It is not universally best or an official Riot recommendation, so compare it with red and purple using the same crosshair, map and distance.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”What enemy highlight colors are available in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”The current client offers four choices: Red (Default), Purple (Tritanopia), Yellow (Deuteranopia) and Yellow (Protanopia). The labels identify accessibility-oriented palettes; they are not four competitive strength tiers.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”How do you change the enemy outline color in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Open Settings, stay on the General tab, find Accessibility and change Enemy Highlight Color. Enter the Range afterward and verify the result against moving bots, different distances and your current crosshair before playing Competitive.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Is yellow better than red for enemy outlines in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Yellow is often more immediately visible against dark or cool backgrounds, while red is familiar and can separate better from warm yellow scenery or a yellow crosshair. Test both instead of assuming one remains clearer on every map.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Is Purple Tritanopia a good VALORANT enemy color?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Yes, especially when yellow blends with a map or your crosshair. Purple can provide strong separation from sand, wood and warm lighting, but it may be less distinct around purple abilities and effects. Use the Range and real map backgrounds to decide.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”What is the difference between Yellow Deuteranopia and Yellow Protanopia?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Both display a yellow-oriented enemy palette, but they are labeled for different red-green color-vision deficiencies. Players with typical color vision may see only a small difference. Choose the mode that is clearest to your own vision rather than treating the names as a performance ranking.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”What crosshair color works best with yellow enemy outlines?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Cyan, white with a dark outline, or a contrasting green usually keeps the crosshair separate from yellow enemies. Avoid using nearly the same yellow for both unless the crosshair has a strong black outline and remains visible during movement and ability effects.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Does Enemy Highlight Color affect FPS in VALORANT?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”It is a color and accessibility setting rather than a graphics-quality preset, so it should not be selected for an FPS gain. Its purpose is target separation. Diagnose frame-rate problems through the dedicated performance settings instead.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Can you change enemy highlight color on VALORANT Console?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Yes. Current console clients include Enemy Highlight Color in the settings experience. Menu placement can move with interface updates, but the same four color choices apply. Recheck the live menu after a major console UI patch.”}}, {“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Will changing enemy color improve aim or reaction time?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”A clearer outline can reduce visual hesitation and help you identify a target sooner, but it does not change weapon accuracy, recoil or network delay. Improvement depends on perception and consistency, so keep one tested color long enough to build recognition.”}} ] Quick answer

Start with Yellow (Deuteranopia), but test Red and Purple before committing.

Yellow Deuteranopia is a strong general recommendation because its bright outline often separates quickly from dark Agent models and cool backgrounds. It is not objectively best: Red can win on yellow scenery, while Purple can be clearer on warm maps or beside a yellow crosshair. Use one controlled test instead of copying a pro setting blindly.

The complete client list

The four VALORANT enemy highlight colors explained

Enemy Highlight Color changes the palette used to distinguish opposing players and some enemy-coded elements. It is not a full-screen color filter. The current client offers four choices under Accessibility: one default red, one purple Tritanopia palette and two yellow palettes for Deuteranopia and Protanopia.

RedDefault

Familiar danger color with strong separation from many blue, green and grey scenes. It can blend more with fire, damage indicators or warm red-orange effects.

Best for familiarity
PurpleTritanopia

Distinct from sand, wood and yellow lighting. It can compete visually with purple Agent abilities, skins or map accents in busy fights.

Best warm contrast
YellowDeuteranopia

Bright, fast to notice and a strong general starting point. It may lose separation on yellow walls, sunlight or a yellow crosshair.

Recommended start
YellowProtanopia

Another yellow-oriented accessibility palette. The visible difference from Deuteranopia may be small for players with typical color vision.

Test your vision

The labels describe color-vision targets, not competitive ranks. A player without a diagnosed color-vision deficiency may still prefer one of them, while a player with Deuteranopia or Protanopia should prioritize personal clarity over what streamers use.

Mockup note: the swatches in this article are visual approximations for comparison. They are not claims about Riot’s exact shader, luminance or outline hex values.
A recommendation with conditions

Is Yellow Deuteranopia really the best enemy color?

For a player who has never tested the setting, Yellow Deuteranopia is the most useful first candidate. Its high apparent brightness often separates the enemy silhouette from darker models and many blue-grey environments. That can reduce the fraction of a second spent deciding whether a shape is an opponent.

But “often clear” is different from “always best.” VALORANT maps include sand, wood, sunlight, neon effects, purple utility and red warning indicators. Your monitor, saturation, room lighting, eyesight and crosshair color can reverse the result. A player using a bright yellow crosshair may identify red enemies faster simply because the two critical signals no longer overlap.

A practical decision order

Try Yellow Deuteranopia first. If it disappears into bright or sandy scenery, compare Purple. If ability-heavy fights make purple noisy, return to Red. Only compare the two yellow modes after choosing yellow as the winning color family; many players will see less difference between them than between yellow, red and purple.

