Looking for a GTA account?
Compare platform, level, cash and bank balance on every listing. This guide explains how bans and resets work.
1. What triggers a suspension or ban
Rockstar's suspension and ban policy (last updated 24 February 2026) says account security actions are triggered by violations of its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service, and depending on the severity they result in a suspension or a permanent ban from one or more Online Services. They can affect your Rockstar Games account and/or your gaming system.
A second article, on the impact of suspensions and bans (last updated 10 December 2024), names the behaviours. They include modding in online games, exploiting or abusing game mechanics, participating in “money lobbies”, account boosting, account “recovery”, promoting methods of abuse or glitching, promoting modding of online games, manipulating protected game data and code, and interfering with other players' gameplay.
2. Suspension vs ban
| Topic | Suspension | Ban |
|---|---|---|
| When it starts | Immediately. The expiry date shows on the Alert screen. | Immediately. |
| How long | Until the expiry date. Online play then works again. | No expiration date. |
| Characters and progress | Characters, progress, property and inventory may be reset (policy article), and will be reset on the suspended title (impact article). | Access to characters, progress, property, inventory and virtual currency becomes inaccessible and may be reset. |
| What comes next | The policy says a further violation may lead to a permanent ban from Online Services. The impact article says the account will be permanently banned for that title. | Some accounts are banned from all titles without a suspension first, for cheat development, malicious attacks or other egregious violations. |
Two articles, two verbs. The policy article says a suspended character's progress, property and inventory “may” be reset. The impact article says online characters are reset and that all progress, property and inventory on the suspended title are reset. The newer policy page (February 2026) says “may” and the older impact article (December 2024) says “will”. Rockstar does not say which applies, so do not assume the character survives a suspension.
3. BattlEye on PC
Rockstar's BattlEye FAQ describes BattlEye as kernel anti-cheat software that protects online players from cheaters. It is used to detect attempts to use cheating software that accesses GTA Online servers, attempts to manipulate protected game code and the sabotage of other players' experience. It only needs to be active during online play sessions, and Official Rockstar Community (RP) Servers do not require it.
| Topic | What Rockstar says |
|---|---|
| Account actions | BattlEye detects active cheat software, and account actions could include suspensions or bans from Rockstar titles and services. |
| What it monitors | IP address, game identifiers, hardware identifiers, operating system information, game and system files and memory, running processes and drivers, and file names. |
| Steam Deck | Not supported for GTA Online. You can play Story Mode but not GTA Online. |
| Graphics mods | Tools such as ReShade and Special_K may cause technical issues. Remove them to troubleshoot. |
| “BattlEye is required” alert | Appears if BattlEye is disabled on PC, or if you try to launch GTA Online on a Steam Deck, which is not supported. On PC you enable it manually by closing the game, opening the Rockstar Games Launcher, selecting Settings and checking the BattlEye box. See Rockstar's alert screen article. |
Ask about the account's history
A balance or level can be reset after a security action. Compare what a listing says about history with this guide.
4. Appeals
Rockstar says suspension and ban decisions may be appealed using its appeal form. It also warns that the Community Guidelines apply to appeal requests, and that baseless appeals, or conduct that violates the Guidelines or Terms of Service, may result in the appeal being closed or additional actions on your account.
5. Bans, progress and migration
Account history matters when progress moves. Rockstar's migration articles say some profiles may not be eligible for migration for several reasons, such as account suspensions or bans, or the profile having illegitimate or insufficient progress. The statement appears in the PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Series X|S guide and, in similar words, in the Legacy to Enhanced guide.
That is one more reason a level or balance should be read with the account's history. Our money guide covers the balances.
6. What an account's history means for a buyer
| Detail | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| A high balance or rank | Progress on the day of the screenshot. | How it was earned, or that it survives a later security action. |
| “No bans” | A claim by the seller. | The account's history on Rockstar's side. |
| Account age | How long the account has existed. | That the progress is legitimate. |
| Migrated profile | That migration was possible. | That the character is unaffected by a later action. |
7. Five questions before you buy
- Has the account ever been suspended or banned, and how is that documented?
- How was the money or rank earned, and does it involve any behaviour Rockstar lists as a violation?
- On PC, is BattlEye running without errors on the account's setup?
- Is the platform and version stated, so migration rules are known?
- Is the screenshot dated and matched to the platform account?
8. Four mistakes people make
Assuming a suspension is harmless
Rockstar says characters and progress may be reset, and its impact article says they are.
Trusting “no bans”
A seller's line is not a record from Rockstar.
Ignoring BattlEye on PC
GTA Online needs it active on PC, and it is not supported on Steam Deck.
Assuming every appeal succeeds
Baseless appeals can be closed or lead to further action.
