CS2 wear ranges: the five float values for each condition

Every painted weapon, knife and pair of gloves in CS2 has a float value, a decimal number between 0 and 1 that the game rolls once when the item is created. It never changes afterwards: using the skin does not wear it down. The float decides which of the five exterior names the item carries. The names come straight from Valve's English localisation file (SFUI_InvTooltip_Wear_Amount_0 to _4); the borders below are the ranges every pattern database and the Steam Community Market's "Exterior" filter use.

CS2 wear conditions and their float ranges
ExteriorFloat fromFloat to (below)Share of the 0 to 1 scale
Factory New (FN)0.000.077 %
Minimal Wear (MW)0.070.158 %
Field-Tested (FT)0.150.3823 %
Well-Worn (WW)0.380.457 %
Battle-Scarred (BS)0.451.0055 %

The share column is only true for a finish whose float range is the full 0.00 to 1.00. Most finishes have a narrower range (see the next section), and the float is spread evenly across that narrower range, not across the whole scale. A float of exactly 0.07 is already Minimal Wear; a float of 0.0699 is still Factory New. That is why listings with floats just under a border, such as 0.149 or 0.379, are sought after: they carry the better name while looking almost the same as the next condition down.

Highest float1.00

Stock weapons, vanilla knives (a knife with no finish) and items such as agents, stickers and music kits have no float on the weapon itself; the game shows them as "Not Painted". Stickers have their own scrape level, which Valve gave a selector on 2 October 2024 and which is separate from the weapon's float.

CS2 min and max float: why some skins skip a wear

Each finish (Valve calls it a paint kit) has two numbers in Valve's game file items_game.txt: wear_remap_min and wear_remap_max. A new item's float is always rolled between those two values. A paint kit that does not set them inherits the default kit's values, 0.06 to 0.80. Of the 1,481 paint kits we counted in the file, 359 use the full 0.00 to 1.00 range, 190 use the 0.06 to 0.80 default, and the rest have custom caps.

Two things follow from the caps. First, a cap can delete a condition: no AWP | Asiimov is Factory New or Minimal Wear, and no Doppler knife is Field-Tested. Second, a cap changes how rare a condition is. A Fire Serpent that starts at 0.06 has only 0.01 of its 0.70-wide range inside Factory New, so about 1.4 % of new Fire Serpents roll Factory New, against 7 % for a finish with a full range. The Slaughter, Fade and Doppler caps are why almost every knife in those finishes reads "Factory New".

The same finish name can carry different caps on different weapons. Asiimov is 0.18 to 1.00 on the AWP and M4A4 but 0.05 to 0.70 on the AK-47 and 0.10 to 1.00 on the P250. Always check the cap for the exact weapon and finish.

How to check float in CS2

You can read the exact float without any outside tool. Valve's localisation file names the two fields in the item info panel "Wear Rating" (the float) and "Pattern Template" (the pattern index), and the 25 April 2024 update added the wear category to the info tooltip on the inspect screen.

  1. Open the CS2 inventory and right-click (or click) the skin.
  2. Choose Inspect. The item opens in the 3D inspect view.
  3. Hover over or open the info icon on the inspect screen. It lists the exterior, the Wear Rating with its full decimal value, and the Pattern Template number.
  4. For a skin on the Steam Community Market or in another player's inventory, use the "Inspect in Game" button on the listing; it opens the same inspect view with the same fields.

The Steam web inventory and the Market listing page only show the exterior name, not the exact float. Browser extensions and float-checker sites read the inspect link to show the number on the web page, but the value they show is the same one the game shows. The 1 October 2025 update also made the in-game loadout of a spectated player show the wear and pattern of their gloves.

CS2 pattern index: what the pattern template does

Next to the float, every painted item has a pattern index, shown as "Pattern Template" in game and often called the paint seed. It decides where the texture sits on the model: how far a Fade runs, which part of a Case Hardened is blue, where the marks on a Crimson Web land. Pattern databases list the seed as a whole number from 0 to 999; a few sites write 0 to 1000, and Valve does not publish the range itself.

Float

How worn the paint looks. Rolled within the finish's min and max. Sets the exterior name.

Pattern index

Where the texture is placed. Same range for every finish. Sets the look, not the name.

Where it matters

Case Hardened, Fade, Crimson Web, Marble Fade, Doppler and other finishes where placement changes the colours you see.

Where it barely matters

Solid or evenly patterned finishes, where two seeds look almost the same.

Pattern and float are independent: a skin can have a top pattern and a high float, or the reverse. Valve's own posts confirm that both vary per item; the Fourth Season post of 21 January 2026 says the AK-47 | Aphrodite in the Armory "varies in both wear and pattern".

