Release the movement input and fire only after your speed falls below the weapon’s accuracy threshold. Moving shots can still land at close range, but they are less reliable and should not be the default.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Is counter-strafing necessary in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”No. Accuracy is determined by movement speed, not by a required opposite-key command. Releasing the movement key is enough to decelerate into the accurate state. A brief opposite input can still help create a consistent stop-and-reverse rhythm, but mistiming it adds movement instead of removing it.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”What is the movement deadzone in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Riot defines the weapon deadzone as the movement speed at which a player becomes inaccurate. Patch 3.0 set the all-weapon threshold to 27.5 percent of maximum movement speed. You must fall below that threshold for the accurate state.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”How do you jiggle peek in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Use a short sideways input to expose a small part of the model, then immediately reverse behind cover. Jiggle peeks are for information, baiting a shot or testing a reaction; do not automatically fire while your movement speed is still high.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”How do you jump peek in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Approach the edge, jump across the sightline with sideways momentum, curve back toward cover with air movement and use the brief view for information. Treat a jump peek as an information tool because airborne weapon accuracy is poor.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”When should you wide swing in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Wide swing when you intend to commit, have teammate utility or a trade, and want to move beyond a defender’s common close crosshair placement. Avoid it when several angles can see you, the opponent has a strong crossfire or you have no plan for the second enemy.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Should you walk or run when peeking in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Run for a fast committed duel when sound is already irrelevant. Walk when hiding footsteps is more important than entry speed. Walking into a prepared opponent is slower and still carries weapon inaccuracy, so stop before taking a precise shot.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Should you crouch when shooting in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Crouch only after choosing to commit to the fight or sustained spray. It can stabilize relevant weapons and change head height, but it removes lateral movement and makes you easier to trade. Do not bind every first bullet to an automatic crouch.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Why do running shots still hit in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Movement adds a spread cone rather than making every shot impossible. A random bullet can still land, especially at close range where the target fills more of that cone. Riot reduced center bias while moving, so a successful running shot is possible but not a reliable rifle technique.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”What is the best VALORANT movement drill?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Strafe between two marks in the Practice Range, release the key, fire one accurate shot and immediately move again. Use the Shooting Error graph or firing-error crosshair feedback to reject every shot fired before the accurate state, then add short bursts and peek variations.”}} ] VALORANT Movement Guide: Stop, Peek & Win Duels

Turn movement into a repeatable duel sequence: choose the peek, cross the angle, enter the accurate state, fire, and leave before a second opponent receives a free target.

Peek toolkit6 practical types
Quick answer

Accuracy begins when your speed drops below the deadzone.

Move laterally, release the input, fire after entering the accurate state, then move again. Counter-strafing is optional; the game checks movement speed rather than requiring an opposite-key command. Use jiggles and jump peeks for information, short peeks for controlled fights and wide swings only when you intend to commit.

The complete duel

Movement is a four-step accuracy loop

Strong movement is not constant motion. It is the ability to switch cleanly between being difficult to hit and being accurate enough to shoot. Treat every controlled duel as the same four-state loop.

01MoveCross the sightline

Use lateral movement to expose only the lane you intend to fight and avoid drifting forward into extra danger.

02StopEnter the deadzone

Release the movement input early enough for speed to fall below the weapon’s accuracy threshold.

03ShootUse the planned group

Tap, burst or commit based on distance and cover. Do not turn every peek into a full magazine.

04ExitMove before the trade

Return to cover, change the timing or reposition unless the round requires a committed finish.

The common missing step is the exit. Players practice moving into a duel but stay stationary after the first burst. Movement is only complete when the opponent’s trade no longer receives the same target.
Speed controls accuracy

The 27.5% deadzone explains stop-and-shoot timing

Riot defines the weapon deadzone as the movement speed at which the player becomes inaccurate. Patch 3.0 changed the all-weapon threshold to 27.5% of maximum movement speed. You do not need to reach a mathematically perfect zero before every shot, but you must fall below the accuracy boundary.

Movement state versus shot reliabilityConceptual speed meter
Below deadzoneAccurate state

Weapon-specific first-shot and firing error still exist, but movement is no longer adding the major penalty.

WalkingQuiet, not precise

Walking hides footsteps but rifles still gain inaccuracy. Stop before a deliberate medium-range shot.

RunningLarge error cone

Riot significantly increased rifle error while moving. A close lucky hit does not make this a default technique.

Air / ropeInformation first

Use jumps and ropes for traversal or information. Medium- and long-range shots are deliberately unreliable.

