Minecraft Capes: Which Exist, Which You Can Still Get, and How to Check One
A long Minecraft cape list looks impressive until you learn that some of the most common capes were free to every player. Sort capes into free, closed and scarce, and a count becomes useful.

Looking for a Minecraft account?
Compare Java and Bedrock editions, capes and Hypixel progress on every listing. This guide shows which capes actually matter.
1. Why a cape count misleads
Minecraft capes are cosmetic items that attach to a Minecraft profile and show on the player's back. They cannot be moved between accounts. Mojang now hands many of them out through short promotions, such as watching a livestream. Two of the most common ones cost nothing: according to the Minecraft Wiki, every Java player has received the Pan cape by default since 8 May 2025, and Mojang's sign-in promotion terms gave the sign-in cape, known as the Common cape, to anyone who logged in to Bedrock with a Microsoft account until 5 May 2026, while supplies lasted.
So a listing that says “three capes” may include two that every player could get. Sort the capes into four groups before you compare accounts.
Only the last group says something about how few players ever held a cape. The rest tells you which promotions an account happened to take part in.
2. The capes on real accounts, and which are still open
The table covers the capes you are most likely to see on an account listing. “Open today” means the cape could be earned on 12 October 2026.
| Cape | How it was earned | Open today? |
|---|---|---|
| Pan | Free for every player | Yes, automatically |
| Common | Logging in to Bedrock with a Microsoft account | No, closed 5 May 2026 |
| Migrator | Moving an old Mojang account to Microsoft | No, migration ended in 2023 |
| 15th Anniversary | Claim button during the 2024 anniversary | No |
| Vanilla | Owning both PC editions before 6 June 2022 | No |
| Home | Streaming promotion, 2025 | No |
| Menace | Streaming promotion, 2025 | No |
| Purple Heart | Streaming promotion, 2024 | No |
| Aurora | Watching Minecraft Dungeons II launch streams, 29 September to 14 October 2026 | Watching window ends 14 October 2026, codes redeemable until 31 October 2026 |
| Builder | Watching streams, 30 May to 14 June 2026 | No |
| Copper | Promotion quest, autumn 2025 | No |
| Cherry Blossom | Voting in the 2023 Mob Vote, or its event server | No |
| Follower's | Streaming promotion, 2024 | No |
| Hero | Playing Minecraft Dungeons, logging in to Dungeons II, then logging in to Minecraft | Yes, until 31 December 2026 |
| Yearn | Event promotion, 2025 | No |
| Mojang Office | December 2024 event | No |
| Zombie Horse | Spear Mayhem event, December 2025 | No |
| Founder's | 2019 Bedrock offer, copied to Java in 2025 | No |
| MCC 15th Year | Event server, 2024 | No |
| Twisted | Minecraft Dungeons II pre-order bonus | Not for new orders; unredeemed pre-orders can still claim it |
| Minecraft Experience | Ticket to an in-person Minecraft Experience event | Only with a ticket |
The Common, Vanilla, Hero, Twisted, Builder and Aurora rows come from Mojang's own pages for the sign-in promotion, the Vanilla cape, the Dungeons II capes and the Builder cape. The remaining origins come from the community Minecraft Wiki. Names can differ by edition: the Cherry Blossom cape is called Cherry on Bedrock.
The scarce capes are not in this table. The capes that very few players ever had are the MINECON capes from physical events, and the staff, translator and volunteer capes such as Mojang, Mojira Moderator and Translator. If a listing claims one of them, ask for proof in an unmodified launcher.
3. What can still be earned, and how quickly that changes
Most capes now come from short promotions. The Hero cape is an example of an open one: play Minecraft Dungeons, log in to Dungeons II before the end of 2026, and then log in to Minecraft with the same Microsoft account. The Aurora watching window lasted about two weeks, with codes redeemable for a little longer. A cape that is open today can be closed next month, which is why a statement such as “cannot be obtained any more” needs a date.
Officially, closed means closed. The community wiki notes that Mojang has been lax with the deadlines of some 2024 and later capes, but do not count on it. Be careful in both directions: do not assume a closed cape is gone for good, and do not assume a seller can supply one. Promotion codes are non-transferable under Mojang's terms, so an offer to sell “a cape code” is a red flag.
See which capes a listing really has
Listings name the capes on each account. Compare them with the table above before you decide.
4. How to check a cape properly
A screenshot cannot show whether a cape is real. A short live check can. Ask the seller to show the following, and repeat it yourself as soon as you have access to the account.
- The official Minecraft Launcher with a vanilla profile: no mods and no third-party client.
- On Java, the Skins screen with the cape selected. Mojang's help article describes the steps: highlight the skin, open the menu, choose Edit, pick the cape and select Save & Use. On Bedrock, the capes are in the Dressing Room.
- A world with the cape equipped, seen from behind (press F5 on Java).
- The cape's name, compared with the table above, plus the edition and the date of the check.
Do not treat a listing on a community site as proof. According to the community wiki, sites such as NameMC only see a cape that was equipped when the name was looked up, owners can hide capes, and the counts they show are minimum values. They are useful for context, not for ownership.
5. Capes that are not official
Some capes you will see in a screenshot are not Mojang capes at all. OptiFine, LabyMod, Lunar and other clients or mods add their own capes, which are visible only to people running the same mod. A cape that renders in a modded client says nothing about the Microsoft account behind it. That is why step 1 of the check above uses an unmodified profile.
6. Four mistakes that cost money
Paying for the cape count
Pan is free and Common is closed. Count only what is scarce.
Assuming old means rare
Migrator is old, but every Java player who migrated received it. Rarity comes from how few people could ever get a cape.
Trusting screenshots and counters
Mod capes only render in a mod, and third-party sites only show what was equipped.
Buying “a cape” separately
Capes belong to one account. They cannot be moved, and codes are non-transferable.
The Minecraft account category names the capes on each listing, so you can compare them with the table above. To decide which edition you need first, read our Java vs Bedrock guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Pan cape rare?
No. Java players have received it by default since 8 May 2025, and Bedrock players have had it for longer. It is a free cape and says nothing about an account's age.
Can I still get the Common cape?
Officially, no. Mojang's promotion terms set 5 May 2026 as the redemption deadline, with limited supplies on a first-come basis, and we found no extension. A cape that is already on an account is not affected by the deadline.
Does the Migrator cape mean the account is old?
It means the account was moved from Mojang to Microsoft before the migration ended in 2023. Every Java player who migrated received it, so it says little about rarity.
Can a cape be moved to another account?
No. Capes belong to a Minecraft profile. Promotion codes are non-transferable under Mojang's terms, so be sceptical of anyone offering them separately.
Do capes work on both Java and Bedrock?
The 2025 and 2026 promotion capes are available in both editions, but some older ones are not. The Migrator and MINECON capes are Java only, so check the edition you plan to play.
Is an OptiFine cape an official cape?
No. It is a mod cape, visible to people running the same mod, and it does not appear in the official launcher's cape list.

Sources and editorial scope
Reviewed on 12 October 2026 against Mojang's pages for the sign-in promotion, Vanilla cape, Dungeons II capes and Builder cape, and the community Minecraft Wiki for older origins. The sorting method and the check are ALVIRAN editorial advice.
Mojang says buying or selling accounts breaks its terms, and the Microsoft Services Agreement restricts transferring account credentials. A cape check does not override those terms or establish that an account transfer is authorised.
