Compare King Level, Evolutions and Champions on every listing. This guide explains what happens to extra cards and shards.
1. Three things that can happen to an excess
Supercell's conversions page explains that most resources and items have a limit, and that excess is handled in one of three ways: it is lost, it converts into another resource, or it overflows into the inventory. Some limits are inventory limits and some are absolute maximums.
| Type | What happens | Supercell's example |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory limit | The whole batch you collect is received and the excess overflows. | 95 items with a limit of 100, plus 10 more, gives 105/100. |
| Absolute maximum | The cap cannot be exceeded and the excess is lost. | 95 items with an absolute maximum of 100, plus 10 more, gives 100. |
2. Maxed cards become Crystals
Cards have no inventory limit. All copies are stored until the card reaches level 16, and once it has, extra copies convert to Crystals. Supercell's Crystals page says you spend Crystals in the Shop on cosmetic rewards, and that you can only hold a limited number at a time, which you can check in the Magic Items tab of your Collection.
| Rarity | Crystals |
|---|---|
| Common | 1 |
| Rare | 6 |
| Epic | 60 |
| Legendary | 600 |
| Champion | 1,200 |
Read stockpiles with the limits in mind
A big balance can hide a cap. Compare the cards, Evolutions and Heroes a listing shows with the rules in this guide.
4. Wild Cards
Wild Cards upgrade cards of the same rarity, and Supercell says you cannot use them to unlock new cards. Their limit depends on rarity and King Tower Level, and Wild Cards from in-app purchases can overflow. What happens to an extra Wild Card depends on the situation.
| Scenario | Conversion |
|---|---|
| No cards of that rarity are available to unlock at the current Arena | Extras convert to Gold: 500 for Epic, 20,000 for Legendary and 20,000 for Champion. |
| All cards of that rarity are level 16 | Extras can be converted manually to Crystals at the same rates as maxed cards. Open the Collection tab and tap the Wild Card icon. |
| All other scenarios | Extras convert into a random card of the same rarity. |
5. Heroes, Hero Coins, potions and other limits
| Item | Limit | Excess |
|---|---|---|
| Hero Coins | 200 inventory limit | Convert to 1 Gem each. They can overflow if you have fewer than 200 when you receive them. |
| Card Boost Potions | 8 | Potions from in-app purchases overflow, and extras convert to 500 Gold. |
| Trade Tokens | 10 of each rarity | Tokens from in-app purchases and cancelled trade requests can overflow. Other extra tokens convert to Gold: 250 Common, 500 Rare, 1,000 Epic, 2,000 Legendary. |
| Gold | 5M absolute maximum | Lost, whatever the source. |
| Star Points | 5M absolute maximum | Lost. |
| Gems | No limit | Not applicable. |
If you receive a duplicate of a Hero you already unlocked, for example through an event, Supercell says you earn copies of that card and 20 Hero Coins instead. All cosmetic items, including emotes, banners and Tower Skins, are unique, so you cannot receive extra copies or convert them.
6. What a stockpile on a listing means
| Detail | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Large Gold or Star Points | A balance on the day of the screenshot. | How much income was lost above the 5M cap. |
| Crystals | That cards were maxed or Wild Cards were converted. | Which cosmetics were bought with them. |
| Spare Evolution Shards | Progress on a card's Evolution, up to five shards. | That the Evolution is unlocked, which happens at six. |
| Hero Coins | Progress from duplicates or the pass. | That a Hero is unlocked. |
What counts is what is unlocked and at what level. See our card types guide for Evolutions and Heroes.
7. Five questions before you buy
- Which cards are level 16, and how many are below it?
- Which Evolutions are unlocked, and which are only shards?
- Which Heroes are unlocked?
- Is any resource sitting at a cap, such as 5M Gold, so that new income would be lost?
- Are Crystals, Gems and Wild Cards listed separately from the cards?
8. Four mistakes people make
Counting Evolution Shards as an Evolution
The Evolution unlocks at six shards, not before.
Forgetting the 5M cap
Gold and Star Points above 5M are lost.
Valuing Crystals as cards
Supercell says Crystals buy cosmetic rewards in the Shop.
Reading old guides
Supercell's 10 November 2025 post announced the removal of Elite Wild Cards, so older upgrade guides no longer apply.