Why run-and-gun still appears: movement creates an error cone, not a guaranteed miss. At close range the target fills more of that cone, but Riot reduced the center bias that previously helped moving bullets land.
Myth versus useful technique

Counter-strafing is optional; clean timing is not

Counter-strafing usually means tapping the opposite direction as you end a strafe. In VALORANT, accuracy comes from crossing the speed threshold, not from the game checking whether you pressed a particular opposite key. That creates two valid training methods.

Release stopBest starting method
Move rightHold D
StopRelease D
FireShoot after accuracy returns
BenefitFew inputs and easy error diagnosis
Use this first. If the shot is early, the timing mistake is obvious instead of hidden inside an extra keypress.
Opposite-tap rhythmOptional advanced input
Move rightHold D
ReverseRelease D, briefly tap A
FireShoot inside the accurate transition
RiskHolding A too long starts new movement
Useful for a consistent left-right rhythm and immediate exit, but a mistimed opposite input produces another inaccurate movement state.
Deadzoning is the real skill: fire during the accurate window between one lateral direction and the next. Whether you create that window with a release or a brief opposite tap matters less than repeatable shot accuracy.
Six movement tools

Every VALORANT peek should answer one question

Choose a peek by purpose before touching the angle. Information peeks minimize commitment; duel peeks create an accurate shooting window; wide swings exchange safety for timing disruption.

InformationShoulder peek

Expose the smallest useful part of the model and instantly return. Bait a shot or confirm presence without planning to fire.

Best for: Operator bait and reaction check
InformationJiggle peek

Use a short A/D reversal to cross the edge and return. Keep it compact enough that momentum does not carry you into a duel.

Best for: quick info and timing test
InformationJump peek

Jump across the edge, curve back toward cover and collect the visual. Do not build the technique around an airborne shot.

Best for: safe lane or utility check
Controlled duelShort stop peek

Strafe laterally into one angle, release, take the accurate tap or burst and return before the next lane can trade.

Best for: one prepared fight
CommitmentWide swing

Move beyond common close crosshair placement, stop deeper and commit with utility or a teammate ready to trade.

Best for: isolated defender and trade setup
Sound controlSilent walk peek

Use walking only when concealing the timing is worth the slower exposure. Stop before a precise shot because quiet is not the same as accurate.

Best for: unexpected late timing
Geometry lives in the separate guide: distance from cover, angle advantage, off-angle selection and peeker-advantage diagnosis are covered in the VALORANT Angle Advantage guide. This page owns the movement input used to execute the peek.
Purpose before movement

Choose the smallest peek that completes the job

A wide swing is not a better jiggle, and a jump peek is not a safer duel. Start with the round objective and use only as much exposure as that objective requires.

ObjectiveRecommended peekExecution rule
Confirm presenceJiggle / shoulder

Reverse before the model commits. Information is the win condition; a shot is optional.

Bait an OperatorShoulder / jump

Make the sniper reveal the shot, then use the recovery window for utility or a real swing.

Take one clean duelShort stop peek

Move laterally, stop on the prepared angle, fire the planned group and exit.

Trade a teammateFast swing

Match spacing and timing so the defender cannot reset between targets.

Break close crosshair placementWide swing

Commit only when other sightlines are controlled and the deeper stop will not expose a crossfire.

Preserve a hidden timingWalk peek

Accept the slower entry for silence, then stop before the precision shot.

One angle per peek: if the movement reveals two uncleared lanes at once, the input has already failed before aim becomes relevant.
Keyboard and stick sequence

Execute a clean lateral peek in six steps

The keyboard examples use A and D. On console, use the equivalent left-stick release and reversal while preserving the same move-stop-shoot timing.

Pre-aim the lane

Place the crosshair for the expected target before movement changes the picture.

Use lateral input

Prefer A or D around the edge. Forward movement changes exposure more slowly and makes the stop harder to read.

Release before target contact

Begin deceleration early enough that the accurate state arrives as the crosshair meets the opponent.

Fire the planned group

Use one tap or short burst unless the range and fight demand a committed spray.

Restart movement

Return behind cover or change position as the weapon recovers instead of admiring the first shot.

Change the next timing

Do not repeat the same width and delay. The opponent now owns data from the first peek.

Use built-in feedback: Riot added a Shooting Error performance graph and crosshair error feedback to help diagnose whether a shot was affected by movement or firing error. Reject early shots during practice instead of accepting a lucky hit.
Commitment controls

Walking and crouching solve specific problems

Both inputs are useful, but neither is a universal accuracy shortcut. Walking controls sound; crouching changes commitment and weapon behavior. Use them because the round needs their effect.

WalkHide the timing

Walk when revealing footsteps would destroy the play. Do not confuse silence with full rifle accuracy; stop before firing a deliberate shot.

RunWin the timing

Run when the enemy already knows, utility is landing or a trade must arrive immediately. Release before the accurate shot.