StatTrak and Souvenir skins explained

StatTrak and Souvenir are qualities, not rarities. They sit on top of the grade and the float, and an item can never be both.

Valve's Arms Deal notes of 14 August 2013 say the new cases "have a chance to contain new knives and StatTrak weapons". For the IEM Cologne 2026 Major, Valve added a way to craft your own Souvenir: you pick a normal or Souvenir weapon, a completed match and a player, and the weapon comes back in Souvenir quality with gold team, autograph and map stickers. Existing stickers on that weapon are removed first.

CS2 rarity order: every grade from Consumer to Covert

Valve's game file defines eight rarity levels. The weapon names below are the Rarity_*_Weapon strings in Valve's English localisation, and the colours are the hex values the game file assigns to each level. Agents, stickers and gloves use different names for the same levels.

CS2 rarity grades in order, lowest to highest
LevelWeapon gradeColourSticker or glove nameWhere it drops

6CovertRed, #EB4B4BExtraordinary (gloves)Cases, collections; knives and gloves sit here as the ★ rare special item
7ContrabandGold-orange, #E4AE39ContrabandNo longer drops

Knives and gloves are not a separate grade in the file. They use the Covert level (gloves are shown as "Extraordinary") (the knife prefab is set to "ancient", Valve's internal name for Covert) together with the "unusual" craft class, which gives them the ★ in front of the name; the game file colours Unusual #FFD700. The only weapon finish with Contraband rarity in the game file is the M4A4 | Howl, which was pulled from the Huntsman Weapon Case and cannot drop any more; the only other Contraband item is the Howling Dawn sticker. A case contains Mil-Spec to Covert skins plus its rare special item. Consumer and Industrial skins come from collections, such as map collections and souvenir packages, not from cases. Our CS2 knife types guide lists which knife pool each case uses.

The game file also gives the first four levels a drop weight: 10,000,000 for Consumer, 2,000,000 for Industrial, 400,000 for Mil-Spec and 80,000 for Restricted. Each step is one fifth of the one below it, the same 1 to 5 rule the China odds disclosure states.

CS2 case odds: the drop rates Valve's China publisher discloses

Valve does not print case odds on Steam. Chinese rules require loot box odds to be published, so Perfect World, which runs CS2 in China, keeps an odds disclosure page that was first posted on 11 September 2017 and has since been extended with the Armory pass and both terminals. It states the rules in ratios: from Covert down, each grade is one fifth as likely as the grade below it; a knife or gloves is 2 to 5 against a Covert; items of the same grade are equally likely; and where StatTrak is possible, the chance of StatTrak is 1 in 10. The page then gives the percentages below.

CS2 case drop rates per grade, as published on csgo.com.cn
GradeChance per caseAbout 1 inStatTrak version
Mil-Spec (blue)79.923 %1.257.992 %
Restricted (purple)15.985 %6.31.599 %

Covert (red)0.639 %1560.064 %
Knife or gloves (rare special item)0.256 %3910.026 % (knives only)

The page puts every key-opened weapon case and the Dead Hand Terminal in this first category. It lists other containers separately. The Genesis Terminal, which has no rare special item, pays out 80.128 % Mil-Spec, 16.026 % Restricted, 3.205 % Classified and 0.641 % Covert. Armory weapon collections that run from Industrial to Covert are 80.026 %, 16.005 %, 3.201 %, 0.640 % and 0.128 %. The biggest souvenir packages, with all six grades from Consumer to Covert, give a Covert only 0.027 % of the time. The StatTrak column is our arithmetic (one tenth of each grade); gloves cannot be StatTrak.

Inside a grade, every item is equally likely. A case with two Covert skins gives each about 0.32 %. A knife case splits the 0.256 % evenly across every knife and finish combination in its pool, which is why a single Karambit finish from one case is far rarer than "a knife".

Each case is an independent roll, so no number of openings guarantees a knife; on average it takes about 391 cases. Our CS2 cases list has every case and terminal with its release date, and the weekly care package guide explains how free drops work.

Trade up float formula: how float carries over in CS2

A Trade Up Contract takes ten items of the same grade and returns one item of the next grade up, from the collection of one of the items you put in. The idea started as the Arms Deal Contract in Valve's notes of 12 September 2013, which also say "Knives are not part of collections." The rules today:

  • Ten inputs of the same grade, Consumer up to Classified, give one item of the next grade.
  • Five Covert inputs give a knife or gloves since the 22 October 2025 update: five StatTrak Covert items give a StatTrak knife, five normal Covert items give a normal knife or normal gloves, each "from a collection of one of the items provided".
  • StatTrak inputs cannot be mixed with normal ones, and the result keeps StatTrak.
  • Souvenirs can be mixed with normal items since the 21 May 2026 update; the souvenir attributes are removed and the result is a normal item.

