Put two players on one console the supported way: separate accounts, two controllers, a Local Players game and a stable connection.
Split screen is Local Multiplayer on PlayStation and Xbox, but not on PC, Switch or mobile.
In the Fortnite lobby, connect a second controller and select the second player's console account. Link that player's separate Epic account, then enter a game marked Local Players. Battle Royale, Zero Build and selected LEGO Fortnite experiences can support it; Ranked, Solos, Creative, Limited Time Modes and Save the World do not.

Local Multiplayer starts from the lobby only after Fortnite recognises a valid second player. Most failed setups are an unsupported device, a guest profile or a second account that never completed its Epic link.

Know what split screen cannot do before you queue.
Local Multiplayer is a match-only couch co-op feature. It does not turn every Fortnite mode or every device into a two-player screen, and it does not merge the two accounts.
Split screen is active while you are in a supported match. The lobby and sub-menus remain individual, and each player keeps their own inventory.
Epic lists Ranked Mode, Solos, Creative, Limited Time Modes, Save the World, PC, Switch and mobile among the exclusions.
Both players have their own items. Local Multiplayer does not let one player hand their inventory to the other through a shared split-screen pool.
Epic says tournament events allow only one player on a given game device, so couch co-op cannot be used for events.
If either player disconnects or leaves the match, the Local Multiplayer session finishes rather than continuing for the remaining player.
Fix the missing second-player setup in this order.
Do not start with a reinstall. The official requirements isolate most failures: controller connection, separate accounts, supported mode, language or network stability.
Reconnect both controllers, sign into a normal second console account and verify that player two has completed the separate Epic account link.
Check the game's Local Players tag, make language settings identical and confirm that neither player is trying an excluded mode.
Check the stability of the internet connection. If either player exits or disconnects, Local Multiplayer ends by design.
Update Fortnite and the console software, restart the console and confirm both controllers and separate Epic accounts are recognised before testing a supported mode again.
Restart the console after checking the two-account and supported-mode requirements. Epic also suggests clearing the Xbox console cache for a persistent issue.
A parental content restriction can block a specific experience. Resolve the content setting from that player's account rather than inside a split-screen match.
Remove player two cleanly from the top-of-screen icon.
To exit split-screen mode, Epic instructs you to hover over the second player's icon at the top of the screen and select the option to kick out or remove that player. You then return to single-player mode.
