Assassin's Creed games ranked by Metacritic score
Metacritic shows one headline Metascore per game, taken from its lead platform, and a separate score for each other platform. The table ranks the 15 main games by that headline score. When two games tie, the PC Metascore decides. OpenCritic and Steam figures sit next to each one so you can compare all three at a glance.
| # | Game | Year | Metacritic (lead platform) | Metacritic PC | OpenCritic | Steam all-time peak |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Assassin's Creed II | 2009 | 90 (X360) | 86 | n/a | 3,582 |
| 2 | Brotherhood | 2010 | 89 (X360) | 88 | n/a | 2,198 |
| 3 | IV Black Flag | 2013 | 88 (PS3) | 84 | 85 | 15,996 |
| 4 | Assassin's Creed III | 2012 | 84 (X360) | 80 | n/a | 14,913 |
| 5 | Odyssey | 2018 | 83 (PS4) | 86 | 84 | 61,984 |
| 6 | Black Flag Resynced | 2026 | 83 (PS5) | 84 | 84 | ~105,000 (Ubisoft) |
| 7 | Origins | 2017 | 81 (PS4) | 84 | 85 | 41,541 |
| =8 | Assassin's Creed | 2007 | 81 (X360) | 79 | n/a | 1,266 |
| =8 | Shadows | 2025 | 81 (PS5) | 79 | 81 | 64,627 |
| 10 | Valhalla | 2020 | 80 (PS4) | 82 | 83 | 18,955 |
| 11 | Revelations | 2011 | 80 (X360) | 80 | n/a | 2,727 |
| 12 | Mirage | 2023 | 76 (PS5) | 76 | 76 | 7,837 |
| 13 | Syndicate | 2015 | 76 (PS4) | 74 | 77 | 3,634 |
| 14 | Rogue | 2014 | 72 (PS3) | 74 | 70 | 2,361 |
| 15 | Unity | 2014 | 72 (XOne) | 70 | 71 | 9,232 |
How to read the columns. OpenCritic shows "n/a" where it has no page for the original game; the oldest titles are missing, and the three Ezio games only appear there as The Ezio Collection (74). Steam peaks come from SteamCharts, which logs Valve's own player counts, except Resynced, where we use Ubisoft's figure. The Steam section below explains why the older games look small.
Assassin's Creed and Shadows tie on 81 and on the PC score (79), so they share 8th place. Shadows has the better OpenCritic score (81), but the original game has no OpenCritic page to compare against.
Black Flag Resynced review score
Resynced is Ubisoft Singapore's remake of the 2013 game, and it lands one place below the original on Metacritic. On OpenCritic it has the highest Critics Recommend share of any Assassin's Creed game.
| Measure | Black Flag (2013) | Black Flag Resynced (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic, lead platform | 88 (PS3) | 83 (PS5) |
| Metacritic, PC | 84 | 84 |
| OpenCritic Top Critic Average | 85 | 84 |
| OpenCritic Critics Recommend | 92 % | 93 % |
| OpenCritic critic reviews | 51 | 219 |
| Steam all-time peak | 15,996 | ~105,000 (Ubisoft) |
Ubisoft's launch post of 10 July 2026 says Resynced sold 2 million copies on its first day and peaked at 99,451 concurrent Steam players within 24 hours. In its first-quarter sales release of 23 July 2026, Ubisoft reported 3.5 million copies sold-in within 14 days, a review score of 84 on both OpenCritic and Metacritic at the time, and a Steam peak of "around 105k", which it calls the highest ever for an Assassin's Creed game on Steam.
The scores have moved a little since launch. Ubisoft's launch post quoted 85 on OpenCritic; on 22 October 2026 the page shows 84 from 219 critics, and the PS5 Metascore stands at 83. If you see a different number elsewhere, check the date it was taken.
Best Assassin's Creed game by OpenCritic and Critics Recommend
OpenCritic gives two numbers: the Top Critic Average and the share of critics who recommend the game. The second one separates the games more clearly. These are the ten main games OpenCritic covers, sorted by average, then by recommend share.
| Game | Top Critic Average | Critics Recommend | Critic reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| IV Black Flag | 85 | 92 % | 51 |
| Origins | 85 | 87 % | 179 |
| Black Flag Resynced | 84 | 93 % | 219 |
| Odyssey | 84 | 83 % | 171 |
| Valhalla | 83 | 90 % | 224 |
| Shadows | 81 | 81 % | 231 |
| Syndicate | 77 | 62 % | 106 |
| Mirage | 76 | 72 % | 202 |
| Unity | 71 | 37 % | 92 |
| Rogue | 70 | 31 % | 31 |
Two things stand out. Valhalla sits 10th on Metacritic but has the third-highest recommend share (90 %), so critics who reviewed it mostly liked it, just not by a wide margin. Unity and Rogue are the only games on OpenCritic's list where fewer than half of critics recommend them.

