How many Fortnite seasons there are

Counting every Battle Royale season Epic Games has launched, there are 42 as of 23 October 2026. The number is easy to check: the game files tag every cosmetic with the season it was introduced in, numbered 1 to 42 (mirrored by fortnite-api.com), and from Season 3 on, the main update of each season carries the same number: v3.0 for Season 3, v39.00 for Chapter 7 Season 1, v42 for Chapter 7 Season 4. Season 2 was the exception and launched with v1.11.

Since Chapter 3 every chapter has lasted almost exactly a year, starting in the first days of December. The first two chapters ran about two years each. The "Ran until" date in the tables below is the day the next season started, since one season ends when the next one launches.

Fortnite Chapter 1 seasons in order (2017 to 2019)

Battle Royale went free for everyone on 26 September 2017. The update 1.8 notes on 25 October 2017 then added season levels, so Season 1 counts from launch. The Battle Pass arrived with Season 2 on 14 December 2017.

Chapter 2 went live on 15 October 2019 with a new map. "Cosmetics" counts the items the game files tag with that season, including emotes, sprays and wraps.

Fortnite Chapter 2 seasons in order (2019 to 2021)

Chapter 2 brought a new map and the two longest seasons in the game's history. Season 1 was extended into February 2020 and Season 2 past its 30 April end, so they ran 128 and 118 days.

Fortnite Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 seasons in order

From Chapter 3 on, almost every launch post names the season; Chapter 4 Season 1 is the exception. Chapter 4 ended with Fortnite OG, a one-month season that brought back the Chapter 1 map.

Fortnite Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 seasons in order

Chapters 5 and 6 added three more mini-seasons: Chapter 2 Remix at the end of 2024, the Star Wars season Galactic Battle in May 2025 and the Simpsons season in November 2025. The game files number them like normal seasons, which is why Chapter 6 Season 4 is season 37, not 36.

For mini-seasons and a few launches the date is the day of Epic Games' "Fortnite Ecosystem" update post, which appeared on launch day; the Battle Royale story post sometimes went up a day earlier. The full outfit lists for these passes are in our Battle Pass skins by season list.

Fortnite Chapter 7 seasons and the current season

Chapter 7 started on 29 November 2025 with update v39.00. Season 4: Override is the current season; Epic Games' Battle Pass page gives 1 November 2026 (Eastern Time) as its end, which is also the last day of Fortnitemares 2026.

What comes after Override is not official. Epic Games has published no post about Chapter 8 or a November 2026 season as of 23 October 2026; dates that circulate come from leaks, so we do not list one. The next fixed date on the calendar is Winterfest, which has run in the first season of every new chapter since 2021 (see Winterfest skins by year).

Fortnite OG seasons in order

Fortnite OG is a separate, permanent mode that Epic Games launched on 6 December 2024. It replays Chapter 1 season by season on shorter timers. These are the OG seasons Epic Games announced with a news post:

What a season tells you about an account

Every item carries its introduction season in the game files, so the season of the oldest item in a locker dates the account. That is why sellers and buyers talk about "Season 1" or "Season 2" accounts.
