HARDWARE TIER • NOT AN FPS PROMISE
Quick answer

For Epic's recommended tier, target a GTX 960 or R9 280-class DX11 GPU with 2 GB VRAM, an i5-7300U or Ryzen 3 3300U-class CPU, 16 GB RAM, NVMe SSD and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.

The minimum tier drops to Intel HD 4000 or Radeon Vega 8, Core i3-3225, 8 GB RAM and supported 64-bit Windows 10. That is a launch floor, not a high-settings or FPS guarantee. Epic Quality instead targets RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT, 8 GB VRAM, i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 3700X, 16 GB RAM and NVMe storage.

Official 2026 comparison

Epic publishes three PC targets, not one universal Fortnite build.

The table below follows Epic's current support page. “Equivalent” means comparable capability, not merely a newer product name or a larger model number.

Read the labels

Minimum means the game can run; it does not mean high settings or stable competitive FPS.

Epic explicitly says a machine that only meets the minimum will probably not run Fortnite at its highest settings. Resolution, map load, background software, temperature and individual component behavior still affect the result.

MinimumCompatibility floor

Enough for native PC support when every listed requirement is met. Expect reduced visual settings and evaluate Performance Mode.

RecommendedBalanced target

Epic's general best-experience baseline adds 16 GB RAM, NVMe storage and a dedicated DX11-class GPU with 2 GB VRAM.

Epic QualityHigh-visual target

A separate hardware class for the Epic preset: stronger GPU, 8 GB VRAM and higher CPU tier. It still is not a published FPS guarantee.

No universal “120 FPS PC” in this table: Epic names component tiers, not guaranteed frame rates. A target FPS depends on resolution, rendering mode, quality settings and the complete machine.
Windows inventory

Use System Information to identify the actual CPU, RAM, OS and graphics adapter.

Do not rely on a store label such as “gaming laptop” or the sticker on the case. Epic's own verification guide uses Windows System Information for the comparison.

Open Start

Type System Information and press Enter.

Read OS Name and Version

Confirm Windows edition, version and that the system is 64-bit.

Record the processor

Copy the full CPU model, including its generation and laptop or desktop suffix.

Record installed memory

Check the physical RAM amount. Usable memory can be slightly lower than the installed total.

Expand Components

Select the plus sign beside Components, then choose Display.

Record every GPU

Laptops can list integrated and dedicated graphics. Fortnite should use the capable high-performance adapter when one exists.

Compare all rows: one strong component does not cancel a failed OS, RAM or graphics requirement. The usable tier is limited by the weakest relevant part.
Hardware equivalence

Do not compare CPU and GPU names by one number alone.

An i7 is not automatically faster than every i5, and a mobile chip is not identical to a desktop chip with a similar name. Generation, power limit, core design, memory configuration and thermal behavior all matter.

Keep the full model name

“Core i5” is incomplete. Record the digits and suffix so the exact generation and mobile/desktop class can be evaluated.

Check the active GPU

A laptop may meet the recommendation with its dedicated GPU while Fortnite accidentally launches on integrated graphics.

Capacity is not the whole story

The official threshold is capacity, but integrated graphics can share system memory and background apps reduce what remains available.

Use a conservative equivalent

When the model is not in Epic's examples, compare it with reputable vendor specifications and independent tests instead of guessing from age.

Avoid fake certainty: “newer than GTX 960” does not prove equivalent performance. Low-power laptop parts and entry-level rebadges can behave very differently.
Operating system

Fortnite's minimum PC path is 64-bit Windows 10 on Epic's named supported versions.

Epic currently lists Windows 10 version 22H2 64-bit or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 64-bit at minimum. The recommended and Epic Quality tiers list 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.

64-bit is required

Check System Type in Windows System Information. A 32-bit installation does not meet the listed OS requirement.

Check the Windows version

“Windows 10” alone is not the complete minimum. Compare the version and edition with Epic's current row.

Windows 11 is supported

Epic lists Windows 10/11 64-bit for its recommended and Epic Quality specifications.

Windows 7/8 are not the native route

Epic ended official native support for those systems. An old requirement screenshot should not override the current support page.

Separate requirement: Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and IOMMU rules for certain PC tournament participation belong to the dedicated firmware eligibility guide, not this general hardware table.
Drive and install footprint

Use the Launcher's current Options total instead of trusting a permanent GB number.

Fortnite's installed size changes with updates and optional components. Epic's current system table recommends an NVMe SSD but does not publish one fixed minimum-storage number in that table.

