VALORANT Post Plant Guide 2026: Hold the Spike Without Throwing
A planted Spike should convert the round, not trigger five separate peeks. Build the hold before the plant, assign clear jobs and make defenders spend the clock before they can touch the objective.
The post plant starts before the Spike goes down.
Plant where the surviving team can see or deny the defuse, assign one Spike watcher, build one crossfire, protect the flank and save at least one delay tool. Attackers win by forcing defenders to clear threats before a safe seven second defuse is possible. Defenders win by removing those layers together.
Make three decisions before the planter commits
A strong post plant is not created by running to a lineup after the Spike is already down. The planter and surviving teammates should know who sees the objective, who protects the back and which ability is reserved for the first real defuse attempt.
Name main, long, heaven, site or another position the team can actually reach after planting.
Put the Spike where those positions can see, wallbang or delay the defuse.
Keep a molly, smoke, recon, flash, stun or trap for the moment defenders commit.
The safest plant is not always the easiest plant to hold
Use the level of site control to decide how exposed the planter can be. A safe corner is correct when defenders are still contesting. When the site is clear, an open plant that connects to main, long or heaven usually creates a stronger objective.
Give every surviving attacker one clear post plant job
The team does not need a professional playbook. It needs different responsibilities. If every player hides, fights or watches the same lane, defenders get a simple route back into the round.
Sees the Spike or listens for the defuse cue and avoids unnecessary fights.
Pairs with another angle so one defender cannot clear both positions for free.
Protects the route that can collapse the hold from behind.
Saves the final ability for a real tap, stick or choke commitment.
Use the 45 second timer as four decision windows
The early seconds are for positions and information. The final seconds are for delay and defuse pressure. Dumping every ability immediately after plant removes the tools that matter when defenders finally reach the objective.
Confirm flank, settle the crossfire and identify which defender routes are still possible.
Make defenders spend utility and time removing the first attacker layer.
Use the first serious denial tool when the retake reaches the Spike.
Stop chasing kills. Deny the remaining defuse window and protect the final angle.
A full defuse takes seven seconds. Progress locks at half after 3.5 seconds, so defenders can secure half, leave the Spike and finish later. Attackers must read whether the tap is a fake, a half attempt or a real stick instead of swinging every sound immediately.
Save abilities for commitment, not noise
Post plant utility is valuable because it buys time, cuts a defender layer or confirms the objective. Damage is useful, but information and delay often win the round before an ability needs to secure a kill.
Use late on a real tap, known stick or forced path. Early damage often misses the only moment that matters.
Best for final delayBlock a retake angle or remove cover from the defuser. Do not blind your own Spike watcher.
Best for isolationConfirm whether defenders are clearing, tapping, sticking or wrapping the hold.
Best for decisionsBreak the first coordinated retake swing or punish the defender forced to touch Spike.
Best for contactHelp take site first. Leave only when the plant and route are secure and teammates know the timing.
Best with a real holdSay what is saved and who watches the objective. Duplicate utility is wasted utility.
Best for coordinationRetake as one wave instead of five separate duels
The planted Spike creates urgency, but panic still helps the attackers. Regroup when time allows, identify the likely hold, use utility before the first committed swing and protect the player who has to stop moving to defuse.
Wait for the trade partner unless the remaining timer makes it impossible.
Find main, long, heaven, flank and common lineup positions.
Smoke long, flash close, reveal the Spike or stun the hold.
Force a peek only when a teammate can punish the swing.
One player interacts while the others hold the known threats.
Make the plan simpler when communication is weaker
Use main, long or another hold random teammates can understand without a full explanation.
Planting open for main. One watch flank. Do not peek. Short calls create usable structure.
Add contact, off-angle, saved utility and a protected lineup without abandoning trades.
Stop turning a planted advantage into an aim duel
The team plants safely, then nobody can see, wallbang or delay the defuse.
Attackers give defenders fights before the retake has to spend time or utility.
Every player watches site while one defender wraps behind the full setup.
One player leaves too early and the remaining site players lose before denial matters.
Defenders clear the site for free, tap the Spike and isolate the last attackers.
The hold reaches the final ten seconds with no smoke, info or delay remaining.
VALORANT post plant questions
What is post plant in VALORANT?
It is the phase after attackers plant the Spike. Attackers protect the objective until detonation while defenders retake and try to defuse.
How long is the Spike timer?
In standard Spike modes, the planted countdown is 45 seconds. A full defuse needs 7 seconds and progress is saved at half after 3.5 seconds.
Where should you plant the Spike?
Plant where surviving teammates can see or deny the defuse from the positions they plan to hold.
What should attackers do after planting?
Assign a Spike watcher, create a crossfire, protect flank, save delay utility and avoid unnecessary early fights.
What utility is best for post plant?
Mollies, smokes, recon, traps, flashes and stuns are strongest when they delay or expose a real defuse attempt.
Should attackers stay on site?
Only when site positions create strong trades. Many holds are better when attackers split between site, main, long, heaven and flank watch.
How should defenders retake?
Group when time allows, clear with utility, take space together, tap with support and protect the defuser.
What is the biggest post plant mistake?
Planting without a hold plan. No Spike visibility, flank watch or saved utility wastes the advantage created by the plant.
