Fortnite Sidekicks: Customize, Equip & Use Them
Sidekicks are reactive Locker companions, not combat pets. Learn where they work, which choices become permanent, how Sidekick Points unlock accessories, and how to avoid a bad appearance lock-in.
A Fortnite Sidekick is a cosmetic companion with no gameplay advantage.
Equip one from Locker → Sidekicks. It follows and reacts to you in supported experiences but cannot deal damage, take damage, reveal enemies, or change your stats. For customizable Sidekicks, physical appearance is chosen once and becomes permanent after LOCK-IN; names and earned accessories can be changed later.
What Fortnite Sidekicks actually do
Fortnite Sidekicks are animated cosmetics that accompany your character in supported experiences. They notice events around them, react with expressions and movement, and respond to Sidekick Emotes. Their purpose is personality and presentation, not combat performance.
Epic explicitly states that Sidekicks provide no gameplay advantage and do not take damage. An opponent cannot eliminate your companion, and owning one does not add health, aim assistance, inventory space, faster movement, enemy tracking, or any hidden stat.
Animations and expressions make the companion feel present while you play.
A Sidekick does not fight, scout, block shots, or influence matchmaking.
The equipped companion is selected from the Sidekicks section of the Locker.
Where Sidekicks can follow you in 2026
Sidekicks are designed for several major Fortnite experiences, but they are not displayed in every mode in the same way. Epic lists Battle Royale, Save the World, LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, and eligible developer-made experiences.
How to equip a Fortnite Sidekick
Equipping is reversible. The important permanent decision comes later when you lock the physical appearance of a customizable Sidekick.
Use the main Fortnite navigation and enter your Locker.
Choose the Sidekicks category on the left side of the Locker.
Select the displayed Sidekick to view every companion owned by the account.
Confirm the selection, then enter a supported experience.
Customize the appearance before you hold Lock-In
Not every Sidekick supports appearance customization. When a Sidekick does, Epic allows the appearance to be customized once after it is obtained. The available controls depend on the companion and may include colors, patterns, eyes, body details, or other physical traits.
After choosing the physical traits, select Next Step, review the preview, and hold Lock-In. That appearance becomes permanent for that copy. Take screenshots or rotate the preview before confirming if the interface allows it; there is no reason to rush a one-time cosmetic choice.
Check body, pattern, eyes, colors, and distinguishing features.
If the button is disabled, your combination may duplicate one already owned.
This is the permanent step for that Sidekick copy.
Choose a name or use Randomize Name, then finish customization.
Sidekick Points unlock companion accessories
Sidekick Points are earned by spending time with the companion. Epic introduced accessories such as hats and hoodies as rewards from this companion progression. These accessories are separate from the permanent physical-trait choice, which means the look can continue to evolve without rewriting the original body customization.
Think of the system in two layers: the locked base appearance defines the companion, while Sidekick Point rewards add changeable presentation on top. Before judging a Locker, check both the owned Sidekick and the accessories already unlocked for it.
The physical combination chosen during initial setup stays with that copy.
Time spent together contributes to companion progression and rewards.
Unlocked hats, hoodies, and similar items can update the presentation.
Duplicate Sidekicks are allowed; duplicate appearances are not
Epic allows the same Sidekick to be purchased more than once, but each copy in the Locker must use a unique appearance. If two copies would look identical, the setup cannot be completed. This is why the Next Step button can remain grey even when every visible field appears selected.
To continue, change at least one appearance option or use Randomize until the combination is unique. The rule applies to appearance, not the Sidekick species itself.
How to rename a Sidekick
Open Locker, select the Sidekick, choose the three-dot menu, select Rename, enter a name or use Randomize Name, and save. Epic notes that Sidekicks described as non-customizable may also block name changes. Cabined Accounts receive a curated selection of names instead of unrestricted text entry.
A Sidekick is not the same as a Back Bling
A Back Bling attaches directly to an Outfit. A Sidekick is a separate animated companion category with reactions, names, appearance rules, and its own progression. Owning a related Back Bling does not automatically prove that the account owns every companion version.
Epic made one launch exception for Bonesy: players who owned the Bonesy Back Bling were granted the Bonesy Sidekick in November 2025. Treat that as a documented grant, not a universal rule for converting old pet-style Back Blings into Sidekicks.
Fix common Fortnite Sidekick problems
Most Sidekick issues are caused by mode compatibility, a duplicate appearance, a non-customizable companion, or viewing the wrong Epic account. Use the specific symptom instead of repeatedly changing unrelated Locker settings.
Test Battle Royale first. Developer-made islands must explicitly enable Sidekicks.

Expected behaviorSidekicks can also become NPCs in creator islands
In June 2026, Epic added Sidekicks as scriptable NPCs for Unreal Editor for Fortnite. Creators can use supported companions for following, fetching, fleeing, attacking, reacting, and other designed behaviors. That creator-side NPC can have health, shield, size, and damage settings, but those UEFN controls do not turn the player’s cosmetic Sidekick into a Battle Royale advantage.
Cosmetic Sync can transform an island NPC into the Sidekick equipped by the joining player, including licensed Sidekicks. Epic also notes that licensed companions such as SpongeBob, Itchy, and Super Meat Boy cannot be selected as ordinary creator-side NPC templates, even though Cosmetic Sync can represent the player’s equipped licensed companion.
