Minecraft enchantments list: all 43 with max level and items
Since 1.21 every Java enchantment is a data file inside the game. We read all 43 files and the enchantment tags of the Java 26.3 game data, so the max levels, items and conflicts below are the game's own values, not a guess. "Table items" can get the enchantment from an enchanting table. "Anvil only" items can carry it, but only from an enchanted book in an anvil.

Two names are newer than most guides. Tricky Trials (1.21) added Density, Breach and Wind Burst for the mace in June 2024. Mounts of Mayhem (1.21.11) added spears in December 2025, which take every sword enchantment except Sweeping Edge, plus the new Lunge. The three 2026 drops (26.1, 26.2, 26.3) added no new enchantment. For the dates of every update, see every Minecraft version in order.
Max enchantment levels in Minecraft
The max level is the highest level you can reach in survival, from a table, a book, a trade or an anvil. Commands such as /give can go up to level 255, but many effects stop scaling long before that, and those items are not part of normal play.
| Max level | Count | Enchantments |
|---|---|---|
| V | 7 | Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Efficiency, Power, Impaling, Density |
| IV | 7 | Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection, Feather Falling, Piercing, Breach |
| III | 16 | Unbreaking, Fortune, Looting, Sweeping Edge, Respiration, Depth Strider, Thorns, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Lure, Luck of the Sea, Loyalty, Riptide, Quick Charge, Lunge, Wind Burst |
| II | 4 | Fire Aspect, Knockback, Punch, Frost Walker |
| I | 9 | Mending, Silk Touch, Infinity, Flame, Multishot, Channeling, Aqua Affinity, Curse of Binding, Curse of Vanishing |
There is no "Sharpness X", "Protection V" or "Efficiency X" in survival. Anvils stop at the max level: two Sharpness V books do not make Sharpness VI. If you see higher levels on a server, they came from commands or plugins.
Why your table never shows Sharpness V. A level 30 table cannot reach the top level of every enchantment. On a diamond sword or a book, the hidden enchantment value tops out at 40, and Sharpness V needs 45, Efficiency V and Power V need 41. These levels come from combining two IV books in an anvil or from a librarian. Protection IV (34), Unbreaking III (21), Fortune III and Looting III (both 33) are all reachable at level 30.
Minecraft enchantment incompatible list: which ones conflict
Each enchantment can name an "exclusive set" in the game data. If either enchantment lists the other, they can never sit on the same item in survival. The table will not roll both, and an anvil drops the conflicting enchantment from the sacrificed item in Java (Bedrock shows a red X and refuses).
| Group | Pick only one of | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Damage | Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Density, Breach (and Impaling, books only) | Swords, spears, axes, mace |
| Armor | Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection | Every armor piece |
| Mining | Fortune, Silk Touch | Pickaxe, shovel, axe, hoe |
| Boots | Depth Strider, Frost Walker | Boots |
| Bow | Infinity, Mending | Bow |
| Crossbow | Multishot, Piercing | Crossbow |
| Trident | Riptide, or Loyalty and Channeling (those two work together) | Trident |
The mace is the one that confuses people. Density and Breach exclude each other, and both exclude Smite and Bane of Arthropods, so a mace gets one damage enchantment out of four. Wind Burst, Fire Aspect, Unbreaking and Mending have no conflicts and fit on top. On the trident, Loyalty and Channeling are a pair, and Riptide replaces both. Impaling is listed in the damage set, but no item can take both Impaling and Sharpness, so the conflict only shows when you try to merge two books.

Treasure enchantments: the 7 you cannot get from a table
The game's treasure tag holds seven enchantments. They never appear in an enchanting table, on mob gear or on enchanted items sold by villagers. Four of them can still come from librarians and fishing. Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst cannot: each one is tied to a single structure or mechanic. The chances below are our calculation from the Java 26.3 loot tables.
| Enchantment | Max | Main sources | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mending | I | Librarian trades, fishing treasure, most structure chests | Librarians are the reliable source; reroll a new librarian until it offers Mending |
| Frost Walker | II | Librarians, fishing, jungle temple and stronghold chests | Same as Mending: a librarian is fastest |
| Curse of Binding | I | Chest loot, fishing, librarians | Usually an unwanted extra on loot |
| Curse of Vanishing | I | Chest loot, fishing, librarians | Usually an unwanted extra on loot |
| Soul Speed | III | Bastion remnant chests, piglin bartering, piglin golden boots | 11.2% book per generic bastion chest; 2.8% per barter (book or iron boots) |
| Swift Sneak | III | Ancient city chests only | About 23.7% per chest for at least one book, any level |
| Wind Burst | III | Ominous vaults in trial chambers only | 5.5% per ominous vault, always level I |
Wind Burst is the slowest to max out. Mojang's 1.21 changelog says "only Wind Burst I can be found", so Wind Burst III takes four level I books: two pairs make two level II books, and those make III. Swift Sneak counts as non-renewable, because ancient city chests do not refill. The Heavy Core you need to craft the mace in the first place also comes from ominous vaults; our rarest Minecraft items guide has the full ominous vault odds.
