Minecraft updates 2026: every game drop released so far

Mojang releases Minecraft's content updates as "game drops", several a year. Each 2026 drop came out on Java and Bedrock on the same day and is free for everyone who owns the game. Release dates below are from Mojang's Java version manifest and its launch articles.

Mojang called Wilderness Bound "our third game drop of 2026" in its launch post, and its testing hub of 30 September calls the next one "the final game drop of 2026". That makes four drops this year.

Minecraft next update: Ice Caves, the last game drop of 2026

Mojang showed the drop at Minecraft LIVE on 26 September 2026 and opened testing four days later. It has no official name yet; Mojang's own posts call it the upcoming or final game drop of 2026, and the snapshot notes point feedback to a page labelled "gamedrop_winter26". Here is what has been added to the test builds so far.

• Frostbite: a zombie variant. Its hits apply the new Freezing effect, some throw Ice Balls, and Zombies and Husks stuck in Powder Snow turn into Frostbites. It can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it.
• Icicles hang from cave ceilings, grow up to five blocks long and deal damage when they fall. Ice Crystals grow on the floor and give off light.
• Freezing also comes as potions and arrows, so you can turn the effect against mobs.
• Jukebox Playlists are not ice-themed but ship with this drop: discs in a chest above a jukebox play in slot order and loop.

On Java the drop is being tested as 26.4, so the release will most likely be Java 26.4, the next number in the year-based scheme. Mojang has not stated the Bedrock version; the previews moved from 26.60 to 26.70 during testing.

Minecraft Ice Caves release date: what Mojang has said

We checked the testing hub, the LIVE recap, every 26.4 snapshot note and the Bedrock preview notes for "December", "winter", "holiday" and "later this year". None of them gives a date or a month. The only firm statement is that this is the final drop of 2026, which places the release before the end of the year. Dates you see on other sites, such as "mid-December", are estimates.

What Mojang has done before is announce each date about two weeks out, in a short post on minecraft.net. Last year's final drop came out on 9 December 2025.

Minecraft 1.22 and the new version numbers

There is no Minecraft 1.22 and there will not be one. On 2 December 2025 Mojang announced that "version numbers in the year 2026 will begin with '26'", so that creators and modders can tell which version is a game drop. The last 1.x release was Java 1.21.11 (Mounts of Mayhem) on 9 December 2025, and the first build under the new scheme was 26.1 Snapshot 1 on 16 December 2025.

On Java the second number counts the drops of the year: 26.1 is the first drop of 2026 and 26.3 the third. Snapshots changed name too, from the old "25w41a" style to "26.4 Snapshot 5". Bedrock numbers rise in steps of ten and include releases between drops, so they do not line up one to one with Java.

Minecraft LIVE 2026: everything announced

Mojang held two main Minecraft LIVE shows in 2026, in March and September, plus a Minecraft LIVE at TwitchCon Europe in Rotterdam. None of the three recaps mentions a mob vote.

The Sift is the big one for the base game. Mojang says it is coming to Minecraft Java and Bedrock "next year", meaning 2027, as "the first new dimension in over 14 years", joining the Overworld, the Nether and the End. You can already visit it in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launched on 29 September 2026. Mojang has not given a 2027 date or said which drop will carry it.

The September show also launched the Camp Out community challenge around Wilderness Bound's blocks: 50 million straw beds and 200 million cushions placed across the Overworld.

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2: 27 October 2026

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on 27 October 2026, with pre-orders open since 7 October. All versions include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals, which Mojang notes is not available in some modes such as split-screen.

• Free upgrade: if you own a digital copy of Minecraft for the original Switch, you can get the digital Standard Edition for Switch 2 free until the end of January 2027 in most regions. Japan, Taiwan and Thailand pay 100 JPY, 30 NTD and 25 THB.
• Discounted step-up: the same Switch owners can upgrade to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection at a discount, through the Nintendo eShop only, for a limited time.
• Minecoins stay on Nintendo: Minecoins included or bought on a Nintendo device must be used in the Nintendo ecosystem.

Mojang says buying or selling accounts goes against its Terms of Service, that it cannot provide support for licenses bought from resellers or third-party sites, and that buying from a third-party seller does not make you the legitimate owner of a Minecraft license or account. The Microsoft Services Agreement restricts transferring account credentials. A check does not override those terms.
