SAME MODE • SAME REGION
Quick answer

The host needs creator-program access; everyone needs the same supported Battle Royale mode, region and exact key.

A host with completed creator setup selects an eligible Battle Royale mode, makes sure all players use the same server region, opens Custom Key and creates a 4-16 character key with no special characters. Participants enter that case-sensitive key, press Play and wait for the host to Start Match.

Host eligibility

Creating a Custom Match is not an all-player lobby option.

Epic says hosting Custom Matches is available to active members of its creator or developer programs. Even a program member must complete the account creator setup process before the host flow becomes available.

Host requirementActive creator or developer program

Creating Custom Matches is currently limited to accounts active in one of Epic's creator or developer programs.

Setup requirementCreator setup completed

Membership alone is not enough. Epic says the account creator setup must be completed before a member can host.

Participant roleExact key, region and mode

Players join with the host's Custom Matchmaking Key and must use the same server region and game mode.

Do not promise a private match before checking access. If the host has no Custom Key option after selecting an eligible Battle Royale mode, solve creator-program access first instead of distributing a key that cannot start a session.
Key design

Use one simple, private key that every participant can type exactly.

The key is the shared entry point, so its format matters. Epic's current rules are narrow: it must be 4-16 characters long, cannot use special characters and is case sensitive when players join.

Stay between 4 and 16 characters

Epic reports an error when the key is too long. Use a short, readable string that fits the host's audience.

Do not use special characters

Keep the key to ordinary letters and numbers. Symbols can prevent the private match from being created.

Preserve exact capitalization

Custom Matchmaking Keys are case sensitive for participants. Share the key with its intended upper- and lowercase letters.

Do not expose a live key publicly

Epic specifically recommends hiding the key while streaming to keep unwanted guests from joining the match.

Key hygiene: use a new key for each public event or test. A key is an access tool, not a password for your Epic account, but sharing it too widely can still fill the match with people you did not intend to invite.
Host flow

Set the mode and region before you create the key.

A Custom Match host has three dependencies to align before players are invited: a supported Battle Royale mode, the same server region as participants and a correctly formatted Custom Key. The sequence below follows Epic's published host flow.

Select Battle Royale

In the lobby, select the Battle Royale game mode. Epic says Custom Matches cannot be created in other game modes.

Set the shared server region

Confirm that the host uses the same matchmaking region as the participants. A region mismatch can prevent a match from starting.

Find Custom Key

Scroll down in the game-mode selection screen until the Custom Key button appears at the bottom right, then select it.

Create the key

Enter a 4-16 character key without special characters and keep the capitalization you expect participants to type.

Accept, then Play

Select Accept, press Play and wait while participants enter the same key and queue for the session.

Start Match manually

When the intended players are ready, select Start Match. Epic says the host can start the game manually at any time.

Timing matters: tell participants to be ready before you share the key. Players who try to join after the host has started the match receive an error.
Participant flow

Joining is simple only when every setting matches the host.

Participants do not need to guess where the session is. They must use the host's server region, select the same game mode and enter the exact Custom Matchmaking Key before the host begins the match.

Match the host's server region

Open settings and confirm the same matchmaking region as the host. Epic says a wrong region results in an error and prevents joining.

Choose the agreed game mode

Use Change to open the game-mode menu and select the same supported Battle Royale mode the host selected.

Open Custom Matchmaking Key

Choose Custom Matchmaking Key in the mode flow to open the entry field for the host's key.

Enter the key exactly

Enter the received key with matching capitalization. The key is case sensitive and special characters are not allowed.

Accept and press Play

Select Accept, click Play and wait in the queue. The session begins only when the host starts the match.

Join before the start

Do not wait for the host to launch. Epic says players attempting to join after the match has begun receive an error.

Capacity

A key is not a guaranteed seat once more than 100 players try it.

Epic sets the maximum Custom Match capacity at 100 players. If more than 100 people enter the key at the same time, Fortnite chooses 100 randomly; it is not a first-come, first-served queue.

Match maximum100 players

A Custom Match can contain no more than 100 participants according to Epic's current support guidance.

Over-cap selectionRandom, not time-based

If more than 100 players submit the key at once, Fortnite randomly selects 100. Entry order does not create priority.

Immediate kickCapacity may be full

Epic says that being kicked immediately after joining can mean the host's match has already reached the 100-player maximum.

Host communication: state the intended player count before sharing the key and do not frame the key as a reservation. This reduces confusion when a community event reaches capacity.
Troubleshooting

Solve the matching dependency that failed.

Custom Match errors are usually specific: unsupported mode, missing creator access, incorrect region, an invalid key, a late join or a full 100-player session. Check them in that order instead of rotating settings at random.

Custom key not supported

The match.custom_key_not_supported.401 error means the chosen mode does not support Custom Matchmaking. Select an eligible Battle Royale mode and retry.

Host cannot see Custom Key

Confirm active creator or developer program membership and completed account creator setup. Hosting is not available to every player.

Participant cannot join

Host and participant must use the same server region. Correct the region before re-entering the Custom Matchmaking Key.

Key error

Check length, special characters and capitalization. The key must be 4-16 characters, has no special characters and is case sensitive.

Player joins too late

A player trying to join after the host has started receives an error. Set a ready check before starting instead of launching immediately after sharing the key.

Player is kicked immediately

Check whether the match reached the 100-player maximum. A full session can explain an immediate removal after joining.

Keep the intent clean

A Custom Key creates a private Battle Royale session, not an island or ordinary party.

Custom Matchmaking Key, Discover island codes, party privacy and matchmaking region touch different systems. Keeping those user intents separate avoids the common mistake of entering an island code in a Custom Key field or changing account country for a private-match region issue.