Do not change every match. Once one option wins a controlled test, keep it for several sessions. Consistent enemy recognition can matter more than endlessly chasing a theoretically perfect color.
The correct menu path

How to change Enemy Highlight Color on PC and console

The setting sits in VALORANT’s accessibility controls rather than Graphics Quality. Current PC documentation places it in Settings → General → Accessibility → Enemy Highlight Color. Console clients expose the same color choices, although Riot can move the exact menu placement during interface updates.

01Open Settings

Use the gear/menu from the main screen. Change the option outside a live fight so you can test deliberately.

Menu → Settings
02Stay on General

Find the Accessibility block near the top of the General settings list.

General → Accessibility
03Select the palette

Choose Red, Purple Tritanopia, Yellow Deuteranopia or Yellow Protanopia.

Enemy Highlight Color
04Verify in the Range

Check stationary and strafing bots at 10, 20 and 30 meters with your real crosshair.

Practice → The Range

The change should be visible immediately. If the menu differs after a major patch, use the live client search or inspect General and Accessibility rather than following an old screenshot word for word.

Riot’s 2026 Patch 12.06 notes confirm that Enemy Highlight Color is still integrated with current gameplay UI: Riot fixed a Veto Crosscut minimap icon issue specifically when the setting was red. That also shows why the option is broader than a cosmetic preference for one outline.

No restart should be the first troubleshooting step. Re-enter the Range or a fresh custom session and verify whether the target palette changed before resetting unrelated graphics settings.
Two signals must remain separate

Match the enemy outline to your crosshair color

The outline helps you find the target; the crosshair helps you place the shot. If both use nearly the same bright color, the crosshair can visually merge into the enemy at head level. Contrast between them is usually more useful than maximizing the brightness of each separately.

Recommended pairingYellow enemy + cyan crosshair

Strong hue separation while both remain bright. A thin black crosshair outline can add resilience on light walls.

Familiar pairingRed enemy + white crosshair

Simple and readable. Keep a dark outline if white disappears into sky, lights or pale architecture.

Warm-map pairingPurple enemy + green crosshair

Separates from sand and wood while keeping the reticle visually distinct from the target silhouette.

Crosshair suggestions by enemy color

Yellow enemies: begin with cyan, white plus black outline or a clear green. Red enemies: cyan, white, green and yellow can work if the map permits. Purple enemies: green, white or yellow usually creates stronger separation than pink or magenta.

Custom crosshair color is a separate feature. Riot added custom hex input in Patch 5.04, but the “best” hex still depends on outline and map. Use the dedicated VALORANT crosshair codes guide for shapes, gap, thickness and complete profiles.

Avoid a false precision claim: enemy outlines are rendered inside a changing 3D scene. A good crosshair pairing is one you can track during recoil, movement, smoke edges and ability VFX—not merely on a black settings screen.
A color must survive the whole map pool

Choose an outline that stays visible across real backgrounds

The Range is useful because it controls distance, but its palette cannot represent every live map. After narrowing the choice to two colors, test both against a dark corridor, warm outdoor architecture and ability-heavy fight.

Cool or dark sceneYellow often separates quickly

Blue-grey walls, shadowed corridors and dark Agent models make a bright yellow edge easy to acquire.

Sand and warm lightPurple or red may win

Yellow can lose contrast near tan stone, sunlight and gold effects; purple is an important comparison.

Purple utility sceneRed can reduce confusion

When smokes, abilities or skin VFX create violet clutter, default red may preserve a cleaner target signal.

Do not optimize for one screenshot

A target can look perfect while standing still in a clean corridor and disappear when strafing behind utility. Test close and long range, partially exposed shoulders, head glitches and moving targets. The winning color should remain identifiable before you consciously name the Agent.

Monitor saturation can exaggerate one palette. If Digital Vibrance, console color settings or a display preset is unusually strong, test at the exact values used in matches. Do not change monitor, enemy outline and crosshair simultaneously or you will not know which adjustment helped.

Map-proof choice: prefer the color that remains second-best everywhere over one that is brilliant on a single wall and poor on half the pool.
Accessibility comes before meta imitation

Deuteranopia, Protanopia and Tritanopia settings

The accessibility labels correspond to different color-vision deficiencies. Purple is labeled Tritanopia. The two yellow choices are labeled Deuteranopia and Protanopia, both within red-green color-vision deficiency categories. They exist to provide distinguishable team information, not to diagnose vision.

PurpleTritanopia option

Designed around a blue-yellow color-vision deficiency. Players without it can still choose purple if the palette is clearest.

YellowDeuteranopia option

A yellow-oriented palette for a green-sensitive red-green deficiency. Often recommended generally, but perception remains individual.

YellowProtanopia option

A separate yellow-oriented palette for a red-sensitive red-green deficiency. Compare both yellow modes directly if relevant.

Do not tell a player with color-vision deficiency that one community favorite must be clearer. Use the mode matching known needs as a starting point, then confirm readability in motion. If no palette makes critical information distinct, platform-level color filters may help, but they also transform the entire image and must be tested carefully.

Enemy Highlight Color does not recolor every interface element or create a complete medical accessibility profile. Riot’s Patch 12.06 bug involving a Veto minimap icon demonstrates that individual enemy-coded elements can still need specific fixes.

