Looking for a GTA Online account?
Compare level, cash and bank balance on every listing. This guide explains how the Rockstar account and platform links work.
1. Two layers: the Rockstar account and the platform account
A Rockstar Games account is the account you sign in to at rockstargames.com. It holds the identity layer: the email, the nickname and the security settings. GTA Online itself runs on a platform: Steam, Epic Games or the Xbox app on PC, or PlayStation or Xbox on console. Rockstar's page on unlinking accounts explains that the two are connected by a link.
Which progress belongs to which layer depends on the platform. On console, Story Mode and Online Play character progress is linked to the Xbox Gamertag or PSN ID. If a new account is linked to the Rockstar Games account, that progress is lost. That is why a listing must name the platform account behind the character.
2. Linking and unlinking by platform
| Platform | How a link is changed | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation and Xbox | Directly from the Connections page of the Rockstar Games account. | Only one account from each platform can be linked at a time. |
| Steam, Epic Games and Xbox app for PC | Only by a support request to Rockstar Support. | Eligibility depends on the status of the Rockstar Games account. |
| After any PC link change | A cooldown applies to further link changes. | Rockstar Support cannot bypass the cooldown. |
| Accounts with security actions | Not eligible for unlinking during a suspension or ban. | Rockstar's policy says so explicitly. |
These rules come from Rockstar's PC account unlinking policy, last updated in February 2026, and its page on unlinking an account.
3. Why the PC link matters most
On PC, the platform account is a Steam, Epic Games or Xbox app account, and Rockstar limits changes to it. Support has to make the change, a cooldown follows, and an account is not eligible for unlinking while a suspension or ban is in place. Rockstar does not say how long the cooldown lasts. It mentions one-time exceptions for a mistaken initial link, but only when the account has no gameplay time or progress, so that does not apply to an account with a character.
What a listing should state. Which platform account is linked, and which version of the game the character belongs to. A listing that only says “GTA Online account” leaves the most important fact open.
Ask which platform a listing belongs to
The shop shows level, cash and bank balance. Check the platform and version against the links described in this guide.
4. 2-Step Verification
Rockstar's 2-Step Verification guide says it can be set up with an authenticator app on a mobile device or in a browser. It requires the email on the account to be verified first. The steps in the guide run through the account icon, Account, Manage Account and Security, where a QR code or a secret key is shown, followed by a code and the account password.
Rockstar's guide covers setup only. It does not say what happens to 2-Step Verification if an account changes hands, which the terms do not allow. Whether it is enabled is a security fact and not a progress fact, and a listing should state it.
5. Email and nickname
According to Rockstar's nickname and email page, a nickname can only be changed once every 365 days. Changing the email address may lose access to previous support requests, and the new address should be one the player uses regularly, not a work or school address, secured with 2-Step Verification and from a well-known domain.
6. What Rockstar's terms say
Rockstar's Terms of Service, last updated on 28 February 2025, say that you agree not to sell, transfer or share your Account or its username or password. They add that the Account and Virtual Items are licensed, not sold, and that Virtual Items have no monetary value and may not be sold or transferred. They also prohibit participating in or operating a commercial enterprise or market that purports to sell, share, exchange or transfer Virtual Items or Accounts.
No listing can change those terms, and nothing a check of the account shows does either.
7. What a listing should state
- The platform and version, and the platform account type.
- Whether 2-Step Verification is enabled.
- The status of the Rockstar Games account, including any suspension or ban.
- The date of the information, since policies and links can change.
- Anything the listing cannot state, rather than assuming it.
8. Four mistakes that cost money
Ignoring the platform
Console progress is tied to the Gamertag or PSN ID, and a new link loses it.
Assuming links can be changed quickly
PC links need Rockstar Support and a cooldown follows.
Skipping 2-Step Verification
Ask whether it is on.
Assuming terms allow transfers
Rockstar's terms say an Account may not be sold, transferred or shared.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Rockstar Games account and a Steam account?
The Rockstar Games account is the identity layer you sign in to at rockstargames.com. The Steam, Epic or console account is the platform account linked to it.
Can I unlink a Steam or Epic account myself?
Rockstar says Steam, Epic Games and Xbox app for PC accounts must be unlinked by Rockstar Support, and eligibility depends on the status of the account.
Is there a cooldown after changing a PC link?
Yes. Rockstar says any PC platform link change starts a cooldown, and support agents cannot bypass it.
What happens to console progress if I link a new account?
Rockstar says console character progress is linked to the Xbox Gamertag or PSN ID, and linking a new account to the Rockstar Games account loses that progress.
How does 2-Step Verification work?
Rockstar's guide says it uses an authenticator app. You scan a QR code or enter a secret key, then confirm with a code and your account password.
Do Rockstar's terms allow selling an account?
No. They say you agree not to sell, transfer or share your Account or its username or password.