Assassin's Creed Steam peak players, ranked
A Steam peak measures one moment: the most people playing at the same time on Steam. It says nothing about Ubisoft Connect, the Epic Games Store or consoles, where many players buy these games, so treat it as a measure of the Steam audience only.
| Game | Steam all-time peak | On Steam since | Why the number looks the way it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Flag Resynced | ~105,000 | Jul 2026 | Ubisoft's figure; day one on Steam |
| Shadows | 64,627 | Mar 2025 | Day one on Steam |
| Odyssey | 61,984 | Oct 2018 | Day one on Steam |
| Origins | 41,541 | Oct 2017 | Day one on Steam |
| Valhalla | 18,955 | Dec 2022 | Reached Steam two years after launch |
| IV Black Flag | 15,996 | Nov 2013 | PC version three weeks after consoles |
| Assassin's Creed III | 14,913 | Nov 2012 | PC version three weeks after consoles |
| Unity | 9,232 | Nov 2014 | Day one on Steam |
| Mirage | 7,837 | Oct 2024 | Reached Steam a year after launch |
| Syndicate | 3,634 | Nov 2015 | PC version weeks after consoles |
| Assassin's Creed II | 3,582 | Mar 2010 | Launch peak not tracked |
| Revelations | 2,727 | Nov 2011 | Launch peak not tracked |
| Rogue | 2,361 | Mar 2015 | PC version four months after consoles |
| Brotherhood | 2,198 | Mar 2011 | Launch peak not tracked |
| Assassin's Creed | 1,266 | Apr 2008 | Launch peak not tracked |
SteamCharts records start in July 2012, so the launch weeks of the first four games are missing and their peaks only reflect later years. Valhalla and Mirage launched on PC through the Ubisoft Store and the Epic Games Store first, so their Steam peaks miss the launch period. For a fair comparison, look at the games that were on Steam from day one: Resynced, Shadows, Odyssey, Origins and Unity.

Assassin's Creed ranked 2026 by era
Ubisoft's series guide splits the games into the action-adventure era up to Syndicate and the RPGs Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla. We group Mirage, Shadows and Resynced as the newer games. Averaging the headline Metascores per era gives a simple picture of how the series has been received over time.
| Era | Games | Average Metascore | Highest | Lowest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Action-adventure, 2007-2015 | AC, II, Brotherhood, Revelations, III, Black Flag, Rogue, Unity, Syndicate | 81.3 | II (90) | Rogue, Unity (72) |
| RPG trilogy, 2017-2020 | Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla | 81.3 | Odyssey (83) | Valhalla (80) |
| Newer games, 2023-2026 | Mirage, Shadows, Black Flag Resynced | 80.0 | Resynced (83) | Mirage (76) |
The averages are almost flat at about 81 across 19 years. The spread is what changed: the early era holds both the best scores (90, 89, 88) and the worst (72, 72), while the RPG games all landed between 80 and 83.
Ubisoft's own sales statements tell a different story from the scores. Valhalla sold more copies in its first week than any earlier Assassin's Creed game (Ubisoft, 17 November 2020), and by May 2023 Ubisoft said it had 44 % more players than Origins and 19 % more than Odyssey on a comparable basis. Ubisoft says Shadows had the second-highest Day 1 sales revenue in the series, behind Valhalla. Ubisoft does not publish lifetime sales for each game, so there is no complete sales ranking to show.
Which Assassin's Creed to play first, based on the data
There is no single right answer, but the numbers point to a few clear starting points depending on what you want. Each card names the data behind it. Story order is a separate question, covered in our Assassin's Creed games in order guide.
Highest-rated game: Assassin's Creed II
90 on Metacritic, the top score in the series, and the start of the Ezio trilogy with Brotherhood (89) and Revelations (80). It is from 2009, so expect older controls.
Highest-rated on OpenCritic: Black Flag or Resynced
Black Flag has 85 and 92 % recommend; the 2026 remake has 84 and 93 %, the best recommend share in the series. Resynced is the modern version of the same story.
Best-rated RPG: Odyssey or Origins
Odyssey has the highest PC Metascore of the RPG games (86); Origins ties for the best OpenCritic average (85). Both were on Steam from day one and drew 40,000 to 62,000 players at peak.
Newest full game: Shadows
81 on Metacritic and OpenCritic, with a Steam peak of 64,627, the highest of any original (non-remake) Assassin's Creed game on Steam.
If you want one game that scores well everywhere, Black Flag Resynced is the only entry in the top six on Metacritic, the top three on OpenCritic and first on Steam peak at once. If you would rather play the highest-rated game regardless of age, it is Assassin's Creed II.
What the ranking means for a Ubisoft PC library
Every game in the table is on PC. Ubisoft ties copies bought on Steam or the Epic Games Store to a Ubisoft account once you link the two accounts, which is why a Ubisoft account's library is the place to check which of the ranked games you already have.
- Remasters are separate products. Assassin's Creed III Remastered (72 on PS4, 75 on PC) and Rogue Remastered (71, consoles only) are listed apart from the originals and are not ranked above.
- Black Flag and Resynced are two games. Ubisoft sells the remake as its own product, so owning the 2013 game does not give you Resynced.
- Liberation stays out of the main ranking. The 2012 PS Vita game has 70 on Metacritic; its HD version is on Steam.
How Ubisoft links its account to Steam, the Epic Games Store and consoles is explained in our Ubisoft account linking guide, and what Full Access means on a game account is in the NFA vs Full Access explainer.
