Looking for a GTA Online account?
Compare level, cash and bank balance on every listing. This guide explains what a GTA$ balance does and does not show.
1. Cash on hand and bank balance
GTA Online keeps two figures. Cash on hand is the money the character is carrying, and the bank balance is the money held at Maze Bank. A listing that shows one total can hide the split. According to the community wiki, in Free Mode a character killed with GTA$5,000 or more drops part of the held cash, and banked money cannot be picked up by others. Rockstar's pages do not cover this, but it shows why the same total can mean different things.
The practical advice is to read the two figures separately. A character with a large bank balance and little cash is in a different position from the reverse, and a listing that only states a combined number leaves the question open.
3. Earned money and purchased money are different
Rockstar's article on GTA$ transfers during profile migration defines the two kinds. Purchased GTA$ is money gained from Shark Cards, platform membership programs and similar sources. Earned GTA$ is money gained from playing.
| Kind | Examples | What happens in a migration |
|---|---|---|
| Earned GTA$ | Money from missions, heists and other play. | Transfers regardless of platform family. |
| Purchased GTA$ | Shark Cards and platform membership programs. | Transfers only within the same platform family, such as PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. |
| Unspent GTA$ in the Enhanced version | Any balance already in the Enhanced version. | Migrating a PC Legacy profile removes it from the Enhanced balance, and the Legacy profile is kept. |
The same article adds that PC Shark Card purchases made after 4 March 2025 are deposited to Maze Bank accounts on both the Legacy and Enhanced versions on PC.
Read cash and bank as two figures
The shop shows cash and bank balance for each listing. Compare them with the questions in this guide.
4. What migration means for a balance
A profile that has been migrated exists in two places. Rockstar's PC migration guide says the Legacy profile and its progress are retained, and the Enhanced profile receives the migrated progress. A listing that quotes a GTA$ figure must therefore say which version and platform it refers to. Rockstar's page does not say more about how the Legacy balance carries over, so ask the seller to show both versions. Our Legacy vs Enhanced guide explains the routes in detail.
5. What Rockstar says about illegitimate money
Rockstar's support page on money removal and RP adjustments says it is aware of cheaters who manipulate in-game funds and RP, and that it removes illegitimately gained GTA$ and adjusts RP levels. Affected players see corrections being made. GTA$ purchased via Shark Cards stays on the account and is not affected.
Rockstar's PC migration guide also says that a profile may not be eligible for migration because of suspensions or bans, or because the profile has illegitimate or insufficient progress. A large balance is therefore not a guarantee of anything. It is a number that may be corrected later if it was gained illegitimately.
A balance can go down after a sale. Rockstar's May 2024 support page says it routinely sweeps for illegitimately gained GTA$ and corrects affected accounts. Ask where the money came from, and treat an unusually large figure with caution.
6. What a balance shows, and what it does not
| Detail | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Cash on hand | Money carried at that moment. | How much is safe, or where it came from. |
| Bank balance | Money held at Maze Bank. | Whether it was earned or bought. |
| A very large total | That the listing displayed a large amount. | That it was legitimate, or that it will stay. |
| Rank | RP earned. | Money, properties or vehicles. |
| Platform and version | Where the balance exists. | Whether it moves to another platform. |
7. Five questions before you buy
- What are cash and bank, as two separate figures?
- Which platform and which version, Legacy or Enhanced, is the balance from?
- Ask the seller how much of the balance was earned in play and how much came from Shark Cards.
- Does the balance look plausible for the rank and the playtime?
- What is the date of the screenshot?
8. Four mistakes that cost money
Reading a total as one pool
Cash and bank behave differently. Ask for both.
Ignoring the source
Earned, purchased and illegitimate money are treated differently by Rockstar.
Mixing versions
Migration removes any unspent GTA$ already in the Enhanced balance.
Trusting a huge balance
Rockstar corrects illegitimately gained GTA$, so a large number can shrink.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Shark Card cap in GTA Online?
Rockstar says the maximum GTA$ obtained via Shark Card purchases that a player can have at one time is GTA$50,000,000. Any excess is credited as you spend.
What is the difference between earned and purchased GTA$?
Earned GTA$ comes from playing the game. Purchased GTA$ comes from Shark Cards and platform membership programs. They transfer differently when a profile migrates.
What happens to my GTA$ when I migrate to GTA V Enhanced?
Rockstar says that migrating a PC Legacy profile removes any unspent GTA$ already in the Enhanced balance. The Legacy profile is retained, and Rockstar's page does not describe the Legacy balance beyond the earned and purchased rules.
Does Rockstar remove illegitimate GTA$?
Yes. Its support page says it removes illegitimately gained GTA$ and adjusts RP levels. GTA$ purchased via Shark Cards is not affected.
Are cash and bank the same?
No. Cash on hand and the bank balance are separate figures, and the community wiki says held cash can be dropped on death.
Does a high balance prove an account is legitimate?
No. A balance shows an amount at one moment and says nothing about its source.
