Looking for a Counter-Strike 2 account?

Compare profile rank, Premier rating, medals and Steam level on every listing. This guide explains the ban side.

1. What a VAC ban is

Valve's VAC ban support article says VAC bans are applied when an account, or an account using the phone number tied to other accounts, connects to a VAC-secured server while running cheat software. Valve Anti-Cheat regularly checks the game files of users connected to Valve's servers to make sure third-party software that gives players an advantage is not in use, and if it is detected a VAC ban is issued.

Steam lists Counter-Strike 2 as a game that uses Valve Anti-Cheat, but Valve's ban article does not name CS2, so read it as the general rule. Valve does not tell you which cheat triggered a ban, because it says releasing that information would only benefit cheat developers.

2. How to check VAC status

Open Steam

Launch the Steam client on the account you want to check.

Go to Settings

Choose Steam, then Settings.

Open the Account tab

Select “Click here for details” under VAC Status.

Valve says this page shows which games your VAC ban affects. Because the status sits inside the account, a screenshot of that page is a fact about that account on that day, and it needs the date and the account name next to it.

3. What a VAC ban blocks and allows

Effects of a VAC ban according to Valve
AreaWhat Valve says
Single-player games, LAN, non-secured serversStill allowed. Valve describes how to find servers that are not VAC-secured with the Not secure filter.
Moving items and gamesNot possible. Items and games cannot be moved to a different account.
Receiving itemsAllowed. The account can still receive items, but not send them. New games can still be bought and registered.
GiftingThe game you were VAC banned in cannot be sent as a gift.
Game hub uploadsNot allowed for the game you were banned from.
Workshop votingNot allowed in the game you were banned from, and VAC bans also prevent voting in free-to-play games and their communities.

Ask for the VAC status

Steam Support does not remove VAC bans. Compare what a listing says about bans with the checks described in this guide.

4. Why a VAC ban cannot be appealed

Common questions about removing a VAC ban
QuestionValve's answer
Can I appeal? No. VAC bans cannot be appealed. A ban issued incorrectly is removed automatically after investigation, but Support does not remove bans manually for any reason.
I was not using my account. Can it be removed? No. Any bans on an account remain regardless of who was using it. Valve says the use and security of your account are your responsibility.
The software I was using was a cheat, but not for a VAC-secured game. Can I disable the software and remove the ban?No. Valve says VAC bans are only issued when software provides an advantage on VAC-secured servers.
Which program caused my ban?Valve does not disclose it.

What this means for an account. A VAC ban is part of the account's history. Valve states that it remains regardless of who was using the account at the time.

5. Phone numbers and other accounts

Valve says VAC bans are applied to all accounts sharing a phone number at the time of the infraction. Accounts sharing the number that do not own the game the ban is for still receive the ban and cannot buy the game afterwards. Valve notes this feature is not enabled for all games and is used at the developer's discretion, and recommends against sharing your phone number or using someone else's on your Steam account.

Phone numbers that were on an account when it was banned can be used on new accounts immediately.

6. Which games share a ban

Valve names two groups where cheating in one game results in a ban for all games in the group. The Source group is Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Day of Defeat: Source and Team Fortress 2. The GoldSource group is Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Ricochet, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, Half-Life: Deathmatch and Deathmatch Classic.

The article does not list Counter-Strike 2 in either group and does not say how CS2 is linked to them. The only way to see which games a ban affects is the VAC Status page in Steam. Our service medals guide and Prime and Premier guide cover the other account facts.

7. Five questions before you buy

  1. Does the VAC Status page for this account show no ban, and when was it checked?
  2. Does the listing mention any other ban or restriction, and how is it documented?
  3. Is the Steam account name shown next to the status so the screenshot can be matched?
  4. Has the phone number on the account ever been shared with another account?
  5. Is the rest of the listing, such as Prime, medals and rating, described as separate facts?

8. Four mistakes people make

Expecting an appeal

Valve says VAC bans cannot be appealed.

Relying on a line of text

A listing that says “no bans” is not the VAC Status page. Ask for the page.

Sharing a phone number

Valve applies bans to every account sharing the number at the time, in games where the feature is enabled.

Mixing bans with ratings

A Premier rating is a separate fact and says nothing about ban status.