Best Minecraft enchantments for every item
These are the end-game sets most players aim for, using only what survival allows. Where two enchantments conflict, the table shows both options and when to pick each. Unbreaking III and Mending go on nearly everything, because together they make gear last as long as you keep collecting experience.
| Item | Best enchantments | Choice to make |
|---|---|---|
| Sword | Sharpness V, Looting III, Fire Aspect II, Sweeping Edge III (Java), Unbreaking III, Mending | Smite V for undead farms; skip Knockback if mobs fly out of reach |
| Spear | Sharpness V, Lunge III, Looting III, Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, Mending | Knockback II is optional |
| Mace | Wind Burst III, Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, Mending, plus one damage enchantment | Density V for big falls, Breach IV against armored players |
| Axe | Efficiency V, Sharpness V, Unbreaking III, Mending, plus Fortune III or Silk Touch | Silk Touch to collect melons and mushroom blocks whole, Fortune III for more melon slices |
| Pickaxe | Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Mending, plus Fortune III or Silk Touch | Keep two pickaxes: Fortune for ores, Silk Touch for glass, ice and ore blocks |
| Shovel and hoe | Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Mending, plus Fortune III or Silk Touch | Fortune on a hoe helps crops and leaves; Silk Touch on a shovel keeps grass and mycelium |
| Bow | Power V, Punch II, Flame, Unbreaking III, plus Infinity or Mending | Infinity saves arrows, Mending saves the bow |
| Crossbow | Quick Charge III, Unbreaking III, Mending, plus Multishot or Piercing IV | Multishot for groups and fireworks, Piercing for lines of mobs and arrow recovery |
| Trident | Impaling V, Unbreaking III, Mending, plus Loyalty III and Channeling, or Riptide III | Loyalty for a throwing weapon, Riptide for fast travel in rain |
| Helmet | Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Unbreaking III, Mending | Thorns III if you accept faster wear |
| Chestplate | Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending | Thorns III; Blast Protection IV for raids and creepers |
| Leggings | Protection IV, Swift Sneak III, Unbreaking III, Mending | Swift Sneak only comes from ancient cities |
| Boots | Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Soul Speed III, Unbreaking III, Mending, plus Depth Strider III or Frost Walker II | Depth Strider for oceans, Frost Walker for walking on water |
| Fishing rod | Luck of the Sea III, Lure III, Unbreaking III, Mending | None |
| Elytra, shield, shears | Unbreaking III, Mending (shears also Efficiency V) | Never put Curse of Binding on an elytra |
Protection IV beats the special protections for daily use because it covers almost every damage type. Four pieces give 64% reduction, and all protection enchantments together are capped at 80%. The common pro setup is three pieces of Protection IV and one piece of Blast Protection IV, which still reaches the 80% cap against explosions.
How to get level 30 enchantments: 15 bookshelves
An enchanting table offers three options. The bottom one gets stronger with nearby bookshelves, and the effect stops at 15. With 15 bookshelves the bottom slot always shows exactly 30 levels.
- Place the table on the floor with free space around it.
- Leave a one-block gap. Each bookshelf must sit exactly two blocks from the table, at the same height or one block higher. In Java the block in the gap must be air or another replaceable block such as a snow layer or short grass; a torch or carpet there blocks the shelf. Bedrock needs air at table height and one block above.
- Build a 5 by 5 ring. The ring two blocks out has 16 spots. Fill 15 and leave one open as a door, or stack shelves two high on fewer spots. Only plain bookshelves count; chiseled bookshelves do not.
- Enchant books, not only gear. The table only works on items that are not enchanted yet. Enchanting books at level 30 and then applying them in an anvil lets you pick the item later.
- Reroll for free. The offers stay the same until you enchant something. Enchanting a cheap item, such as a book at level 1, changes the seed and gives new offers.
You need at least 30 levels to click the bottom slot, but it only takes 3 levels and 3 lapis lazuli. Going from level 30 to 27 costs far less experience than earning levels 0 to 3 again, so it is cheaper to enchant at high levels. Gold has the highest enchantability (25 for armor, 22 for tools), netherite has 15, and diamond only 10, which is why gold gear rolls more extra enchantments.
Anvil "Too Expensive": the 39-level limit
In survival and adventure mode an anvil only accepts jobs that cost 39 levels or less. At 40 or more, it shows "Too Expensive!" and refuses, no matter how many levels you have. Only Creative mode ignores it. The limit is the same in Java and Bedrock.