Open Epic Games Launcher Library

Find Fortnite and select the three-dot menu beside the game.

Choose Options

The installation options show how much space available features require on the current build.

Review optional components

High Resolution Textures increase the footprint. Epic says removing them can save more than 15 GB in its current Performance Mode guidance.

Leave update headroom

Do not fill the drive to the exact displayed install size. Updates and temporary patching operations need free working space.

Why Epic recommends NVMe

Both recommended and Epic Quality tiers name an NVMe SSD. Faster storage helps asset access and reduces the limitations of a slow mechanical drive.

Remove only optional features

Use Launcher Options rather than deleting files manually. The Launcher displays the current feature sizes and applies the supported change.

Keyword boundary: if an update is stuck, loops, or downloads slowly, use the separate update/download troubleshooting article. This section only establishes storage suitability.
Match mode to hardware

Choose the rendering tier after the PC passes compatibility, not before.

Performance Mode: Lower Graphical Fidelity trades visual quality for lighter CPU, GPU and memory demand. Epic says it can help low-frame-rate PCs, but the machine must still meet Fortnite's system requirements.

Minimum-class PCStart with Performance

Use lower graphical fidelity and conservative resolution/settings. Treat playability as a measured result, not a guaranteed FPS target.

Recommended-class PCChoose balance

Use the recommended tier as a general experience baseline, then choose quality or Performance according to the real workload.

Epic-class PCTarget Epic Quality

Epic publishes RTX 3070/RX 6700 XT-class graphics and 8 GB VRAM for this preset class, alongside the stronger CPU tier.

Not a settings article: detailed competitive FPS tuning, resolution and gameplay-specific settings should stay on a dedicated performance page. Here, rendering mode is only mapped to hardware intent.
Whole-system check

The weakest required component determines the practical tier.

A strong graphics card cannot replace missing RAM or an unsupported OS. Likewise, 32 GB RAM does not make an integrated GPU equal to an RTX 3070 for Epic Quality.

CPU-limited symptoms

Large combat scenes, background tasks and high frame-rate targets can expose processor limits even when average GPU use looks comfortable.

GPU-limited symptoms

Resolution, effects and visual quality load the graphics processor and VRAM. The Epic preset has a much higher GPU target for this reason.

Memory pressure

Eight gigabytes meets the minimum, but Epic recommends 16 GB or more. Close background applications before judging a borderline PC.

Storage pressure

A nearly full or slow drive can worsen installation and asset behavior. Recommended and Epic Quality tiers both specify NVMe.

Sudden change versus permanent limit: if the same PC used to run Fortnite correctly and now crashes or refuses to launch, use the PC crash and launch guide. Specifications describe capability, not every new fault.
Portable PCs

Laptop model names hide power, cooling and GPU-selection differences.

Two laptops with similarly named components can deliver different sustained results. Check the exact suffix and installed GPU, then test while the machine is in its normal gaming power state.

Connect the manufacturer's power adapter

Battery mode can restrict CPU and GPU power on many laptops.

Confirm the high-performance GPU

Epic recommends checking that Fortnite uses the dedicated adapter on dual-GPU systems.

Keep vents unobstructed

Thermal limits can reduce sustained performance after the first minutes of a match.

Record the full CPU and GPU suffix

Mobile U, H and other variants are not interchangeable with desktop parts.

Check real installed RAM

Do not infer capacity from the product family. Use System Information.

Verify the internal drive type and space

Recommended specifications call for NVMe, and the current installation needs free update headroom.

Upgrade decision

Fix a failed requirement first; optimize only after every minimum row passes.

A disciplined upgrade plan starts with compatibility and then targets the desired tier. Do not buy a GPU before confirming the desktop's power supply, physical space, motherboard compatibility and CPU balance.

Unsupported OS or 32-bit Windows

Resolve the supported 64-bit operating-system requirement before spending on visual-quality upgrades.

Below 8 GB RAM

The PC fails Epic's minimum. Verify motherboard or laptop upgrade support and use matched compatible memory.

Only minimum graphics

Use Performance Mode first. For higher visual quality, a graphics upgrade may matter most, but confirm the complete system can support it.

Mechanical or nearly full drive

An SSD upgrade and free space can improve the overall experience. Epic names NVMe in both higher tiers.

Targeting Epic Quality

Compare GPU, VRAM, CPU, RAM, drive and OS with the entire Epic tier rather than upgrading one headline component.
