LoL Skin Rarity Explained: From Epic to Exalted, and Skins You Can't Buy Anymore

Two League of Legends accounts can both list 120 skins and hold completely different collections. Learn the skin tiers, the Legacy rules and the reward-only skins once, and any skin list becomes readable in minutes.

120 skins is a number. Tiers are the story. TIERS, LEGACY, REWARD-ONLY

1. The tier ladder, from Epic to Exalted

A skin's tier describes how much was built for it: a new model, new effects, new voice lines. Riot's price-tier page lists 3,250 RP for Ultimate, 1,820 RP for Legendary and 1,350 RP for Epic. That page is for Southeast Asia, so check the store of your own server before you rely on a price. Below Epic sit cheaper tiers that Riot and the community name inconsistently: the same page lists Standard at 975 RP and Deluxe at 750 RP, and the community wiki adds Budget and Timeworn at 520 RP.

The tiers you will see on a skin list
Tier How it is obtained What it tells a buyer
Lower tiers (Standard, Deluxe, Budget, Timeworn) RP in the store, roughly 520 to 975 RP. Many older ones are Legacy. Lighter changes than Epic. They are cheap to collect, so they pad a total quickly.
Epic 1,350 RP in the store, or loot. The workhorse tier. About half of all skins are Epic (see the counts in section 2).
Legendary 1,820 RP in the store, or loot. A fuller redesign. Roughly one skin in fifteen is Legendary (section 2).
Ultimate 3,250 RP in the store. The smallest regular store tier: seven skins in the section 2 counts. Evolving forms and extra content.
Mythic and Prestige Mythic Essence in the Mythic Shop, usually not RP. Some Mythic skins are event rewards, and the Battle Pass Prestige skin comes from the paid pass. Rotation, not a fixed price. Prestige skins return to the shop after at least a year, for 125 to 200 Mythic Essence depending on how often they were unvaulted.
Mythic Variant Sanctum pulls only. One is guaranteed by the 40th draw. Not sold for RP. Treat it as a draw-based reward.
Exalted Sanctum pulls only. One is guaranteed by the 80th draw, at 400 RP per Ancient Spark. At most 32,000 RP to guarantee one (80 × 400, our arithmetic). Riot has re-run Exalted skins, so “never again” is not a safe assumption.
Transcendent Sold directly for RP during Hall of Legends events. Collector's-edition style. Riot says they are not planned to return.

The tier sources are Riot's Skins 101 article, the Sanctum guide and the Mythic content overhaul. Exalted skins have already re-run: Arcane Fractured Jinx came back in the Sanctum for patch 25.23.

Official words and data labels are not the same. League's client data stores eight rarity values, and they do not line up neatly with Riot's marketing terms. “Rare”, for example, is a technical label that covers ranked rewards such as Victorious and a few Arcane skins. If a third-party site shows “Rare” next to a skin, it is not a tier you can shop for.

2. Why the total misleads: how common each tier is

“Number of skins” has no official definition. Client data puts cheap tier skins, Epics and reward skins into one list, so the same total can describe very different collections. The tier counts show why. We counted every skin in ALVIRAN's catalogue, built from Riot's client data (client version 16.20) with chromas and base skins left out.

Skins in the catalogue by tier label (1,954 skins)
Tier Skins Share
Lower tiers (no rarity label in the data)62532%
Epic99951%
Legendary1276%
Mythic (Prestige, Mythic Shop, Hextech and event skins)1699%
Rare (a technical label for Victorious and a few Arcane skins)191%
Ultimate7under 1%
Exalted5under 1%
Transcendent3under 1%
Skins in the catalogue1,954
Share that are Epic51% (999 skins)
Ultimate, Exalted and Transcendent together15 skins (under 1%)
Mythic-tier skins169 (9%)

Half of all League skins are Epic, and fewer than one in a hundred sits in the three top tiers. So a collection of 120 skins can be mostly Epic and lower-tier skins, or it can hold a handful of Exalted, Transcendent and Prestige skins that are worth far more than the rest. The total cannot tell these apart. The tier of each skin can. Counts follow Riot's client data and move with each patch.

How our covers use this ladder. The cover image of a League listing shows up to three skins. It ranks them by tier, lifts Prestige skins and tournament or ranked rewards, and prefers three different champions. Standard skins and chromas are never shown.

3. Skins you cannot simply buy

Some of the most meaningful skins on a list were never in the store, or are not there any more. Each of these needs its own question.