The cost grows because of the prior work penalty. Every anvil use, except a plain rename, adds to the penalty of the result, and the penalty roughly doubles each time. Mojang's own anvil column puts it simply: the more times you rework an item, the more expensive it gets.
| Times used in an anvil | Penalty added to the next job |
|---|---|
| 0 | 0 levels |
| 1 | 1 level |
| 2 | 3 levels |
| 3 | 7 levels |
| 4 | 15 levels |
| 5 | 31 levels |
On top of the penalties of both items, Java charges each enchantment's final level times a cost multiplier. The multiplier is lower when the enchantment comes from a book (half the item value, at least 1), which is why books are the cheap way to enchant.
| Multiplier | Enchantments |
|---|---|
| 1 | Protection, Sharpness, Efficiency, Power, Piercing |
| 2 | Fire Protection, Feather Falling, Projectile Protection, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Knockback, Unbreaking, Loyalty, Quick Charge, Density, Lunge |
| 4 | Blast Protection, Respiration, Aqua Affinity, Depth Strider, Frost Walker, Fire Aspect, Looting, Sweeping Edge, Fortune, Punch, Flame, Luck of the Sea, Lure, Mending, Impaling, Riptide, Multishot, Breach, Wind Burst |
| 8 | Thorns, Silk Touch, Infinity, Channeling, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Curse of Binding, Curse of Vanishing |
How to avoid Too Expensive
- Merge books first. Combine books with each other in pairs, then pairs of pairs, and put the finished book on the item last. That keeps the number of anvil uses on the item low.
- Put expensive enchantments on early. Mending, Silk Touch and Thorns cost the most per level, so add them while the item still has a low penalty.
- Repair with Mending, not the anvil. Each anvil repair adds penalty. Once an item has Mending, let experience orbs fix it.
- Rename during another job. Renaming costs 1 level plus the penalty, so do it while you add a book.
- Reset with a grindstone only as a last step. A grindstone clears the penalty, but it also removes every enchantment except curses.
Bedrock counts differently: it only charges for the levels an enchantment actually gains, not the final level, so the same merge is often cheaper there.
Java vs Bedrock enchantments: what is different
Both editions share the same enchantment names and max levels, with one missing on Bedrock. The rules around them differ more than most players expect. Bedrock values come from minecraft.wiki and apply to Bedrock 26.63.
| Topic | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Number of enchantments | 43 | 42, no Sweeping Edge |
| Sharpness damage | +1 at I to +3 at V | +1, +2, +3, +5, +6 |
| Smite, Bane, Impaling | +2.5 per level | +2.5 per level, rounded down |
| Impaling targets | Aquatic mobs | Any mob in water or rain |
| Axe damage enchantments | Anvil only | Also from the enchanting table |
| Mace Smite, Bane, Fire Aspect | Anvil only | Also from the enchanting table |
| Thorns from the table | Chestplate only | Any armor piece |
| Silk Touch on shears | No | Yes, by anvil |
| Anvil enchantment cost | Final level times multiplier | Only the levels gained times multiplier |
| Conflicting book in an anvil | Allowed; the conflicting enchantment is lost | Refused with a red X |
| Mending and Frost Walker from raids | No | Yes, as raid drops |
| "Too Expensive!" limit | 40 levels and up | 40 levels and up |
If you play on both editions, the biggest practical change is the sword. A Bedrock Sharpness V sword hits much harder than a Java one, and Bedrock has no sweep attack to enchant. Our Minecraft updates 2026 page tracks what each drop changed on both editions.
Frequently asked questions
How many enchantments are in Minecraft?
Java Edition 26.3 has 43 enchantments. Bedrock has 42, because Sweeping Edge exists only in Java. Lunge, added for spears in December 2025, is the newest.
What is the max enchantment level in Minecraft?
Level V, reached by seven enchantments: Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Efficiency, Power, Impaling and Density. Higher levels, up to 255, only exist through commands.
What are the best enchantments in Minecraft?
Mending and Unbreaking III, because they go on almost every item and keep it alive for good. After that, Sharpness V for weapons, Efficiency V and Fortune III for tools, and Protection IV for armor.
Which Minecraft enchantments are incompatible?
Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Density and Breach; the four Protection types; Fortune and Silk Touch; Depth Strider and Frost Walker; Infinity and Mending; Multishot and Piercing; and Riptide with Loyalty or Channeling.
Can you put Mending and Infinity on the same bow?
No. They are mutually exclusive in survival on both editions. Pick Infinity to save arrows or Mending to keep the bow repaired.
How many bookshelves do you need for level 30 enchantments?
15. Each one must be two blocks from the table, at table height or one block above, with air in between. More than 15 does nothing.
Why does my anvil say Too Expensive?
The job would cost 40 levels or more, and survival anvils stop at 39. It happens when an item has been used in an anvil many times, because the prior work penalty doubles with each use.
Can you get Mending from an enchanting table?
No. Mending is a treasure enchantment. Get it from a librarian villager, from fishing or from structure chests, then add the book in an anvil.
