Fortnite Winterfest skins and events by year

Fortnite's December event started as 14 Days of Fortnite in 2018, became Winterfest in 2019, ran as Operation Snowdown in 2020 and has been Winterfest every year since. The dates below come from Epic Games' own post for each year, in US Eastern time. In 2017 there was no Battle Royale event; the Christmas skins were sold in the Item Shop only.

The format barely changes: a lodge or cabin opens in the lobby, one present unlocks per day (14 in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025), and the presents stay claimable until the event ends. Operation Snowdown in 2020 used quests instead. Since 2020 the free outfits are named in Epic Games' post; in 2019 the post only said the presents held two outfits, which the game files identify as Lt. Evergreen and Wooly Warrior.

All free Winterfest skins and whether they came back

This is the list most people search for in December. The last column counts the days each outfit was listed in the Item Shop, from the shop history in the game data mirrored by fortnite-api.com. A zero means it was never sold as a shop item.

For Snowmando and Frost Squad the data holds one entry dated 6 December 2023. The same date appears on 144 items at once, the day Chapter 5 replaced the shop, so we do not count it as a return.

Fortnite Christmas skins in the Item Shop by year

Next to the free outfits, every December brings paid holiday skins. The list below covers the holiday-themed outfits that first appeared in the Item Shop each December (or the first days of January), checked against their first shop date in the game data. For 2021 and later we also include the December collabs Epic Games named in its Winterfest post.

Winterfest 2022 had Snowdancer and Cozy Knit Jonesy as its shop headliners, 2023 the TMNT set, 2024 Mariah Carey, Santa Shaq and Guffmas Tree, and 2025 Sabrina Carpenter's Santa 'Brina, Snow Miku and the Hogwarts house outfits. For the full licence history, see all Fortnite collab skins.

Rarest Fortnite Christmas skins

Most holiday skins return every December. A few did not, and one has not been sold since January 2018. Codename E.L.F. from the first Christmas shop has 11 shop days on record and was last listed on 31 January 2018, which makes it the hardest Christmas skin to find on an account today.

Sgt. Winter is the other old one people ask about. It was a Season 7 Battle Pass outfit in December 2018 and has no shop listing, like every Battle Pass outfit before Chapter 5 Season 4. Our Battle Pass skins list has the rest of that pass, and the rare Fortnite skins guide ranks the rarest skins overall.

Winterfest 2026: what is known

As of 23 October 2026 Epic Games has not posted anything about Winterfest 2026. What the past events show is a pattern, not a promise:

• Start dates: 13 Dec (2022), 14 Dec (2023), 16 Dec (2021), 18 Dec (2019, 2020, 2025) and 20 Dec (2024, per Epic Games' post).
• End dates: always between 2 and 7 January.
• Free outfits: two per year since 2019, three in 2021 and 2022.
• Season: Winterfest has run in the first season of a new chapter every year since 2021. Epic Games has not announced Chapter 8 or its date.

Fortnitemares 2026 ends on 1 November, so the next seasonal event after it will be Winterfest. Our Fortnitemares skins by year list covers the October event, and every Fortnite season in order shows where each Winterfest fell.

What Winterfest skins say about an account

Because the free outfits were login rewards, they date an account. Lt. Evergreen means the account was played between 18 December 2019 and 7 January 2020; Polar Peely means December 2021 or early January 2022. That is why buyers of older accounts look for them in the locker, next to Battle Pass and Crew skins.

If you plan to collect them yourself, the free ones only need you to log in during the event and open the presents before it ends. For checking what an account really owns before buying, see the Fortnite account value guide.
