Looking for a GTA account?
Compare platform, level, cash and bank balance on every listing. This guide explains what the characters on an account mean.
1. Two characters in GTA Online
Rockstar's article on deleting characters states that you can have two characters in GTA Online and delete either one. The steps depend on the platform.
| Platform | Menu path |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Enhanced) | Pause Menu, then Online, then Manage Characters. |
| PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC (Legacy) | Pause Menu, then Online, then Swap Characters. |
Profiles are separate. Rockstar's migration guides say that after a migration the old profile is retained and progress is not synced between them, which suggests each platform or version profile has its own slots. Rockstar's deletion article only says you can have two characters in GTA Online.
On both, you select the character, press your platform's Delete button, confirm, and type “delete” to delete it permanently. Rockstar says to look at the bottom of the game screen to see which button is Delete on your platform.
2. What the Career Builder is
Rockstar's Career Builder overview describes it as a feature on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Enhanced) designed to give new players, or players who want to reset their current character, a head start. When you create a new character or overwrite a profile, you choose one of four criminal career paths.
| Item | What Rockstar says |
|---|---|
| Paths | Biker, Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner. |
| Start money | GTA$4,000,000 to use toward start-up essentials such as Properties, Vehicles and Weapons. |
| What you keep | After you make your selections, you can bring a maximum of GTA$1,000,000 from the original GTA$4,000,000 into GTA Online. |
| How often | The Career Builder and the start-up GTA$4,000,000 can only be experienced once. |
| Platforms | Only PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Enhanced). |
3. Deleting a character after a career path
If you delete a character that has already chosen one of the criminal career paths, Rockstar says you will not be able to go through the Career Builder again on a new character or receive the GTA$4,000,000 balance.
Deleting is permanent. Rockstar's article says that deleting a character that had chosen a career path means no second run through the Career Builder and no second GTA$4,000,000. A character that began with a path has used the head start.
Ask about both characters
GTA Online allows two characters. Compare what a listing shows about each with the rules in this guide.
4. What migration does to a slot
When a profile is migrated, Rockstar's guides send you to the Review Character screen. For the PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S move and the Legacy to Enhanced move on PC, both say that continuing with a new character overwrites the existing character slot, and that if you have not created a new character through the Career Builder, you are taken to its selection screen.
The same guides add that some profiles may not be eligible for migration for several reasons, such as suspensions or bans, or illegitimate or insufficient progress, and that Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack benefits can only be accessed by the character that had them before the move.
5. Reading characters on a listing
| Detail | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Two characters listed | That both slots are used. | Which one the stats belong to. |
| A Career Builder start | That the head start was used by that character. | Whether the other slot has used it or can still use it. Rockstar says only that it can be experienced once. |
| Level or balance | Progress on the day of the screenshot. | Which character, or how it was earned. |
| A migrated profile | That the move happened. | That the other platform copy is synced. Rockstar says it is not. |
Our level guide and money guide cover the numbers.
6. Five questions before you buy
- How many characters are on the account, and which one is the listing about?
- Did the character use the Career Builder, and which path did it choose?
- Which platform and version is it, so the Career Builder rule applies or not?
- Was the profile migrated, and from where?
- Is the screenshot dated and matched to the platform account?
7. Four mistakes people make
Expecting a second head start
The Career Builder and its GTA$4,000,000 can only be experienced once.
Assuming it exists everywhere
It is only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced.
Deleting before checking
Deletion is permanent, and a character that chose a path cannot redo the Career Builder.
Mixing up the two characters
One screenshot can belong to either slot.
