VALORANT Chargeback and Negative VP Guide 2026
Understand why a reversed payment can remove content, leave a negative VP balance and block future store purchases.
Restore a positive balance to buy more VP.
A VALORANT chargeback is a reversed payment, not a normal refund.
Riot can recover current VP and eligible content bought with VP. If the remaining balance stays negative, you can still play, but you cannot buy more VP until the balance becomes positive again.

What is a VALORANT chargeback?
A chargeback occurs when a bank, card issuer or payment provider reverses a purchase of paid in-game currency. In VALORANT, that usually means a VP payment connected to the Riot account is taken back.
This is not the same as asking Riot to refund an eligible purchase. Riot treats a chargeback as a reversed payment and can recover the unpaid value from the account.
Purchase reversed
The payment provider returns the money connected to the VP purchase.
Value reclaimed
Riot can use current VP and eligible content to recover the amount.
Store access affected
A remaining negative VP balance can block further VP purchases.
How a negative VALORANT Points balance works
For VALORANT chargebacks after June 4, 2024, Riot says its systems can recover the amount from current VP and content purchased with VP. If eligible content does not cover the full amount, the balance can remain negative.
Payment reverses
The original VP transaction is taken back by the payment provider.
VP is checked
Available VP can be used toward the outstanding amount.
Content is reviewed
Eligible VP purchases may be removed in proportion to the debt.
Purchases pause
More VP cannot be bought while the balance remains negative.
What Riot may remove after a chargeback
Riot says weapon skins, agents and other eligible items bought with VP can be removed in proportion to the outstanding amount. If the removed content is worth more than the balance owed, Riot says the difference is returned as VP.
Available currency can be applied to the reversed payment amount.
Eligible skins purchased with VP can be removed from the collection.
Other eligible VP purchases can also be used for recovery.
Store purchases stay limited if the resulting balance is negative.

Gift chargebacks and third party VP
A reversed gifting payment can affect more than one account. Riot states that both the sender and recipient can have gifting suspended when a chargeback occurs during a VALORANT gifting transaction.
Gifting can pause
The account that sent the gift can lose gifting access.
Both sides can be hit
The receiving account can also have gifting suspended.
The debt stays with you
Riot says third party VP chargebacks still need to be repaid in full.
VALORANT refund versus chargeback
A refund is requested through Riot for an eligible purchase. A chargeback is initiated through a bank or payment provider and tells Riot that the original payment was reversed or disputed.
Normal refund
- Uses Riot’s official refund route
- Applies only to eligible purchases
- Follows the published refund policy
Payment chargeback
- Reverses a payment outside the refund flow
- Can trigger VP and content recovery
- Can limit purchases, gifting or account access
What to do about an unauthorized Riot charge
If someone else used the account or payment method, secure the email and Riot login immediately. Then report the unauthorized transaction through official Riot Player Support so Riot can investigate the account and payment details.
Change the email password and remove unknown sessions or recovery methods.
Use a new unique password and enable supported MFA.
Keep transaction IDs, dates, amounts and payment method details ready.
Report the unauthorized charge through Riot’s official support route.
Chargeback warning signs worth checking
High value skins do not automatically mean the account is clean. Missing content, a negative VP balance, disabled purchases or unexplained gifting restrictions can point to unresolved payment history.
Negative VP
Further VP purchases can remain blocked until the balance is restored.
Missing skins
Ask why previously shown content is no longer visible on the account.
Store restrictions
Confirm that VP purchases and gifting work as expected before valuing extras.
VALORANT chargeback and negative VP FAQ
What is a VALORANT chargeback?
A chargeback happens when a bank or payment provider reverses a purchase of paid in-game currency such as VALORANT Points. It is different from using Riot’s normal refund process.
Can a VALORANT VP balance become negative?
Yes. Riot says a balance can remain negative after eligible VP and content have been recovered. The account can still play, but additional VP purchases are blocked until the balance is positive again.
What can Riot remove after a VALORANT chargeback?
For qualifying chargebacks, Riot says current VP and content purchased with VP may be recovered in proportion to the outstanding amount. This can include weapon skins, agents and other eligible items.
Do skins return after a VALORANT chargeback is repaid?
Riot states that content removed because of a chargeback is not automatically returned after the balance is restored. The content would need to be purchased again.
Is a chargeback the same as a VALORANT refund?
No. A refund uses Riot’s refund process for eligible purchases. A chargeback is a payment reversal through a bank or payment provider and can trigger account recovery measures.
Can a gift chargeback affect both VALORANT accounts?
Yes. Riot states that a chargeback during a gifting transaction can suspend gifting for both the sending account and the receiving account.
What should you do about an unauthorized Riot charge?
Secure the email and Riot account, then report the unauthorized charge through official Riot Player Support. Follow Riot’s instructions before starting a separate payment dispute.
Can repeated Riot chargebacks lead to a permanent ban?
Riot says it reserves the right to permanently ban a Riot account when multiple chargebacks occur. The outcome depends on the individual account and case.