Reward and event skins, and where they stand today
Group How it was earned Available today?
Victorious 15 ranked wins in one season, in Solo/Duo or Flex, at Honor level 3. Awarded after the season ends. Only for the season in question. Riot does not plan to bring them back.
Championship and Worlds skins Released around the tournament. Worlds 2026 offers 2013 to 2024 Championship skins through a mystery pool: a chance via the Battle Pass or 850 RP per mystery item. It is luck, not a choice.
Prestige skins Prestige Points, which Riot retired. Returns through the Mythic Shop after at least a year. Owning one does not prove it was bought in the first window.
Exalted and Mythic Variants Sanctum draws. Only while a banner is running.
Achievement and collector's skins Old promotions and challenges. No. Riot has no plans to make achievement skins available again.
Honor skins Honor Tokens, which Riot retired in 2025. Unowned Honor skins are granted automatically at Honor level 5.

The Victorious and Honor rules are explained in Skins 101, the ranked reward schedule in Riot's ranked rewards guide and the Worlds 2026 pool on the event page.

Compare the skins you actually want

Use the skin and champion filters in the shop, then check the named skins on each listing against the tiers above.

4. “Legacy” does not mean “never again”

Riot's Legacy and Limited guide separates two groups that are easy to confuse. Legacy skins are usually not sold directly, but they sometimes return in bundles or event sales, and most Legacy skins above 520 RP can be reached through Mystery Gifting and Hextech Crafting. Limited skins were sold only during an event and are gone; achievement-limited skins cannot be bought at all.

The recent patch notes show how often Legacy skins come back:

  • Patch 26.4: the Petals of Spring skins, except Lillia's, were released as limited-time Legacy skins and go into the vault from patch 26.6.
  • Patch 25.17: five Doom Bots skins left the vault for direct sale until the end of patch 25.20, and Xin Zhao's skins were unvaulted through patch 25.18.
  • Patch 25.23: the Winter Legacy skins became available again until the winter event ended, and all Arcane Season 1 and 2 skins returned.

For a buyer, “Legacy” is a statement about today's store, not a promise of scarcity. If a listing adds a premium because a skin is “gone forever”, check whether it is Legacy (it may return) or Limited and achievement-based (Riot has no plans to bring it back).

5. Chromas, shards and Classic items are not skins

Three kinds of entries inflate a count without being a separate skin. A chroma is a recolour with its own collection tab, and names such as “Ruby” or “Catseye” are chromas, not additional skins. A skin shard sits in the Loot tab until it is redeemed with Orange Essence, so a shard is not an owned skin. And the League Classic mode has Classic-only chromas and portraits that cannot be used in standard League.

Ask one precise question before you compare totals: does the number include chromas, shards or Classic items?

6. A ten-minute skin audit

Riot's developer API does not list a player's owned skins, so there is no neutral public lookup for someone else's collection. The evidence is the client itself. Work through it in this order:

  1. Ask for the Collection tab with Skins filtered to owned items and grouped by tier.
  2. Write down the five skins you care about and find each one by name.
  3. Separate chromas, shards and Classic items from skins.
  4. Mark which of those skins are Legacy and which are reward or event skins.
  5. Check the champions you actually play. A skin for a champion you never use is decoration.
  6. Date the screenshot. Collections change when a shard is redeemed or a skin is gifted.

If you want to see how a ranked reward or Prestige skin sits in a real collection, the League of Legends account category shows named skins on each listing. For server, ranked access and champion pool, read our LoL account guide first.

7. Four mistakes that cost money

Paying for the total

A long list can be made of cheap tiers. Count the skins you would equip, by tier.

Treating Legacy as final

Riot has unvaulted Legacy skins in recent patches. Limited and achievement skins are not planned to return.

Counting shards as skins

A shard in the Loot tab is not owned until it is redeemed.

Reading a reward skin as rank

A Victorious skin shows ranked wins in one season. It does not show a current rank.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mythic a higher tier than Ultimate?

Riot does not publish a single desirability ladder. The two are obtained differently: Ultimate skins are sold for RP, while Mythic skins are usually bought with Mythic Essence or earned as event rewards. Compare the specific skins and how scarce each one is.

Can Legacy skins come back?

Yes. Riot's guide says Legacy skins may return, and recent patches have unvaulted several. It guarantees nothing, and Riot has no plans to bring back Limited and achievement skins.

Does a Victorious skin prove a high rank?

No. Riot ties Victorious skins to 15 ranked wins in a season, while the chromas depend on end of season rank. Check the current rank separately.

Are chromas counted as skins?

They live on their own tab and are not separate skins. There is no official definition of a “skin count”, so ask what a number includes.

Can I look up another player's skins?

Riot's developer API list does not include owned skins. The Collection tab of the account is the evidence, and a screenshot is only as good as its date and context.

Do Exalted skins ever return?

Riot gives no guarantee, but it has already re-run Arcane Fractured Jinx in the Sanctum. Check whether a skin is on an active banner before treating it as gone.
