Looking for a Minecraft account?

Compare edition, capes and extras on every listing. This guide explains how to check what an account owns.

1. The 2022 bundle: two PC editions, one Microsoft account

Mojang's guide to the PC editions you own explains that Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition were released as a bundle for personal computers on 7 June 2022. Players who own this version, or who migrated from a Mojang account to a Microsoft account, should have access to both PC versions. Mojang tells you to check the Minecraft Launcher or the Microsoft Store to verify which ones you own.

That makes “which Minecraft do I have” a question about one Microsoft account, not about a computer or a screenshot.

2. Check in the Minecraft Launcher

Open the launcher

Open the Minecraft Launcher on your PC. If it is not installed, Mojang points to its download and install instructions.

Use the Microsoft account you used to buy Minecraft.

Select an edition

Choose Minecraft: Java Edition or Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on the left.

Read the button

Play or Install means you own that edition. Buy Now means you do not.

3. Check in the Microsoft Store

Open the store page

Visit the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC page in the Microsoft Store.

Use the Microsoft account you used to buy Minecraft.

Pick an edition

Choose an edition from the dropdown.

Read the label

“You Own This” and an install option show for editions you own. A Buy option shows for editions you do not.

Match the edition to the licence

Check the listing's edition against the launcher view described in this guide before you compare capes or extras.

4. When the check says something else

Situations where ownership looks different
SituationWhat Mojang says
Only the Bedrock trial opensMojang's trial mode article lists three checks: sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Minecraft, make sure a Game Pass subscription is active if you play through Game Pass, and repair the launcher on Windows.
Playing through Game PassYou need an active subscription to play Minecraft that way.
Sharing with a child accountPer Mojang's Family Share guide, digital Minecraft games can be shared with family members, including child accounts, but Java Edition cannot be family shared because it is not part of the Microsoft Store.
You thought you owned BedrockMojang suggests the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC Deluxe Edition, which gives access to both.

Two Mojang pages differ. The ownership guide has you pick an edition from a dropdown and speaks of checking PC versions in the Store, which implies Java appears there, while the Family Share guide says Java is not part of the Microsoft Store. Treat the launcher check as the one to rely on.

In the Family Share case, Mojang adds that only the account that purchased Java Edition can play it without buying it again. A child account that wants Java has to buy it directly, or you sign in to the account that owns it.

5. What a listing should show

Reading an edition claim on a listing
ClaimWhat to ask forWhat does not prove it
“Java and Bedrock”Play or Install for both editions in the launcher, with the account name visible.A text line without a screenshot.
“Java only”Play for Java and Buy Now for Bedrock.A screenshot of the Java title screen.
“Game Pass”An active subscription, which Mojang says is needed to play through Game Pass.A purchased licence for the edition.

For what the two editions mean in play, see our Java vs Bedrock guide.

6. Five questions before you buy

  1. Which edition is claimed, and does the launcher show Play or Install for it?
  2. Does the listing show the account name next to the edition?
  3. Was the account migrated from a Mojang account, and is that stated?
  4. Is the access a purchase or a Game Pass subscription?
  5. Are capes and extras shown separately from the licence?

7. Four mistakes people make

Checking the wrong account

The launcher shows ownership for the account you are signed in with.

Treating Game Pass as ownership

Mojang says an active subscription is needed to play.

Expecting Family Share to cover Java

Java Edition cannot be family shared.

Trusting a title-screen photo

The Play or Buy Now button is the check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check which Minecraft editions I own on PC?

Sign in to the Minecraft Launcher with the Microsoft account that bought the game and select each edition. Play or Install means you own it, and Buy Now means you do not.

Do I get Java and Bedrock together?

Mojang says the editions were released as a bundle for PC on 7 June 2022, and that players who own the bundle or migrated from a Mojang account should have access to both.

Where else can I verify ownership?

In the Microsoft Store, on the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC page. Editions you own show “You Own This”.

Can I family share Minecraft: Java Edition?

No. Mojang says Java Edition cannot be family shared because it is not part of the Microsoft Store.

Why does Bedrock only open as a trial?

Mojang lists three things to check: the Microsoft account you signed in with, an active Game Pass subscription if you play that way, and a launcher repair.

Does Game Pass mean I own Minecraft?

Mojang says you need an active Game Pass subscription to play Minecraft through it. That is access while subscribed, and the page does not describe it as a purchase.

Mojang says buying or selling accounts goes against its Terms of Service, that it cannot provide support for licenses bought from resellers or third-party sites, and that buying from a third-party seller does not make you the legitimate owner of a Minecraft license or account. The Microsoft Services Agreement restricts transferring account credentials. A check does not override those terms.
