Looking for a League of Legends account?
Compare champions, skins, rank and server on every listing. This guide explains how the name on an account works.
1. What a Riot ID is
Riot replaced Summoner Names with the Riot ID, a name used across all Riot games. Riot's Riot ID FAQ splits it into two parts. In “EarlGreyTeemo#sip”, the game name is EarlGreyTeemo and the tagline is #sip.
Two details are easy to miss. The Riot ID is not your login name, which is a separate credential. And each Riot ID is tied to a single email, so changing it changes how you appear in every Riot game, not only in League.
2. How to change it, step by step
Open your Riot Account page
Riot says the process is the same whichever Riot game you play. Check that you are signed in to the right account if you have more than one.
Edit the game name and the tagline
Change either part or both. The rules for each part are in the next section.
Save the changes
Click Save Changes. If you try a region code as the tagline, you may see an error that the Riot ID is already in use.
Or start in the client
On PC, League and TFT players can enter the Shop, click the Account button and select the Riot ID Change offer. It opens account.riotgames.com, where you enter the new Riot ID.
3. What the rules allow
| Part | Length | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Game name | 3 to 16 alphanumeric characters | Cannot be offensive or inappropriate. It does not have to be unique, as long as the whole Riot ID is not already taken. |
| Tagline | 3 to 5 alphanumeric characters | Starts with a region code by default. Once you change it, you cannot go back to any region code. It also cannot be offensive or inappropriate. |
Riot's page on changing your Riot ID lists the region codes that are no longer available as a tagline: BR, LAS, LAN, OCE, NA, EUW, EUNE, TR, RU, KR, JP, PBE, BR1, LA1, LA2, OC1, NA1, ME, TW, VN and SEA. Riot adds that if you try one of these you may see a “this Riot ID is already in use” message, and that the fix is to choose a different tagline.
A name is not a value
A Riot ID can change every 90 days, so judge a listing by its champions, skins, rank and server instead.
4. The 90-day cooldown
Riot says you can change your Riot ID for free on a 90-day cooldown. The page explains that after the one-time free change Riot gave all players on 20 November 2023, it takes 90 days from your last free change before the next one is available.
There is one exception. If you changed your Riot ID within the last 90 days but are experiencing harassment or other negative effects because of it, you can submit a ticket to Player Support. Riot also states that there are no paid Riot ID changes, so, on Riot's wording, there is no paid way to skip the cooldown.
Check the page before you rely on a number. Riot revises its support articles, and older guides on other sites still quote a paid change or a different waiting period. The Riot pages we checked on 12 October 2026 say free and 90 days.
5. Why a change does not go through
| Situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “This Riot ID is already in use” | The whole name and tagline combination is taken, or you tried a region code as a tagline. | Keep the game name and change the tagline. |
| You changed it recently | The free change is on a 90-day cooldown from your last one. | Wait for the cooldown, or contact Player Support if the name is causing harassment. |
| Name rejected | The game name or tagline is offensive or inappropriate. | Pick a different name. |
| Wrong name changed | You were signed in to a different account than the one in game. | Sign out and open the Riot Account page for the right email. |
6. What a name tells you about an account
A Riot ID tells you very little. It is free to change, it can be changed again after 90 days, and it does not show rank, skins, champions or server. A strong-looking name on a listing is a style choice and not a fact about the account.
The things that are hard to change are the server and the collection. Moving a League account to another region is a paid transfer with its own rules, which our server transfer guide explains, and champions and skins stay on the account. Our LoL account guide shows how to read those.
7. Five questions before you buy
- Which server is the account on, and is it the one you play on?
- Which champions and skins does the listing show, and how are they counted?
- What is the rank, in which queue, and from what date?
- Is the Riot ID free to change, and when was the last change made?
- Does the listing say anything about the email and security settings on the account?
8. Four mistakes people make
Paying for a change
Riot says there are no paid Riot ID changes. Be sceptical of anyone selling one.
Using a region code as a tagline
Riot lists NA1, EUW and similar region codes as unavailable. A tagline starts as a region code, but you cannot go back to one.
Changing the wrong account
A Riot ID is tied to one email. Check which account you are signed in to.
Valuing a name
A name can change every 90 days. Weigh the collection and the server.
Frequently asked questions
Is changing my League of Legends name free?
Yes. Riot says you can change your Riot ID for free on a 90-day cooldown, and that there are no paid Riot ID changes.
How often can I change my Riot ID?
Once every 90 days from your last free change. If a recent name is causing you harassment, Riot says to submit a ticket to Player Support.
Can I use NA1 or EUW as my tagline?
Not after you change it. Riot lists region codes such as NA1 and EUW as unavailable once you have changed your tagline.
Does my game name have to be unique?
No. Riot says the game name does not have to be unique, as long as the full Riot ID, name plus tagline, is not already taken.
Does a new Riot ID change my name in other Riot games?
Yes. Riot says the Riot ID is used across all its games and that changing it changes how you appear in-game everywhere.
Is my Riot ID the same as my login name?
No. Riot's FAQ says the Riot ID is not the login name you use to sign in to your account.
Ready to choose an account?
Look at the server first, because a name can change but a region costs RP to move. For region and ranked access, read our LoL account guide.
