Will GTA Online shut down after GTA 6?
We read every Rockstar Newswire post from September 2024 to 22 October 2026 and the Rockstar Support pages: none of them gives an end date for GTA Online, and no GTA Online post mentions GTA VI. The game is running a month-long Halloween event with 3X GTA$ and RP on several modes through 4 November 2026, and the July update post ends with "more action in the weeks and months ahead".
Take-Two reports GTA Online as one of its biggest earners. Its fiscal Q1 2027 results of 7 August 2026 say recurrent consumer spending for the Grand Theft Auto series grew 3 % and that "GTA+ continues to thrive", and they list the Kortz Center Heist for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The next results come on Monday 9 November 2026, ten days before GTA VI.
How Rockstar ended GTA Online last time. For PS3 and Xbox 360, Rockstar posted the end date six months ahead, on 16 June 2021, stopped Shark Card sales after 15 September 2021 and switched the servers off on 16 December 2021. Nothing like that exists for any current platform.
GTA 6 character transfer: what Rockstar has and has not said
Rockstar has said nothing about carrying a GTA Online character, rank, money, properties or vehicles into GTA VI. There is no Newswire post, Support article or Take-Two statement on it. Any site that promises a transfer is guessing.
- Said: GTA VI "is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S" (Rockstar, 24 June 2026).
- Said: digital GTA VI pre-orders include a free month of GTA+. On the GTA VI site Rockstar describes it as a GTA$500,000 monthly deposit "into your GTA Online character's bank account", plus GTA Online vehicles and the GTA+ Games Library.
- Not said: anything about an online mode for GTA VI, a GTA VI online release date or a GTA VI subscription.
- Not said: any transfer of characters, GTA$, Shark Card money, GTA+ benefits or Social Club stats from GTA V or GTA Online to GTA VI.
The GTA+ bonus is the only link Rockstar has drawn between the two games, and it points the other way: you pre-order GTA VI and get something for your GTA Online character. GTA 5 progress transfer to GTA 6: what past transfers looked like
Every transfer Rockstar has ever offered moved a GTA Online profile between versions of the same game. None moved progress into a different game. This is the full record.

Two details matter if you migrate today. Rockstar's migration article says unspent purchased GTA$ are not eligible for transfer across platforms, for example from PS4 to Xbox Series X|S, and some profiles cannot migrate at all, such as suspended or banned ones.
GTA Online on PS4 and Xbox One vs PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC
PS4 and Xbox One still get the big updates. Both A Safehouse in the Hills (10 December 2025) and The Kortz Center Heist (14 July 2026) launched on all five platforms. Some features have been limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced for years, and that list keeps growing.

On 17 June 2026 Rockstar announced that from the next day, owners of any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of GTA V can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version at no extra cost, with "easy migration" of Story Mode and Online progress. The Support article explains where to find the offer, and Rockstar has not posted an end date for it. Hao's Special Works and its upgrades are confirmed again in the September 2026 event post as PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced only.
What Take-Two has said about old-gen and current-gen support: its published results list GTA Online updates for all five platforms, most recently in August 2026. We found no Take-Two release, filing or prepared remarks that announce an end to PS4 and Xbox One support, or that promise support for a set number of years.

The pattern is consistent. GTA Online has only ever ended on a platform that was two console generations old, and Rockstar gave six months of notice. PS4 and Xbox One are one generation old and still receive every major update.

GTA Online after GTA 6: what it means for your account
- Your GTA Online progress stays where it is. Rank, GTA$, properties and vehicles live in GTA Online on your platform. Nothing official says they will appear in GTA VI.
- On PS4 or Xbox One, migrate if you can. The free upgrade and profile migration bring Hao's Special Works, Career Progress rewards and GTA+, which the old consoles do not get.
- PC and console stay separate. Rockstar does not support migration between PC and consoles in either direction.
- Watch three dates. Take-Two's results on 9 November, GTA VI pre-load on 12 November and the launch on 19 November are the most likely moments for any new statement.

Frequently asked questions
Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 comes out?
Rockstar has announced no shutdown date as of 22 October 2026. GTA Online is still updated on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and the Halloween event runs through 4 November 2026.
Can I transfer my GTA 5 character to GTA 6?
Rockstar has not announced any character, progress or money transfer from GTA V or GTA Online to GTA VI. Every past transfer moved a profile between versions of GTA Online only.
Does GTA 6 have online multiplayer?
Rockstar calls Grand Theft Auto VI "a single player experience" (24 June 2026) and has not announced an online mode for it.
Will my GTA$ and Shark Card money carry over to GTA 6?
Nothing official says so. Rockstar has not mentioned GTA$ in connection with GTA VI except the free GTA+ month for digital pre-orders, which pays GTA$500,000 into your GTA Online character's bank.
Is GTA Online still supported on PS4 and Xbox One?
Yes. The Kortz Center Heist (14 July 2026) and A Safehouse in the Hills (10 December 2025) both launched on PS4 and Xbox One. Hao's Special Works, Career Progress rewards and GTA+ are limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced.
When did GTA Online shut down on PS3 and Xbox 360?
On 16 December 2021. Rockstar announced it on 16 June 2021 and stopped Shark Card sales on those consoles after 15 September 2021.
Can I move my GTA Online progress from PS4 to PS5?
Yes. Rockstar's migration is still open from the Landing Page or Pause Menu. Your PS4 or Xbox One profile is kept but stops syncing, and unspent purchased GTA$ cannot move between PlayStation and Xbox.