Valve has never published how the output float is calculated. The formula players use comes from their own measurements, as described by trade-up guides such as SkinsMonkey's. Since the October 2025 update it works in three steps:

  1. Adjust each input to its own range: adjusted float = (input float − input min) ÷ (input max − input min).
  2. Average the adjusted floats of all inputs.
  3. Map the average onto the output's range: output float = output min + average × (output max − output min).

Before that update the game skipped step 1 and averaged the raw floats, the formula you still see in older guides: output = average float × (output max − output min) + output min. For inputs with a full 0.00 to 1.00 range both methods give the same result. They differ when an input is capped: an input at 0.15 with a range of 0.00 to 0.50 now counts as 0.30, not 0.15, because it sits 30 % of the way through its own range.

Average adjusted input float needed for each output wear
Output range (example)Factory New if belowMinimal Wear if belowField-Tested if below
0.00 to 1.000.07000.15000.3800
0.06 to 0.80 (Fire Serpent-style, gloves)0.01350.12160.4324
0.10 to 0.70 (AK-47 | Redline)not possible0.08330.4667
0.18 to 1.00 (AWP | Asiimov)not possiblenot possible0.2439
0.00 to 0.08 (knife Doppler, Fade)0.8750always at most MWnot possible

Each threshold is (wear border − output min) ÷ (output max − output min). Worked example: ten inputs that each sit at an adjusted 0.10 give an average of 0.10. If the result is an AK-47 | Redline, the float is 0.10 + 0.10 × 0.60 = 0.16, Field-Tested. If the same contract lands on a finish with a 0.00 to 0.50 range, it gives 0.05, Factory New. The contract uses one average for every possible outcome, so a single set of inputs can produce different conditions depending on which skin it rolls.

Which collection you get is also not published by Valve. Player tests show each input gives its collection an equal share: 10 % per input in a ten-item contract, 20 % per input in a five-Covert contract. Inside the chosen collection, each next-grade item is equally likely.

Knife trade ups: what float your knife or gloves get

The same three steps decide the wear of a knife or gloves from a five-Covert contract. Two details matter more here than in normal contracts.

  • Knife finish caps are narrow. Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth and Fade knives run 0.00 to 0.08, so almost any set of inputs gives a Factory New result if the roll lands on one of them. Original finishes such as Crimson Web (0.06 to 0.80) or Case Hardened (0.00 to 1.00) follow the inputs much more closely.
  • Gloves have a floor of 0.06. Most glove finishes inherit the default 0.06 to 0.80 range, so a Factory New pair needs an average adjusted input float below about 0.0135.
  • The pool is the case's pool. The result comes "from a collection of one of the items provided". Our knife types guide shows which knives each case shares, and the operations list covers the operation cases among them.
  • StatTrak gloves do not exist, so five StatTrak Covert items can only give a StatTrak knife.

Items received in a trade or bought on the Market carry Valve's re-trade restriction before they can be used again; the trade protection guide explains the current rules.

Frequently asked questions

What are the float values for each wear in CS2?

Factory New 0.00 to 0.07, Minimal Wear 0.07 to 0.15, Field-Tested 0.15 to 0.38, Well-Worn 0.38 to 0.45 and Battle-Scarred 0.45 to 1.00. A float exactly on a border belongs to the worse condition.

What is the rarity order in CS2?

Consumer Grade, Industrial Grade, Mil-Spec, Restricted, Classified, Covert, then Contraband. Knives and gloves are the rare special item at the Covert level, marked with a ★.

What are the odds of getting a knife from a CS2 case?

0.256 % per case, about 1 in 391, according to the odds Valve's China publisher Perfect World discloses. A StatTrak knife is one tenth of that, about 0.026 %.

How do I see the exact float of my skin in CS2?

Inspect the skin in your inventory and open the info panel. It shows the Wear Rating, which is the exact float, and the Pattern Template.

Why is there no Factory New AWP Asiimov?

Its float range in Valve's game file is 0.18 to 1.00. Anything below 0.18 cannot exist, so Factory New and Minimal Wear are impossible.

How is the float of a trade up calculated?

Each input is first scaled to its own range, the scaled values are averaged, and the average is mapped onto the output's range: output = min + average × (max − min). Valve has not published this; players measured it after the October 2025 update.

Can you trade up Covert skins into a knife?

Yes, since 22 October 2025. Five Covert skins give a knife or gloves from the collection of one of the inputs; five StatTrak Coverts give a StatTrak knife.

Does a skin's float go up when you use it?

No. The float is fixed when the item is created and never changes, no matter how many rounds you play with it.