Accessibility safety: this guide explains game options, not eye health. Sudden or worsening difficulty distinguishing colors should be discussed with a qualified vision professional rather than solved only through saturation.
Ten minutes, one variable

A repeatable test for your best enemy outline

A useful test changes only Enemy Highlight Color. Keep resolution, brightness, crosshair, monitor preset and room lighting fixed. Compare no more than three candidates in one session so your visual memory does not become noise.

01Fix the setup

Use the exact crosshair, resolution, monitor and lighting used in real matches.

02Check distance

Identify stationary bots at roughly 10, 20 and 30 meters without staring at one target.

03Add motion

Enable strafing bots and track the head while counter-strafing or changing direction.

04Change scenery

Use a custom map or Deathmatch to compare dark, warm and ability-heavy backgrounds.

05Keep the winner

Run one color for several sessions. Re-test only if a repeated visibility problem appears.

What to record

Do not judge only by kills. Note whether you confuse allies and enemies, lose the head outline behind the crosshair, notice shoulder peeks late or hesitate near certain walls. The goal is consistent target acquisition, not a short hot streak.

Enemy color will not repair poor positioning, crosshair placement or recoil control. Pair this visibility test with the existing VALORANT aim routine rather than claiming the palette itself creates better mechanics.

Simple scoring: rate each color from 1–5 for close range, long range, warm scenery, dark scenery and crosshair separation. Keep the highest consistent total, not the most fashionable option.
Visibility myths to avoid

Common Enemy Highlight Color mistakes

  • Copying a pro without copying the visual context. Their monitor, saturation, crosshair and stream image can differ from yours.
  • Using a yellow crosshair on yellow enemies without separation. Add a dark outline or choose a contrasting crosshair.
  • Testing only in the Range. Add warm architecture, dark corridors and real ability VFX before deciding.
  • Changing outline, monitor and graphics together. Isolate one variable or the result cannot be attributed.
  • Treating colorblind labels as competitive tiers. They are accessibility palettes, and individual perception comes first.
  • Expecting an FPS or aim-stat boost. The setting changes target presentation, not frame rendering quality or weapon accuracy.
  • Switching colors after every bad match. Recognition benefits from consistency; change only for a repeated visibility reason.

General graphics decisions such as Improve Clarity, Bloom, detail quality and frame caps belong in the Best VALORANT Settings guide. Resolution behavior belongs in the separate stretched-resolution guide. Keeping those scopes separate prevents this page from becoming another generic settings list.

One-setting rule: this article answers which enemy palette you can see reliably. It intentionally does not prescribe sensitivity, graphics quality, audio or every crosshair dimension.

VALORANT enemy highlight color FAQ

What is the best enemy highlight color in VALORANT in 2026?

Yellow (Deuteranopia) is the strongest general starting point because many players find its bright outline easy to separate from Agent models and darker backgrounds. It is not universally best or an official Riot recommendation, so compare it with red and purple using the same crosshair, map and distance.

What enemy highlight colors are available in VALORANT?

The current client offers four choices: Red (Default), Purple (Tritanopia), Yellow (Deuteranopia) and Yellow (Protanopia). The labels identify accessibility-oriented palettes; they are not four competitive strength tiers.

How do you change the enemy outline color in VALORANT?

Open Settings, stay on the General tab, find Accessibility and change Enemy Highlight Color. Enter the Range afterward and verify the result against moving bots, different distances and your current crosshair before playing Competitive.

Is yellow better than red for enemy outlines in VALORANT?

Yellow is often more immediately visible against dark or cool backgrounds, while red is familiar and can separate better from warm yellow scenery or a yellow crosshair. Test both instead of assuming one remains clearer on every map.

Is Purple Tritanopia a good VALORANT enemy color?

Yes, especially when yellow blends with a map or your crosshair. Purple can provide strong separation from sand, wood and warm lighting, but it may be less distinct around purple abilities and effects. Use the Range and real map backgrounds to decide.

What is the difference between Yellow Deuteranopia and Yellow Protanopia?

Both display a yellow-oriented enemy palette, but they are labeled for different red-green color-vision deficiencies. Players with typical color vision may see only a small difference. Choose the mode that is clearest to your own vision rather than treating the names as a performance ranking.

What crosshair color works best with yellow enemy outlines?

Cyan, white with a dark outline, or a contrasting green usually keeps the crosshair separate from yellow enemies. Avoid using nearly the same yellow for both unless the crosshair has a strong black outline and remains visible during movement and ability effects.

Does Enemy Highlight Color affect FPS in VALORANT?

It is a color and accessibility setting rather than a graphics-quality preset, so it should not be selected for an FPS gain. Its purpose is target separation. Diagnose frame-rate problems through the dedicated performance settings instead.

Can you change enemy highlight color on VALORANT Console?

Yes. Current console clients include Enemy Highlight Color in the settings experience. Menu placement can move with interface updates, but the same four color choices apply. Recheck the live menu after a major console UI patch.

Will changing enemy color improve aim or reaction time?

A clearer outline can reduce visual hesitation and help you identify a target sooner, but it does not change weapon accuracy, recoil or network delay. Improvement depends on perception and consistency, so keep one tested color long enough to build recognition.
