Fortnite Party Privacy: Joinable vs Invite Only
A friend request and an open party are different things. Party Joinability controls whether friends and connections can join you freely or must be invited or approved first.
i Rules verified against Epic Games’ party privacy support guide.
Select your Profile icon, open your profile tab, then review Party Joinability. Choose Joinable when friends and connections may join your party, or Invite Only when a player must be invited or have a join request approved. Epic says Party Joinability defaults to Invite Only for players who indicate they are under 18.
What Party Joinability means
Party privacy is a control over party access. It is not a crossplay toggle, a friend-list manager or a voice chat permission setting.
Choose the option based on the session you want. Joinable suits relaxed sessions where you welcome your social circle. Invite Only gives you a deliberate approval point before someone enters the party.
How to change Fortnite Party Joinability
The setting lives in your social profile area. Start from your profile rather than searching through the full account settings list.
Open your profile icon
In Fortnite, select your Profile icon.
Open the profile tab
Select your profile tab to access the party-related controls.
Review Party Joinability
Find the Party Joinability setting before changing any other social option.
Select Joinable or Invite Only
Choose Joinable to let friends and connections join, or Invite Only to require an invitation or approved join request.
Which party privacy mode should you use?
| Situation | Recommended mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open games with your regular social group | Joinable | Friends and connections can join without waiting for an individual invitation. |
| Duo, tournament or focused squad session | Invite Only | You control access through invitations or join-request approval. |
| Someone joins even though you selected Invite Only | Check online status | Epic says they may be using the Join Game function; see the specific fix below. |
| You only want to change chat | Use Communication | Party Joinability controls access, while voice/text permissions are a separate setting area. |
Why friends may still join an Invite Only party
Epic has a specific explanation for this: if Party Joinability is Invite Only but uninvited friends still join, they may be using the Join Game function.
Epic says to set your online status to Away in-game if you want to prevent friends from joining automatically. If you need to stop one particular player from joining your party or Creative maps, Epic says you can remove that player from your Fortnite friend list.
This does not mean Invite Only is broken. It means party access and the broader social presence state can interact. Use the least drastic control that solves the actual problem: Invite Only for approval, Away for automatic-join concerns, and friend-list removal only for the individual-player case Epic describes.
Fortnite Party Privacy troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Friends join unexpectedly | They may be using Join Game despite Invite Only. | Set online status to Away in-game, as Epic advises for automatic-join concerns. |
| Only selected people should join | The party should not be broadly joinable. | Use Invite Only and approve join requests or send direct invitations. |
| Voice chat is too open or closed | Party access and communication settings are separate. | Open Settings → Communication and review the voice/text audience. |
| The setting is unavailable or different | Age indication, parental controls or a changed UI can affect the visible choices. | Review the profile menu and the account’s parental-control status. |