CrouchCommit to the finish

Crouch after deciding to hold the spray or alter head height. You lose lateral escape and become easier for a second opponent to trade.

StandPreserve the exit

Stay standing for taps and bursts when returning to cover or adding another strafe remains the stronger plan.

Audio deserves its own guide: exact footstep, HRTF and sound-setting decisions are separated into the VALORANT audio and footsteps guide.
Practice Range routine

A 10-minute movement routine with pass conditions

This block trains movement timing rather than flick speed. Keep one target and one expected crosshair position so every miss exposes the movement input.

10-minute movement blockFive drills • two minutes each
02mReleaseA/D single tap

Strafe, release, fire once and move again. Reject every shot with movement error.

02mRhythmDeadzone shots

Alternate left and right while firing one bullet only inside each accurate window.

02mCornerShort stop peek

Use a wall edge, reveal one target width, stop, burst and return.

02mInformationJiggle + jump

Alternate compact jiggles and jump peeks without turning either into a duel.

02mChoiceRandom callout

Call info, duel or commit before moving, then execute the matching peek.

Pass condition: 18 of 20 stop shots show no movement error, and every information peek returns to cover without an accidental firing commitment.
Continue with aim afterward: crosshair placement, micro-corrections, flicks and full warm-up structure remain in the dedicated VALORANT aim routine guide.
Fast corrections

Six movement mistakes that make good aim look inconsistent

Firing on the visual stop

The character may look nearly still while speed remains above the accuracy threshold. Use error feedback to calibrate the real timing.

Holding the opposite key

A useful brief reverse becomes a new full strafe, so the intended deadzone shot is fired while moving again.

Using W around every corner

Forward movement exposes the angle differently and makes the lateral stop-and-return rhythm harder to control.

Wide swinging without isolation

Breaking one defender’s crosshair placement is meaningless when a second lane receives the same committed target.

Walking into a known duel

Silence provides no surprise after contact is established; the slower exposure simply gives the holder more time.

Crouching on every first bullet

You remove the option to strafe, repeat the same head height and offer the trade player a stationary target.

Beginner pattern check: if several of these happen together, use the broader VALORANT beginner mistakes guide for economy, utility and teamplay errors outside movement.

VALORANT movement FAQ

Should you stop moving before shooting in VALORANT?

Yes for accurate rifle and precision-weapon shots. Release the movement input and fire only after your speed falls below the weapon’s accuracy threshold. Moving shots can still land at close range, but they are less reliable and should not be the default.

Is counter-strafing necessary in VALORANT?

No. Accuracy is determined by movement speed, not by a required opposite-key command. Releasing the movement key is enough to decelerate into the accurate state. A brief opposite input can still help create a consistent stop-and-reverse rhythm, but mistiming it adds movement instead of removing it.

What is the movement deadzone in VALORANT?

Riot defines the weapon deadzone as the movement speed at which a player becomes inaccurate. Patch 3.0 set the all-weapon threshold to 27.5 percent of maximum movement speed. You must fall below that threshold for the accurate state.

How do you jiggle peek in VALORANT?

Use a short sideways input to expose a small part of the model, then immediately reverse behind cover. Jiggle peeks are for information, baiting a shot or testing a reaction; do not automatically fire while your movement speed is still high.

How do you jump peek in VALORANT?

Approach the edge, jump across the sightline with sideways momentum, curve back toward cover with air movement and use the brief view for information. Treat a jump peek as an information tool because airborne weapon accuracy is poor.

When should you wide swing in VALORANT?

Wide swing when you intend to commit, have teammate utility or a trade, and want to move beyond a defender’s common close crosshair placement. Avoid it when several angles can see you, the opponent has a strong crossfire or you have no plan for the second enemy.

Should you walk or run when peeking in VALORANT?

Run for a fast committed duel when sound is already irrelevant. Walk when hiding footsteps is more important than entry speed. Walking into a prepared opponent is slower and still carries weapon inaccuracy, so stop before taking a precise shot.

Should you crouch when shooting in VALORANT?

Crouch only after choosing to commit to the fight or sustained spray. It can stabilize relevant weapons and change head height, but it removes lateral movement and makes you easier to trade. Do not bind every first bullet to an automatic crouch.

Why do running shots still hit in VALORANT?

Movement adds a spread cone rather than making every shot impossible. A random bullet can still land, especially at close range where the target fills more of that cone. Riot reduced center bias while moving, so a successful running shot is possible but not a reliable rifle technique.

What is the best VALORANT movement drill?

Strafe between two marks in the Practice Range, release the key, fire one accurate shot and immediately move again. Use the Shooting Error graph or firing-error crosshair feedback to reject every shot fired before the accurate state, then add short bursts and peek variations.
