possibility.
Use the wait to review one map plan or run a short warmup, not to tilt before the first lobby appears.
Four-player Competitive parties leave one player outside the real team.
Riot removed four-stacks because one solo teammate can be left facing a closed group with its own calls, mood and social dynamic. Instead of forcing that problem into Competitive, organize as a trio, complete the five-stack or split into another supported party.
- Do not invite a random fifth and ignore them. Give the player real comms, a role and the same respect as the friends you arrived with.
- Do not make a four-stack plan for Competitive. Decide early whether the fifth player is available or whether you play a different mode.
- Do not confuse party size with coordination. A calm trio with clear comms can outperform a full squad with no plan.

Assign comfortable roles
Do not force a new Controller, Initiator, Sentinel or Duelist onto someone just because the comp looks good on paper.

Use short calls and clear reset moments. The goal is to give five voices structure, not to fill every second with noise.
Accept the tradeoff
If the live client shows reduced RR or a longer queue, decide together whether the team session is still worth it. No one should be surprised after the match.

Can you 5-stack in VALORANT Ranked?
Yes. Riot allows five-player Competitive parties and removed the 5-stack rank restriction introduced in Patch 7.06. A 5-stack can still face longer queues and reduced RR when the party has a large rank spread or reaches high-ranked contexts.
Can you 4-stack in VALORANT Competitive?
