VCT Stage 2 2026 Format Explained
Groups, Challenger Play-Ins, eight-team Playoffs and every route to Champions Shanghai in one clean guide.
Stage 2 starts with two groups of six partnered teams in each International League. The top two teams per group go straight to Playoffs. The other eight join four Challenger teams in a double-elimination Play-In; four Play-In winners complete the eight-team Playoff bracket. The Stage 2 champion, runner-up and two remaining Championship-Point leaders from each region qualify for Champions Shanghai.
The 2026 Stage 2 flow
Riot redesigned Stage 2 around a more open Path to Champions. Partnered VCT teams still begin in the regional league, but Challenger teams now enter the same Play-In pressure cooker instead of waiting for a separate Ascension-style route. That is why the lower half of every group matters as much as the top.
| Phase | Field | Format | What advances |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group Stage | 12 VCT teams, split 6 + 6 | Single round robin, Bo3 | Top 2 from each group to Playoffs; remaining 8 to Play-Ins |
| Play-Ins | 8 VCT teams + 4 Challengers | Double elimination, Bo3 | Top 4 to Playoffs |
| Playoffs | 4 direct qualifiers + 4 Play-In winners | Eight-team double elimination | Champion and runner-up qualify for Champions |
| Championship Points | All regional teams | Season-long ranking | Top 2 remaining points leaders qualify for Champions |
Group Stage: six teams, one round robin
Each International League begins with 12 VCT teams drawn into two groups of six. Inside a group, every team plays the other five once in a best-of-three. The group stage is therefore short enough for every match to matter, but long enough to expose a weak map pool or a one-dimensional composition.
A top-two finish is more than a better seed: it removes four Challenger rosters and eight league teams from your immediate route. Teams finishing third through sixth still have a path, but they must play additional elimination matches before they can reach the final bracket.
Play-Ins: the new Path to Champions pressure point
The Play-In field combines the eight VCT teams that did not finish in the top two of their group with the four best Challenger teams from the regional Path to Champions. All 12 teams enter a double-elimination bracket. The top four survive into Playoffs; the other eight are eliminated from the Stage 2 bracket.
Regional format pages give the third- and fourth-place group finishers an upper-bracket bye in the opening round. That reward makes the final group matches strategically important: a team can miss direct Playoffs but still protect itself from one early danger match.
Playoffs: eight teams, one final regional race
The Playoff bracket has eight teams: four group-stage winners and four Play-In survivors. The bracket is double elimination, so a single series loss does not end the run, but the lower bracket quickly turns every map veto into a season decision. The first-place group seeds receive the cleanest entry in the regional bracket, while Play-In survivors have to prove they can keep winning after a much heavier route.
The global handbook describes the eight-team structure; regional event pages should be used for the exact seed order, venue, broadcast window and any local bracket notation. Regional finals commonly reserve best-of-five series for the lower final and grand final, so always check the live event page before publishing a fixed match-time graphic.
| Team route | Matches before Playoffs | Competitive advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Group #1 | Group series only | Direct entry and best seeding |
| Group #2 | Group series only | Direct entry, slightly harder seed |
| Group #3–#4 | Group + Play-In bracket | Upper-bracket bye in published regional format |
| Group #5–#6 | Group + opening Play-In match | Must win immediately |
| Challenger qualifier | Path to Champions + Play-In | Momentum and upset potential |
How Stage 2 feeds Champions Shanghai
Stage 2 has four Champions qualifiers per region. The first two are the Stage 2 champion and runner-up. The other two are the highest Championship-Point earners who have not already qualified through the Playoff finish. That creates a direct-performance path and a consistency path.
Across four regions, those four routes produce the 16-team Champions Shanghai field. A points table can therefore stay relevant even after a team misses direct Playoffs, while a Stage 2 champion can remove one points slot from the remaining race.

Five signals that explain the bracket
- Group position: top two means direct Playoffs; third and fourth can protect an upper-bracket bye.
- Map differential: a team winning close series but losing maps may be fragile in a double-elimination run.
- Challenger form: recent Tier 2 match volume can make the Play-In field much less predictable.
- Championship Points: count the points route separately from the current bracket route.
- Role flexibility: patch and map changes show which teams can adapt without forcing comfort picks.
For live tracking, combine the ALVIRAN results table with the official regional bracket. That keeps the explanation readable without pretending a static article can replace a live standings page.
