How to Add Friends in Fortnite: Find the Right Epic Name
A Fortnite friend request goes to an Epic display name, not automatically to the console name you see in a lobby. Use the in-game Add Friends flow, then wait for acceptance before expecting the player in your list.

From the Fortnite Lobby, click your Profile icon in the upper-right, select the Add Friends icon, enter your friend’s exact Epic display name, then select Add Friend. Fortnite confirms that the request was sent. The player appears in your friend list once they accept it, whether they are online or offline.
What you need before adding a friend
The important identifier is the other player’s Epic display name. A platform name can be different, especially on console, so confirm the name before sending the request.
Do not share a password, email login or recovery code to add a friend. A friend request requires only the correct public-facing Epic display name.
How to add a friend in Fortnite
Use Fortnite’s own Lobby flow. This is the direct in-game method Epic documents for adding another player.
Open Fortnite
Launch Fortnite and go to the Lobby.
Open your Profile icon
Select your Profile icon, the circle with initials, in the upper-right corner.
Select Add Friends
Choose the Add Friends icon from the social menu.
Enter the Epic display name
Type your friend’s Epic display name carefully. Ask them to copy it from their Epic profile if there is any doubt.
Send the request
Select Add Friend. Fortnite displays a notification confirming the request was sent.
What happens after you send a request
Sending a request is not the same as becoming friends immediately. Epic says that once the request has been accepted, the player appears in your Fortnite friend list whether they are currently online or offline.

Adding friends across platforms
Epic says you can play Fortnite with friends on any platform. If you play on a platform other than PC or Mac and want to play with friends on other platforms, Epic’s friends guidance says to enable cross-play in the relevant settings area.
