Looking for a Minecraft account?
Compare edition, capes and extras on every listing. This guide explains what Minecoins are and where they work.
1. What Minecoins are
Mojang's Minecoins for Nintendo article calls Minecoins Minecraft's virtual currency, used to purchase additional content from the Minecraft Marketplace. The Marketplace access guide describes the Marketplace as an in-game store where you can purchase and download special content for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition or Legends.
Mojang's own Marketplace overview from June 2023 calls the Marketplace a library of content from community creator partners for gameplay on Bedrock Edition. None of these articles describes the Marketplace for Java Edition.
2. Three routes Mojang documents
| Route | How it works | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| In the Marketplace | Launch Bedrock Edition, sign in on the title screen, select Marketplace, press the plus button next to your balance and pick a Minecoin package. | A Microsoft account |
| On Minecraft.net | Go to the Minecoin purchase page, sign in, pick a pack, check the payment method and buy. You may need to restart the game to see the new balance. | A Microsoft account is required |
| With a prepaid card | Redeem the 25-digit code on the redeem page of your Microsoft account or on Minecraft.net, then check the balance in the Marketplace. | A prepaid card code |
Sources: Buy Minecoins in the Marketplace and Buy Minecoins on Minecraft.net. Mojang adds that if you play Bedrock or Legends, Minecoins you buy carry over between those games when you sign in with the Microsoft account you used to buy them.
3. Why a balance can look missing
Mojang's missing Minecoins article says that if you bought Minecoins but they do not appear in the Marketplace, you should contact the support team of the store where you bought them. It also notes that Minecoins only show in the Marketplace if you are signed in to the same Microsoft account you used for the purchase.
The redemption limit error is a separate case. When you redeem two codes for the same amount of Minecoins in a row, you may see a “you already own this product” error. Mojang's fix is to redeem the first code, open the Marketplace and check the balance, and then redeem the second code.
A balance is not an edition
Minecoins buy Marketplace content for Bedrock or Legends. Check the edition on a listing before you look at anything on top of it.
4. PlayStation Tokens are not Minecoins
According to Mojang's Minecraft Tokens article, Tokens are a digital currency bought with real money for the Minecraft Store on PlayStation, and they can only be used on PlayStation. Tokens cannot be converted into Minecoins or the other way round.
Content is a little more flexible than the currency. Non-exclusive content bought in the Marketplace on other platforms can be used on PlayStation, and non-exclusive content bought in the PlayStation store is usable on other Bedrock platforms. Mojang says your Minecoins must be used on other Bedrock platforms; on PlayStation the currency is Tokens.
5. The Nintendo wallet change from 27 October 2026
| Wallet | What goes in | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy Wallet | Minecoins owned before 27 October 2026 | Stays available across compatible platforms, does not expire, and is spent first on a Nintendo purchase. Mojang adds that later charges on other supported platforms go to that platform's wallet and are shared where allowed. |
| Nintendo Wallet | Minecoins bought on a Nintendo device after Minecraft launches there, from 27 October 2026 | Usable only on Nintendo systems. You can refill it at any time. |
On a Nintendo device, Mojang's example with 1,000 Minecoins in the Legacy Wallet and 500 bought there later shows a balance of 1,500, and purchases first use the 1,000. Mojang says you will not lose Minecoins you already own.
Dated information. The Nintendo article was written ahead of 27 October 2026. After that date, read the current page before you rely on the wallet rules.
6. What it means when you compare accounts
| Detail | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| A Minecoin balance | Currency on a Microsoft account on the day of the screenshot. | Which editions the account owns. |
| Marketplace content | That purchases were made for Bedrock or Legends. | Whether the content is exclusive to a platform. |
| Where the Minecoins were bought | Whether a Nintendo wallet rule may apply. | How the balance is split between wallets. |
Our Java vs Bedrock guide explains why the edition matters first.
7. Five questions before you buy
- Which edition does the listing offer, and does it include Bedrock?
- Which Microsoft account holds the Minecoins and the content?
- Was anything bought on a Nintendo device, and when?
- Is the balance shown inside the Marketplace with the account name visible?
- Does the listing treat Minecoins and licences as separate facts?
8. Four mistakes people make
Assuming Minecoins work on Java
Mojang's pages describe the Marketplace for Bedrock Edition and Legends, not Java.
Mixing up Tokens and Minecoins
PlayStation Tokens cannot be converted into Minecoins.
Signing in with the wrong account
Minecoins only appear for the account that bought them.
Redeeming codes back to back
Check the balance between two codes of the same value.

Mojang says buying or selling accounts goes against its Terms of Service, that it cannot provide support for licenses bought from resellers or third-party sites, and that buying from a third-party seller does not make you the legitimate owner of a Minecraft license or account. The Microsoft Services Agreement restricts transferring account credentials. A check does not override those terms.
