1. Classic, Grand and Mega Draft Challenges

Supercell's Classic Challenges page calls these the original challenges of Clash Royale, ever-present at the bottom of the Events tab. On Supercell's page “Classic Challenges” is the name for all three types: Classic, Grand and Mega Draft. Each victory increases the value of the final reward.

The three always-available challenges
ChallengeEntry costTop prize
Classic Challenge10 Gems2,000 Gold and 100 cards
Grand Challenge100 Gems22,000 Gold and 550 cards
Mega Draft Challenge50 Gems11,000 Gold and 1,100 cards

They end when you reach 12 wins or take 3 losses, and they unlock at Arena 3. Classic and Grand Challenges have no time limit, so you can start a battle whenever you want or play other modes in the meantime. Supercell does not mention a time limit for Mega Draft.

2. Why levels do not matter in Classic Challenges

In Classic Challenges all cards and towers are powered to Level 11 to ensure an even playing field. Matchmaking is based on your number of wins. Supercell says you can build a deck using any card in the game, Champions included. It does not say how that applies to the Mega Draft format.

What that means. In Classic Challenges Supercell caps the levels and lets you use any card, so a deep run shows skill with a deck and says nothing about the collection behind the account.

3. Special Challenges

Supercell's Challenges page describes Special Challenges as part of the time-limited events, shown just below the main event. They can feature modes such as Elixir Capture or Double or Triple Elixir, some have themes such as Valentine's Day or New Year, and they do not last long. Rewards depend on the challenge, and matchmaking is based on your performance in it. You need Arena 3 to join.

Retries and continues
OptionWhat Supercell says
RetryIn certain challenges you can pay some Gems to re-enter and try again from the beginning.
ContinueIn other challenges you can pay Gems to reset your losses and continue playing, as many times as you like at the same Gem price.
Pass RoyaleLets you retry or continue as many times as you want until you finish. This does not include Classic, Grand or Mega Draft Challenges. Supercell's Pass Royale page limits the perk to win-based challenges.

The Pass Royale rules are in the Pass Royale support page and our Pass Royale guide.

Level 11 events do not test your cards

Results from Classic Challenges and Global Tournaments come from capped levels. Compare the cards and levels a listing shows instead.

4. Global Tournaments

Supercell's Global Tournaments page says tournaments run from time to time and are reached through the Game Mode Switcher. The winner is decided by wins with Crowns as tiebreakers, and you keep playing until five losses or until the timer ends. All cards and towers are capped at level 11.

6. Five questions before you buy

  1. Which King Tower Level and card levels does the listing show?
  2. Is a badge or event result described with its date and event?
  3. Which Evolutions, Heroes and Champions are unlocked?
  4. Is any Gem balance claimed as value, and is it shown inside the game?
  5. Are event results listed separately from the collection?

7. Four mistakes people make

Reading wins as card strength

Classic Challenges and Global Tournaments cap levels at 11.

Expecting free retries everywhere

Pass Royale retries exclude Classic, Grand and Mega Draft.

Forgetting the entry cost

Classic costs 10 Gems, Mega Draft 50 and Grand 100.

Treating a badge as current rank

A Champion Badge shows at least one top-1,000 finish. Its level rises with tournaments played, so it does not show when.
