CS2 Weekly Care Package and Armory Explained: How Skins Are Earned

Not every CS2 skin was bought or traded. Learn how the weekly care package and the Armory give items through play (the Armory with a purchased pass), why Prime Status matters, how the drop lists and Armory stock rotate, and how to read an inventory on an account listing.

Compare profile rank, Premier rating, medals and Steam level on every listing. This guide explains how items are earned.

1. The weekly care package

Valve's release notes for 27 September 2023, the CS2 launch update, say weekly drops were replaced with a weekly care package where you choose from weapon cases, weapon finishes and graffiti. Valve's Prime Status FAQ adds the condition: in order to receive weekly care packages you must have Prime Status.

The FAQ lists what Prime gives in the same place. Players with Prime Status earn XP, receive Competitive Skill Groups and Counter-Strike Ratings, are eligible for weekly care packages and are matchmade with other Prime players (a lobby that includes a non-Prime player counts as non-Prime). Without Prime there is no XP, no rating and no care package.

2. Drop lists change

The collections you can get from a care package are not fixed. Valve edits the drop list in its update notes. The recent changes it published are below.

Weekly care package drop list changes Valve has published
DateAddedRemoved
31 March 2025Ascent, Boreal, RadiantBank, Italy, Lake, original Train
21 January 2026Harlequin, AchromaSafehouse, Dust 2, 2018 Nuke, 2018 Inferno

These come from the update notes for 31 March 2025 and 21 January 2026. Valve has also made some terminals available as a possible weekly drop, such as the Genesis Uplink Terminal in its Show Off post and the Dead Hand Terminal in The Dead Hand, which you can use to buy items from those collections.

3. The Armory

Valve introduced the Armory in its release notes for 2 October 2024. You purchase and activate an Armory Pass, you make progress toward credits whenever you earn XP with an active pass, and you redeem credits for items in the Armory. A November 2024 update changed activation so that it no longer grants the first credit immediately, and Valve said all 40 credits can be earned by playing and earning XP.

Armory stock rotates too. The Season 5 post lists new weapon collections Arabesque and Spy Tech and new sticker collections Fruits & Vegetables and Auto Racing, and the matching update notes say that Train 2025 and Sport & Field weapon collections and the Sugarface 2 and Elemental Craft sticker collections are no longer available in the Armory.

Valve's wording is dated. The Armory rules above come from release notes between 2024 and 2026. Check the in-game Armory screen for the current price and credit terms, which we do not quote.

Compare more than the item count

Drops depend on Prime and play time. Compare Prime, medals and rating on a listing with what this guide explains.

4. Restrictions on earned items

What limits earned items
RuleWhat Valve says
Re-trade and re-marketValve's 2 October 2024 notes put a 7-day re-trade and re-market restriction on items acquired from the in-game store, including the Armory, from trade offers and from the Community Market. Valve's Trade Protected Items FAQ does not mention this rule, and Valve's pages do not say whether it still applies alongside Trade Protection.
Trade ProtectionItems received in a trade are Trade Protected for 7 days under the newer system. Read our Trade Protection guide.
Full inventoryThe June 2026 notes add an error message when your inventory is full and you try to redeem weekly care package rewards, Armory items or items in the Major Shop cart.
PrimeRequired for the weekly care package, according to the Prime FAQ.

Our Trade Protection guide explains the 7-day rule for traded items.

5. Reading an inventory on a listing

What an item list does and does not show
DetailWhat it showsWhat it does not show
Item names and exteriorsWhat the account owns on the day of the screenshot. How each item was acquired: drop, Armory, Market or trade.
Prime StatusThat the account qualifies for XP, ratings and the weekly care package. That the care package was claimed, or any rating.
Recent itemsThat something was added lately.Whether it is in a re-trade window. A Steam inventory screenshot shows the Trade Protected shield.
Armory itemsThat the item is on the account.Who redeemed it, or that it is still in the Armory today.

6. Five questions before you buy

  1. Does the account have Prime Status, and does the listing say so?
  2. How many of the items were added in the last 7 days?
  3. Is the inventory screenshot dated and matched to the account name?
  4. Are the rating, medals and inventory described as separate facts?
  5. Is anything on the account described that the listing cannot show?

7. Four mistakes people make

Valuing an item list alone

It does not show how the items were acquired or when.

Assuming everyone gets drops

Valve says weekly care packages need Prime Status.

Treating Armory stock as permanent

Valve removes collections from the Armory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CS2 weekly care package?

A weekly reward that replaced weekly drops in September 2023. Valve's notes say you choose from weapon cases, weapon finishes and graffiti.

Do I need Prime to get the weekly care package?

Yes. Valve's Prime FAQ says you must have Prime Status to receive weekly care packages.

What is the CS2 Armory?

A store introduced in October 2024 where you redeem Armory credits, earned with an active Armory Pass through XP, for weapon collections, charms, stickers and other items.

How many Armory credits can you earn?

Valve said in November 2024 that all 40 credits of an Armory Pass can be earned by playing and earning XP. Check the in-game Armory for current terms.

Do care package and Armory collections change?

Yes. Valve adds and removes collections from the weekly care package drop list and from the Armory in its update notes.
